WARWICKSHIRE MEANS BUSINESS

Welcome

Welcome from Cllr Izzi Seccombe, leader of Warwickshire County Council

Hello and welcome to the September edition of Warwickshire Means Business.

I hope you all had a great summer and managed to take some time out from your busy schedules for a well-earned rest.

In this issue we chat to Jagdish Soor, a man whom many of you may know and from whose expertise you may have already benefited. A successful entrepreneur in his own right, Jagdish joined Warwickshire County Council's Economy & Skills team as a business support advisor in 2017 and his work for us since has helped lever around £2.6 million private match funding back into the local economy. In our lead feature he explains his role with the council team and his work with businesses in Warwickshire.

It continues to be full steam ahead for Leamington’s thriving gaming industry as 'Silicon Spa’ prepares to host the inaugural Interactive Futures gaming festival early next year. The event will bring together the creative and games communities to share the latest industry developments, as well as insights into training opportunities and even some new releases - and it is great, and entirely appropriate, that it will take place in Warwickshire.

With Coventry and Warwickshire also at the heart of the UK’s engineering industry, it is essential that the region continues to offer first-class training to the next generation of engineers. Our Skills for Employment programme, along with our partner organisations, is constantly working towards this objective. It is exciting to see a brand new Degree Apprenticeship Centre, funded by the government through the Coventry and Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership, to be constructed at the University of Warwick.

Meanwhile, our own Economy & Skills team has welcomed new recruit Emily Newport. An economics graduate, Emily has already got stuck in having written the latest Quarterly Labour Market Bulletin which contains much invaluable information for employers across the county.

The latest economic data for Warwickshire, contained in that Quarterly Labour Market Bulletin, show that the county’s economy remains strong. Here at Warwickshire County Council we remain fully committed to working with businesses to ensure that economy remains vibrant and continues to grow.

The Coventry & Warwickshire Business Support Programme remains at your disposal - and it was very pleasing to see that 95% of businesses who responded to our recent survey said they would recommend the programme to other organisations. Please do give us a call so see how we can help you.

Meet Jagdish Soor - the business advisor who has levered £2.6million private funding into Warwickshire's economy

Since joining Warwickshire County Council's Economy & Skills team as a Business Support Advisor in June 2017 Jagdish Soor has helped businesses access around £1.6 million in grants, loans and equity funding support which in turn has leveraged around £2.6 million private match funding back into the local economy. Jagdish has also provided a wealth of advice on behalf of the Council and its partner organisation University of Warwick Science Park.

A successful businessman in his own right, Jag has an enormous fund of experience and knowledge. Here we find out more about him.

"Success comes from having a great team around you - and Warwickshire County Council's Economy & Skills team is an exemplar. Between us we are able to offer a complete service"

Jag - what is your role with Warwickshire County Council?

I lead on the business support programme and the small capital grants scheme. This entails providing focused business advice and mentorship to a whole spectrum of companies and enabling them access to finance to help support and sustain their growth plans.

It is a role for which you are well-qualified. Tell us about your business background.

I am a qualified engineer and set out in the industry in the late 1970s working for a Leamington Spa company. They promised me fortune, fame and travel - but that's not quite how it worked out! However, through hard work and having diversified the company’s products successfully into other larger industry sectors such as electronics, aerospace and automotive, I doubled their turnover and was appointed MD.

At that point, I had my “Oliver Twist” moment and dared to ask the board for more - in the way of shareholdings. When they refused, I had the motivation and impetus to set up my own business.

Like all start-ups, it was a steep learning curve with limited funding but in the first five years the business grew significantly and it was then acquired by a major plc listed on the London Stock Exchange. After a two-year earn out period, and having learned a great deal about corporate life, I went on to set up, acquire and merge various businesses within the advanced manufacturing and construction sectors. I also created many joint ventures in the Far East where I still have a controlling interest in an electronic component manufacturing facility.

I also actively invest into early stage, emerging-technology companies and provide expertise on becoming investor-ready, exit strategies and how to access finance from equity funds or venture capital.

So how did you come to join the council as business support advisor?

