WARWICKSHIRE MEANS BUSINESS

Welcome

Welcome from Mark Ryder, head of transport and economy at Warwickshire County Council

Hello and welcome to the June edition of Warwickshire Means Business.

In this edition we feature our region's place in the vanguard of new vehicle technology. Coventry & Warwickshire has a wonderful history of car-making but also a very exciting future. Our region has long been widely renowned as a home for innovation, where good ideas are forged, encouraged and backed, and that remains very much the case as Steph Williams, a member of our excellent inward investment team, explains here .

It is an impressive catalogue of continuing investment which will keep Coventry and Warwickshire right at the forefront of the sector.

As part of the county council's commitment to the sector we are co-hosting a major Ultra-Low Emission Vehicles event later this year. The Greenfleet Business EV User Event at Stoneleigh Park on October 25 will supply  all the latest information regarding electric and Ultra-Low Emission Vehicles.

One of Warwickshire's great assets is the way the county embraces innovation and forward-thinking alongside such a rich history. That history has substantial economic value today with the tourism industry generating more than £1billion to the economy annually, but there remains plenty of untapped potential. The county council is helping to unlock this with our Visit Local project and businesses have a big role to play in that so please do get involved.

Warwickshire has a proud history indeed - and it reaches in some surprising directions. Centre of attention right now, of course, is the World Cup and our county has a unique, if little-known, stake in the history of the biggest tournament on earth. The biggest ever World Cup crowd, at the match between Brazil and Uruguay in Rio de Janeiro in 1950, was  conservatively put at 199,854 - and the match was refereed by...George Reader, born in Nuneaton. Warwickshire expertise gets everywhere!

Let's hope England's team prospers out in Russia during the next few weeks - not least because, as David Ayton-Hill explains in his Outlook, success for Gareth Southgate's side could generate more than £2 billion for the UK economy.

I hope you enjoy this edition of Warwickshire Means Business - and the World Cup!

Featured News

Ongoing investment in new vehicle technology is great news for the region

The continuing flow of investment in new vehicle technology in Coventry and Warwickshire will keep the region right at the forefront of the sector. With investment in R&D and manufacturing for a range of future transport technologies continuing to grow, it is an excellent news story for the region. Steph Williams, an inward investment officer at Warwickshire County Council, reports .

Future Developments

Coventry & Warwickshire will be home to the new UK Battery Industrialisation Centre, designed to support the Government’s Industrial Strategy for the future of mobility in low carbon and smart and connected transport.

The research centre will enable companies to work together to manufacture the next generation of battery systems across electrode, cell, module and pack levels. New skills are vital for the transport industry, so the centre will also act as a national training and skills hub for battery manufacturing.

The £80m project is among the first of six investment areas announced by the Government to be funded through the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund (ISCF). The project will be led by Coventry City Council, Coventry and Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership, and Warwick Manufacturing Group, at the University of Warwick.  The facility is scheduled to open by 2020.

Meanwhile, German engineering company FEV Group recently announced a new £30m investment with Coventry University. The new research and testing labs will support improvements into different powertrain concepts.

Centres opening this year

The National Automotive Centre, a £150m collaborative investment between Jaguar Land Rover, Tata Motors European Technical Centre, the University of Warwick and the Higher Education Council England, will open its doors this summer.

The space will provide co-location for engineers, designers and academics to work together to focus on long-term automotive research in the areas of testing smart and connected vehicle technology and the next generation of propulsion technology.

The MIRA Technology Institute (MTI), a multi-million pound technology institute being built at HORIBA MIRA in Nuneaton, will open in September.  The institute is a partnership between North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College, Coventry University, Loughborough University, and the University of Leicester.

The MTI will help create specialist skills in areas such as electrification and connected and autonomous cars.

Development sites

Prime development sites for engineering and manufacturing companies have been allocated to support business expansions and new investment.

Prospero Industrial Park, a former site of Rolls Royce, will form the second phase of Ansty Business Park, home to AVL, Fanuc, London Electric Vehicle Company and The Manufacturing Technology Centre.

The 185-acre site will be redeveloped by Manse Opus to provide advanced engineering and manufacturing companies with bespoke design & build opportunities to accommodate 2,300,000 square feet of B1 and B2 uses. Rolls-Royce will continue to retain a key manufacturing facility on the site, producing fan-cases for its large civil aero engines.

