WARWICKSHIRE MEANS BUSINESS

Nuneaton enjoying resurgence of town centre retail and leisure investment

The arrival in Nuneaton of some of the world’s top cyclists earlier this month attracted many visitors - and coincided with a great boost for the town with new retail and leisure occupiers opening in the town centre.

At a time when high streets around the UK are struggling to attract and retain occupiers, Nuneaton is bucking the trend.

With a healthy town-centre retail occupancy rate, new housing coming into the town and a strong local economy, it is attracting a range of independent and national chains back into the town centre.

The town food and drink offer has been bolstered by the arrival of two new cafes and a revived pub. The new café bar, The Time, has taken a prominent town centre pitch in Market Place, and Chai Express on Bond Street is located a short walk from Nuneaton Station.

Meanwhile, the former Granby Pub has been refurbished and renamed The Black Swan in Hand, a name derived from a number of former town centre pubs.

Also new for visitors to the town centre are Sassy Giraffe on Newdegate Street and Joco Interiors in the Abbey Gate Shopping Centre, both having opened this year. A shortwalk away in The Ropewalk, a new TJ Hughes department store has replaced the BHS anchor store and a new Pure Gym has been trading very strongly.

The latest name to join this growing list of local and national retail and leisure occupiers is The Bakery on Harefield Road, offering artisan breads, cakes and pastries. Coming in October will be Tiny Town, a new venue for parents and young children to spend some fun time in the town centre at this new role play café, created by the company behind Funtastic which already operates a soft play centre in Freer Street.

It all adds up to a very positive vibe right now in Nuneaton which was much enjoyed by visitors when the town was chosen to host the fourth stage of the 2018 OVO Energy Tour of Britain on September 5th.

For those interested in joining the resurgence of the retail and leisure industry in Nuneaton town centre, a number of retail units are available - as is free and confidential business support from the Coventry and Warwickshire Growth Hub and its partner organisations. This can include help with finding a unit, rent or rate relief, marketing and advice.
