WARWICKSHIRE MEANS BUSINESS

Welcome from Mark Ryder, head of transport and economy at Warwickshire County Council

Hello and welcome to the June edition of Warwickshire Means Business.

In this edition we feature our region's place in the vanguard of new vehicle technology. Coventry & Warwickshire has a wonderful history of car-making but also a very exciting future. Our region has long been widely renowned as a home for innovation, where good ideas are forged, encouraged and backed, and that remains very much the case as Steph Williams, a member of our excellent inward investment team, explains here .

It is an impressive catalogue of continuing investment which will keep Coventry and Warwickshire right at the forefront of the sector.

As part of the county council's commitment to the sector we are co-hosting a major Ultra-Low Emission Vehicles event later this year. The Greenfleet Business EV User Event at Stoneleigh Park on October 25 will supply  all the latest information regarding electric and Ultra-Low Emission Vehicles.

One of Warwickshire's great assets is the way the county embraces innovation and forward-thinking alongside such a rich history. That history has substantial economic value today with the tourism industry generating more than £1billion to the economy annually, but there remains plenty of untapped potential. The county council is helping to unlock this with our Visit Local project and businesses have a big role to play in that so please do get involved.

Warwickshire has a proud history indeed - and it reaches in some surprising directions. Centre of attention right now, of course, is the World Cup and our county has a unique, if little-known, stake in the history of the biggest tournament on earth. The biggest ever World Cup crowd, at the match between Brazil and Uruguay in Rio de Janeiro in 1950, was  conservatively put at 199,854 - and the match was refereed by...George Reader, born in Nuneaton. Warwickshire expertise gets everywhere!

Let's hope England's team prospers out in Russia during the next few weeks - not least because, as David Ayton-Hill explains in his Outlook, success for Gareth Southgate's side could generate more than £2 billion for the UK economy.

I hope you enjoy this edition of Warwickshire Means Business - and the World Cup!