Aerospace & defence engineering group MeggittPLC are the first to announce a £130m super hub to consolidate its UK operations to Prospero.

The Southern Manufacturing Sector is a 90-acre development site at HORIBA MIRA offering the automotive industry 1.5 million square feet of B1 and B2 bespoke uses, linking it directly to MIRA’s engineering test facilities. The site provides an extension to the world-renowned Technology Park which is home to leading brands Aston Martin Lagonda, BMW, Caterpillar, Changan, Jaguar Land Rover and Triumph.

Connected & Autonomous Vehicles

Alongside low carbon vehicle development, our automotive and tech cluster are highly active in testing connected and autonomous vehicle research with programmes such as UK Autodrive and UK CITE.

Local companies involved in CAV studies include Jaguar Land Rover, TATA European Technical Centre, RDM Group, Coventry City Council, LG Electronics, HORIBA MIRA and University of Warwick.

Recent company investments

Coventry & Warwickshire continues to attract new investment from businesses seeking to access our engineering professionals and extensive R&D facilities.

Companies include UK start-up Danecca who provide expertise in new battery development, who recently located to Venture House Business Centre (Stratford-on-Avon), Bharat Forge and Satyam Venture Engineering Services.

Marina business launched in style service thanks to small capital grant

A new marina has become established and created jobs ahead of schedule with the support of a grant from Warwickshire County Council.

Hill Farm Marina opened in October 2017 in a picturesque location on the Stratford Canal at Wootton Wawen.

A small marina, with just 50 berths, in a rural setting on a working beef and sheep farm, it has brought another elegant dimension to the county's thriving tourism sector.

The project is a joint venture between farmer David Amor and business consultant David Cooke.

Further expansion, with a new cafe, is already planned from the strong foundation that the small business has laid with the help of a county council Small Capital Grant of just under £20,000.

That funding was invaluable, according to managing director David Cooke, both for what it enabled the business to do and also the speed with which it came through.

"The grant has been hugely helpful," David said. "It enabled us to upgrade facilities, like installing a waste pumping station and laundry room, so that people who moor their boat here know they will have access to everything they need.

"That work added a lot of value to our offer and enabled us to command a much higher mooring fee because of the quality of support services here.

"To build the marina on what was just a farmer's field was a big initial investment from us, so the grant was vital when it came to putting the finishing touches to the project.

"It was also great that the funding came through so quickly. Grants from some organisations can take a long time but this was really quick and enabled us to deliver full services to our customers much sooner than we could otherwise have done."

With guidance from Warwickshire County Council business support advisor Jagdish Soor (backed by the European Regional Development Fund), Hill Farm Marina has hit the ground running.

"Our intention was to employ three people by the end of the year but that has already happened," David said. "Business is good and we are hoping to be full by the end of 2018.

"We have further expansion planned and the grant was indirectly helpful towards that too. The expansion will be part-funded by a bank loan and the fact that we had received a grant from the council, which had looked at our business plan and liked it, definitely gave us some credibility with the bank."

* The Access to Finance advice for the company was delivered as part of the Coventry and Warwickshire Business Support Programme, which is part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund and Warwickshire County Council.

County Council takes innovative approach to new levy transfer

Warwickshire County Council is taking an innovative approach to closing the skills gap in social care with a new initiative utilising the new levy transfer option introduced by the Government in April.

Under the regulations, employers such as the county council, that pay the apprenticeship levy, have the option to transfer up to 10% of their annual levy funds to other organisations which are not levy payers.

This provides extra flexibility in how the levy is used to help close skills gaps. Levy-paying organisations can use funds to invest in helping their supply chain or nominated business to introduce new apprentices of upskill existing staff.

There is currently a restriction to transfer funds to only one company, but rather than select one business, the county council has chosen to invite care-providers to present business projects that will demonstrate the effectiveness of apprenticeships for their business development.

The successful company will have access to fully-funded qualifications for its apprentices, as well as ongoing business support and guidance from the county council. The funding and business support will assist the company to plan for the future and improve its business outcomes, as well as providing training and job opportunities to local people from a variety of backgrounds.

The county council will also ensure that local training-providers are able to compete for the work to deliver the training for the new apprenticeships.

Warwickshire County Council leader, and portfolio holder for economic growth, Cllr Izzi Seccombe said: “We’ve chosen to maximise this opportunity provided by the new regulations, to address the skills gap in the social care sector.