After taking a sabbatical for personal reasons, I started assisting the University of Warwick Science Park in the delivery of its Business Ready programme which provides high-level advice to technology and innovation-led businesses. Through this I was seconded to WCC to work with the Economy & Skills team to promote its business support and grants initiatives.

Many small businesses have commented how important your help to them has been to them. That must be very rewarding?

The secret is to offer not generic business advice but be entirely business-focused, working closely with each client to identify the challenges within their organisation. I try to offer practical and logical strategies but, more importantly, advice based upon proven real-world experience. Whilst sound, robust business mentorship is paramount, real success comes from engaging with the client at an emotional level. Businesses are operated by people, so any organisation has emotive elements to it.

Rewarding? Very much so, especially when most of your clients still want to meet for coffee after the engagement has expired.

It helps that in Warwickshire there is so much raw material - business ideas, talent and enterprise - to work with?

I have been a Warwickshire lad since age four, when my parents first came to the UK from Kenya and settled in Royal Leamington Spa. After 54 years I would like to think I know the county well but since joining the WCC team I've been constantly amazed at the diversity of businesses within Warwickshire - from rural camp sites, gin distilleries and gaming and app developers to companies innovating cutting-edge technology for electric vehicles. The landscape has been transformed in recent years so it’s so fantastic to see Warwickshire's economy adapting so well and remaining buoyant.

What is the most satisfying thing about your role?

The default answer would be 'making a difference to a client’s business' –  but that should be a given. Business support can be over-complicated with jargon but small business success stems from a very simple concept: attitude.

A positive attitude will lead to success, so the most satisfying part of my role is knowing that old-school business practices, mixed with experience, still works.

You work very closely with the council's Economy & Skills team, of course...

Success comes from having a great team around you and the WCC team is an exemplar. Between us we are able to offer a complete service from company start-up advice, inward investment, property searches, grants, loans, Equity and VC funding through to education, skills and recruitment.

The team is also further strengthened by our external stakeholders and partners from the University of Warwick Science Park, Coventry & Warwickshire Growth Hub, Coventry University Enterprises, Coventry & Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce, Coventry City Council and the Midlands Engine Investment Fund. The sum of which makes a very passionate and client- focused team and I am proud to be part of it.

Business Support Programme highly recommended in survey

A business support programme, managed by Warwickshire County Council, has received very positive feedback from a mid-term survey with 95% of businesses which responded saying they would recommend the programme.

Launched in 2016, the programme is designed to help SMEs in the sub-region with a broad range of advice and support from one-to-one mentor sessions to workshops on a variety of topics.

The programme is part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund with further support from Warwickshire County Council, University of Warwick Science Park, Coventry and Warwickshire Reinvestment Trust and Warwickshire’s five district and borough councils.

Anecdotal feedback from many of the 301 business supported by the programme in its first two years was very positive, but Warwickshire County Council commissioned M.E.L Research to undertake a Mid-Term Programme Evaluation to get feedback from participants and help identify potential areas for improvement for future funding opportunities.

The survey revealed a high level of appreciation among businesses for the help they had received. Most said they had received the right type of support (86%) and the right amount of help (83%) at the right time (85%).

The vast majority of businesses (89%) felt they had gained in confidence as a result of involvement with the Business Support Programme while 80% said they had learned important new skills/techniques from it.

Warwickshire County Council head of economy & skills Dave Ayton-Hill said: "We commissioned the survey because, while informal feedback suggested that businesses were very appreciative of the programme, we wanted to identify any gaps in the support it provides and so improve it if we can.

"It is very encouraging that 95% of respondents would recommend the programme to other organisations. That is testament to the calibre of advisors involved in it, both here at the county council and our partner organisations.

"The survey shows that the programme is having a tangible, beneficial effect on business and the region's economy. I would encourage any small business to get in touch with us to find out more about what we offer."

The strands of support offered by the programme are:

Business Start-Up Support (Coventry & Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce)

Business Ready (University of Warwick Science Park)

Creative Warwickshire/Creative Springboard (Coventry & Warwickshire Reinvestment Trust)

*  Jump Start/Business Dream (Coventry & Warwickshire Reinvestment Trust)

WCC Business Investment (Warwickshire County Council).

