WARWICKSHIRE MEANS BUSINESS

Valuable insights from Teacher Encounters

Teaching staff and Careers Advisors from schools across the county received important insights into the skills need of employers today from the Teacher Encounters programme.

Between February and July this year, the Warwickshire Careers Hub (which is part of Warwickshire County Council's Employability and Skills team) organised Teacher Encounter days with six local companies - MIRA, BAM Construction, the UK Battery Industrialisation Centre, LISI Aerospace, Jaguar Land Rover and The Village Hotel.

The visits enabled teaching staff and careers advisers/leads to get out of their school or college and go into an employer to find out about how the organisations are run, the different roles available and what young people need to do to get into the industry.

Among the Teacher Encounter days was one at the Village Hotel which focused on the Hospitality sector. Those attending heard from the General Manager and Sales/Marketing team members and were given a tour of the hotel, speaking to staff about the different roles including those in the leisure centre, reception, restaurant/bar. They also heard how they hotel management is aiming to reduce their carbon footprint, and also had a quick word with the maintenance person - though he was on an urgent job so time was precious!. A couple of the attendees also had a chance to pull the perfect pint (alcohol free!).