"With an ever-growing demand on services and a decrease in staffing availability, the growing challenges for recruiting to this sector in Warwickshire - and the rest of the country - are well known. This project will lead to a boost of a number of newly skilled workers in the social care sector and we hope will have a significant impact on the lives of our residents.”

Levy Business Support

In recent months the county council's Business Skills Advisor, Fay Winterburn, has heard from many Levy-paying businesses who have spoken of their Levy underspend and how news of the Levy transfer option has left some unsure where to transfer to, if at all.

Fay said: “We are really pleased to be one of the first levy-paying organisations to utilise this opportunity and support a sector in such great need. I would urge any levy-paying organisations to explore all the options. The nominated transfer organisation could be any non-levy paying business you wish to engage with.

“This is such a wonderful opportunity to take a whole new approach with apprenticeship support. For example, is there a local charity that your business would like to help who might benefit from a new administrative or marketing apprentice to build their fundraising profile? Could you call upon your workforce for inspiration on who to support and to present ideas?

“I am very much looking forward to supporting more Levy-paying organisations to also explore their transfer opportunities and helping other businesses to develop.”

Tackling Skills Shortages - a five-point plan to help businesses

Through talking to businesses across the county, it has become increasingly apparent to Warwickshire County Council and the Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce that skills shortages are becoming a significant barrier to growth.

Last month saw the launch of the county council’s five-point plan to support businesses in tackling skill shortages.

Now, in collaboration with the Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce and Kenilworth's The HR Consultancy, the county is pleased to announce the five steps to tackle such shortages and build tailored plans to suit individual business needs.

Step One - Complete the online registration form to join the campaign and benefit from the great support available.

Step Two - Engage with a dedicated business skills advisor to discuss your skills needs.

Step Three - Attend three workshops (details below) designed to offer lots of useful tips and strategies to consider when addressing skills shortages (exploring various labour pools, building effective vacancy adverts, non-salary benefits, engaging with schools, accessing training funding support, attracting new talent, understanding how apprenticeships can work for you, business support programmes).

Step Four - Working with your business skills advisor to identify which strategies or tips from the workshops you would like to replicate in your business and building effective skills plans utilising the support identified.

Step Five - Regular contact and reviews to track progress and link additional support if or when required.

A series of workshops are to be held at Kenilworth Holiday Inn, 212 Abbey End, Kenilworth, CV8 1ED on the following dates.

Friday 13th July: 8.30am-1.30pm Exploring Alternative Routes to Recruitment

Friday 20th July: 8.30am-1.30pm Developing Essential Skills

Friday 27th July: 8.30am-1.30pm Business Support for You

Bright future for Golden B with Business Support Programme support

A new Warwickshire mother, who altered some of her favourite dresses to help enable her to breastfeed in style after the birth of her first child, has turned the idea into a business.

Sophie Titchmarsh and her husband James welcomed their daughter, Grace, into the world in March 2017, but 32-year-old Sophie soon found herself wanting to wear more stylish items than the traditional maternity dresses on the market - while still being able to feed her new baby easily.

What started out as an experiment has now transformed into a thriving start-up for the trained costumier with the Royal Shakespeare Company, with her own company, GoldenB, preparing to release a new summer range after launching in March this year.

After taking her original idea to the Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce, Sophie received help and support from the Coventry and Warwickshire Business Support Programme.

The programme, which is funded by the European Regional Development Fund, in partnership with Coventry City Council, Warwickshire County Council and the district and borough Councils, helped her in terms of website design, marketing advice and tips on how to develop her brand.

And with that help, Sophie, from Stratford-upon-Avon, has found a niche in the market and took more than 30 orders from around the country on Golden B’s first day in business.

Sophie said: “When I first had Grace one of the many challenges I faced as a new mother was finding fashionable clothing suitable for breastfeeding. I was desperate to wear my pre-baby style dresses, but nothing I could find was breastfeeding friendly. All that was available on the market were maternity clothes, with nursing access. They are obviously designed to flatter a bump so look completely wrong post-birth.

“There are a lot of clothes out there for women to wear during their pregnancy, but nothing for them to nurse their baby in, once they’ve given birth. I wanted something different, and couldn’t see anything out there, so I decided to solve the problem. I started using my work skills to experiment on my own clothes and when I got talking to other mothers they told me what a great idea it was. The dream is for Golden B to be a major, international internet brand.”

Sophie added: “I was recommended by a friend to take my idea to the Chamber and the help they have given has been invaluable.

“They have helped me on so many levels, from giving me ideas about when to launch new lines and how to use feedback to create a better product through to advising me on choosing the right stockists to enhance the Golden B brand.”

Tanya King, a business coach with the Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce, has advised Sophie every step of the way so far.

She said: “I think Sophie has an excellent idea here, she really has tapped into a niche in a constantly expanding market and she has the perfect background to make it a huge success.

“We can often help someone take a great idea and turn it into a successful business and Sophie has worked with us to do this in the case of Golden B.”

New partnership builds exciting new skills links in hospitality sector

"This collaborative approach to identifying and solving problems is a blueprint for how we can look at improving skills issues in other sectors."

Warwickshire County Council is committed to addressing the skills gap by forging productive links between businesses and schools and colleges in the county.

This strategy supports employers to get the talented new blood they need while assisting young people to become equipped for productive careers - and in turn helps keep the county's economy strong.

During recent employability events and feedback from the Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber branch meetings, many hoteliers spoke of difficulties they face in attracting people to advertised roles and to the sector in general. Businesses asked for help in promoting the sector to young people and encouraging them to consider training for a career in the catering industry.

Previously the sector has utilised a blend of apprentices and European workers to bridge any gaps and meet the demand of the industry with a steady level of retention and upwards progression. But the industry has seen a dramatic drop in applicants and students joining apprenticeship and study programmes and this is causing serious operational issues.

To tackle this problem a partnership was created, headed by Chris Steadman of Q Hotels, Dave Lennox from The Careers and Enterprise Company and Fay Winterburn, Warwickshire County Council's business skills advisor.

This partnership has drawn in support from the Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce and the Coventry and Warwickshire Growth Hub, along with colleges and training providers. It's mission: To raise awareness of the hospitality sector, enhance existing support and, critically, look at how the sector and associated partners can adapt their approach to the changing market and attract talent.

Several factors are hampering the recruitment of apprentices for the hospitality sector. They include more young people deciding to go to university or take a gap year or apply for local jobs. Many young people are simply unaware of opportunities provided by apprenticeships, particularly in this sector.

The new campaign kicked off with a highly successful Hospitality Employability event which brought together 13 Warwickshire schools, college and training providers and six hotels. Feedback revealed that many people made great connections and identified future routes of support.

The group talked through the difficulties faced by the sector, forged common areas of focus and created a suite of actions that could be shared by all. One of those actions swiftly followed at Shipston High School where all Year Ten students took part in a workshop showing the varied opportunities available for them within the industry.

Joanne Hammick, general manager at The Stratford Manor, Q Hotels, attended to talk about her role and career. She also brought along two of her apprentices who are studying for their degree while working for the hotel.

The group talked about various job roles, apprenticeships and opportunities such as working while getting a degree financed. A practical fun session followed where students had to set a formal dinner table and come up with suggestions for what would be needed to be considered a four-star hotel.

Louise Moorman the Work Related Co-ordinator at Shipston High School, talked about the wonderful feedback from students. Some of the quotes included: ‘Best careers lesson ever,’ ‘I hadn’t thought of doing that’ and ‘I am going to apply for that apprenticeship.’ Three students have already signed up for work experience places at the hotel.

Fay Winterburn said: "Receiving this kind of feedback from the young people is very rewarding as this event was something new for us and developed by purely listening to the business needs of Warwickshire. We are very proud of its success which was only made possible by the group members reacting so quickly to the support on offer.

"This collaborative approach to identifying and solving problems is a blueprint for how we can look at improving the skills issues for other sectors that may also be experiencing skills shortages."

Employment Hub will support young people with disabilities

Warwickshire County Council has warmly welcomed the creation of a new Employment Hub to help young people with disabilities gain employment in Coventry and Warwickshire.

The Employment Hub at Hereward College, Bramston Crescent, in Tile Hill, Coventry, will help young people to source work placements, skills training and support in the workplace. It will also offer them money-management advice and training, benefit advice and travel training.

The Employment Hub, working in connection with the Coventry and Warwickshire Growth Hub, will also support employers with disability awareness training, analysing and adapting job roles and promoting good employment practice.

Warwickshire County Council business skills advisor Fay Winterburn said: "We are delighted to see Hereward take extra steps to build employer connections.

"Through our Business Skills Support service at the county council it is clear that an increasing number of businesses are now open to exploring work placement and internship opportunities with the college.

"The Employment Hub and additional services now on offer will most certainly support the college with employer engagement. We look forward to seeing their profile grow as an effective skills source and recruitment solution for local businesses"

"Having recently spent time with a number of Hereward students it is easy to see why the college's conversion-rate to permanent employment is so high. Their students are enthusiastic, dedicated and keen to develop. Why wouldn't a business consider Hereward students as valuable members of their workforce"

Paul Cook, principal at Hereward College, believes the Employment Hub will materially help secure permanent jobs for its learners.

“We believe this project will make a big difference," he said. “The enthusiasm shown by the employers we already work with is inspiring for us as a college and our learners.

“We currently deliver a supported internship programme as a way of achieving sustainable employment and we believe it is one of the best vehicles to have emerged over the last ten years.

“The Growth Hub, in connection with the CWLEP, is going to help us secure business mentors for our learners. We now have the network with the business community in Coventry and Warwickshire which has opened up new opportunities for our learners that we haven’t had before, so this Employment Hub is going to be a fantastic opportunity for everyone involved.”

Craig Humphrey, managing director of the Coventry and Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership Growth Hub, said he and his team would be working hard to ensure this new scheme was inclusive to all.

“The Employment Hub will broaden the choice of employees for businesses and become a centre of excellence for young people with disabilities throughout Coventry and Warwickshire,” he said. “It will provide a one-stop shop for businesses and students of Hereward College.

“At a time when the economy has challenges, we need to open up career pathways instead of young people having a single-minded focus of going to university and not considering vocational training. Any opportunity should be open to all and having this Employment Hub means we can provide solutions to businesses.”

Good destination websites boost tourism for business

Businesses are being encouraged to get involved in a new project to help towns and villages across Warwickshire to boost tourism and spending in their local area.

As part of its commitment to supporting the economy in rural areas, Warwickshire County Council is coordinating a ‘Visit Local’ project to help some of the county’s smaller towns to realise their untapped visitor potential.

Phase One of the scheme will see the launch this month of a new online toolkit and working illustration of how to create a great website aimed at visitors. It’s a step by step, interactive guide to make it easy for Warwickshire’s hidden jewels to get themselves on the tourism map.

"Warwickshire has so much to offer beyond its more famous attractions," said Alex Holmes, Visitor Economy Manager for the County Council. "Every town has its unique selling point and we need these under-explored places in Warwickshire to promote their strengths.

“Getting a good web presence that entices visitors is an important stepping stone and we want all businesses to get involved with helping their local patch grow tourism.

“If visitor numbers increase, it is good news for all businesses, not just the tourist attractions themselves but those in retail, food and drink, accommodation providers and other services on the high street.”

Businesses have a role to play in the programme, which will give guidance to towns off the traditional tourist track to promote themselves.

The toolkit has been informed by new pilot website projects under way in Atherstone, Studley and Alcester.

Alex said: "Evidence from other areas of the country shows that by working together, local partnerships can attract more tourism.  So it's great for businesses to get involved and be part of the package to promote their own area."

Warwickshire is always popular not just with overseas tourists but also with visitors across the UK and within the local area. Visitors make a huge contribution to the county with the tourism industry generating in excess of £1billion to the economy annually.

Some towns in Warwickshire already have strong partnerships that work together to promote themselves effectively. Visit Shipston celebrates the town's reported status as the tenth happiest town in the UK, while Love Coleshill runs a voucher scheme and events to encourage people to shop local.

Tech Central's message to businesses: "Tell us what you want"

Tech Central is looking to expand its range of events for the rest of this year and beyond - and has sent out a call to Coventry and Warwickshire businesses to help inform their programme.

The year 2018 is already set to be a great year of events held by Tech Central, a collaboration of private and public sector organisations created to support businesses within the digital and tech sectors.

Already in the pipeline for this year are collaborations with Warwick Arts Centre, Wellesbourne Innovation Park, HB&O and the Institute of Coding. But Tech Central leaders are looking to curate some more focused events addressing the key issues faced by businesses in the Coventry and Warwickshire region.

Whether companies are looking to adopt new software but don't know where to begin; have heard about the cloud but don't know where it is; or want to move from spreadsheets to accountancy software but have no idea which to choose, these are exactly the type of 'Digital 101' events which Tech Central are looking to organise and collaborate on - they just need to know what businesses want.

Other themes which could be covered include:

  • CRM
  • Security Systems
  • Website Hosting or Management
  • Access to Finance
  • Accounting Software
  • Migrating to Office 365 or G Suite for Business.

But that list is not exclusive. All ideas for subjects of future Tech Central meetings are welcome.

Tech Central co-founder Sarah Windrum said: “Since 2016 Tech Central has brought together some great local businesses, including Baxi Boilers, RNF Digital, and Freestyle Innovation, to collaborate on innovative new projects. Now we really want to engage with more businesses who need practical support to adopt the best technology into their day-to-day operations.

"Our next event at Coventry University in conjunction with HB&O will help them do just that and could also inject cash back into their business in the process.”

It will include trackside and signals demonstrations, static rolling stock displays and an Innovation Show in partnership with the UK Rail Research and Innovation Network.

There will also be a National Rail Convention and a focus on skills with a 'Next Generation' project promoting the industry to undergraduate engineers and apprentices.

The Midlands Engine is exhibiting at this major showcase of Midlands and UK rail capability, looking to meet investors from the UK and overseas who want to learn more about opportunities in the UK rail industry, the most buoyant and fastest growing in Europe.

The Midlands is a core part of the UK’s £7bn rail manufacturing industry which employs over 80,000 people across the country and helps drive the UK advanced manufacturing and engineering sector. Over 600,000 people in the Midlands work in manufacturing, delivering over 21% of the UK’s annual manufacturing output.

Sir John Peace, chair of the Midlands Engine, said: “The Midlands Engine area plays a huge role in UK plc’s rail sector. We are home to a young, well-educated population and to many Original Equipment Manufacturers, universities, test and development centres and engineering colleges.

Rail is also vitally important to Midlands Engine and our ambitious transport programme Midlands Connect. The combined expertise of our Midlands transport technology sectors is of international significance and Midlands Engine provides a platform for organisations to work across sectors to develop new and improved world leading products and services”.

Warwickshire Outlook

World Cup – a much needed boost to the High Street?

England's footballers are striving for World Cup glory in Russia - and if they make it all the way through to the final (we can dream!) the UK economy would benefit to the tune of £2.72 billion. Warwickshire County Council's head of economy and skills David Ayton-Hill explains.

While the nation is getting behind its football heroes at the World Cup, there is much more at stake for the country than mere sporting glory - a national team's strong performance in a major tournament generates real economic benefits.

Research by Lloyd’s Bank has highlighted that there has been a significant spending boost for a number of countries that have reached the semi-finals in recent World Cups. Since 1990, consumer spending has grown by an average of 4.5% among semi-finalist countries in the year following a tournament, compared to an average of 3.3% the year before.

I wrote in Warwickshire Means Business last winter about the importance to businesses of fully exploiting opportunities when they arise, with Christmas the most obvious example. Well, a major sporting tournament, and most of all a football World Cup, presents such an opportunity and one which comes round only once every four years (all being well - England's failure to qualify for the finals in 1974 and 1994 meant the nation's businesses, as well as football fans, missed out!).

Research undertaken by VoucherCodes and the Centre for Retail Research has estimated that, during the 2018 World Cup, one in four people in the UK will spend money on drinks throughout the tournament and watch England games at their local pub.

Consumers are expected to spend £193m in high street pubs, restaurants, cafes and bars across the country throughout the tournament. If Gareth Southgate’s men reach the final, this figure could reach £488m.

Meanwhile, with 86% of fans expecting to watch the tournament at home, retailers could take £240m on food and £297m on alcohol if England surpass the group stages, with this combined figure rising to £1.12bn if the team makes it to the final.

An England appearance in the final would see World Cup fever reach such a peak that the UK economy would benefit from an overall spending boost of £2.72bn, taking into account parties, barbeques and souvenir sales.

However, an early exit for the team could also have some wider economic upsides.  As the nation collectively commiserates, residents may well be tempted to undertake some retail therapy to try and cheer themselves up - a year after Brazil lost in the 1998 final to hosts France, consumer spending there rose by 9% - compared to just 4% in the previous year.

A bit of a silver lining there, then - but let's hope that England fans are taking up the party option rather than the retail therapy route!