This support is part of a wider programme of ERDF-funded business support activity in Coventry and Warwickshire.

For more information about this and other support available to grow your business, please contact Coventry & Warwickshire Growth Hub on 0300 060 3747.

Exciting investments in region's auto tech sector

A busy September for the UK automotive and electric vehicle technology sector has featured a series of exciting investment announcements for the Coventry & Warwickshire region.

Delegates from around the world gathered at the ICC in Birmingham for the inaugural global ZEV (Zero Emissions Vehicle) Summit.

Organised by the Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV), with support from the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy and the Department for International Trade, the summit was held to drive forward global zero emission vehicle take-up and put UK automotive technology in a global spotlight.

The event attracted delegates from global OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers - and coincided with some excellent news regarding EV investments for the Coventry & Warwickshire area.

Williams Engineering and Unipart announced the creation of Hyperbat, a new battery manufacturing facility in Coventry. The first customer will be Aston Martin Lagonda for its new RapideE premium EV, currently under development at Gaydon.

Meanwhile, EVN and Leclanché SA of France announced plans for an EV Charging Centre of Excellence in Warwick as part of an investment of around £200 million around the UK. EVN is actively developing 200 fast-charging stations throughout the country and Leclanché has been selected as their partner to supply battery backup for the planned ultra-fast chargers.

Further good news came from Geely’s London Electric Vehicle Company (LEVC) whose TX5 eCity battery hybrid taxi took pride of place at the ICC main entrance at the summit. LEVC, which is based at Ansty Technology Park, has announced trials with public and private partners of its new light commercial van, based on the TX5 EV platform.

At the ZEV summit, Chris Gubbey of LEVC spoke about the value of public private partnership, referring in particular to the GoElectric Taxi Scheme, the UK’s most extensive programme for encouraging taxi drivers to upgrade to an electric vehicle, which was launched in Coventry on September 5th.

The initiative, led by Coventry City council, is supported by a range of companies including, the  LEVC, Irish energy company ESB, Siemens and the taxi app Gett.

Elsewhere, Jaguar Land Rover’s Ralph Speth reaffirmed the company’s commitment to its UK home in Coventry. The company’s new i-Pace, developed in Coventry & Warwickshire, was on display at the summit.

Coventry & Warwickshire colleagues were delighted to support DIT with a delegation of Chinese OEMs and the not-for-profit group EV100, which works with government and industry to support the development of the EV industry. During the visit the group announced plans to establish an Esport (electric vehicles sports) industry in China, and spoke to a number of potential partners during the visit.

Looking ahead, preparations are advancing for the Greenfleet EV event at Stoneleigh Park, Kenilworth on October 25th. This Ultra-Low Emission Vehicle event is being held in association with Warwickshire County Council, supported by OLEV, and will feature host auto journalist Quentin Wilson, presentations from the industry and OLEV, opportunities to test drive vehicles and round table break-out sessions.

More than 1,000 plumbers and electricians newly-trained at WCG centre

Over 1,000 young people have had the opportunity to learn a new trade at an enhanced construction learning facility at Royal Leamington Spa College since it opened three years ago to address a construction industry skills gap across the region.

The Construction Training Centre, part of the Warwickshire College Group (WCG), was redesigned and expanded with new classrooms and practical workshop areas to facilitate the teaching of electrical installation and plumbing in a range of different learning routes.

Since its completion, the redeveloped centre has seen a 15 per cent increase in student numbers and an increase in employer engagement. It is now able to deliver a broader curriculum, offering a range of post-16 qualifications and part-time courses alongside advanced and higher apprenticeships.

The £480,000 building was partly funded with £239,000 from the Government’s Local Growth Fund through the Coventry and Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership (CWLEP) with the remainder matched by WCG funding.

A total of 1,097 plumbers and electricians have been trained at the centre to date with 69 16-to-18-year-olds having secured apprenticeships after gaining full-time qualifications. Over 50 construction businesses in Coventry and Warwickshire have been supported to address the recognised skills gap within their sector.

In addition, over the last two summers, the centre has hosted an international programme with students from China who have been taught UK construction methods. The programme drew on expertise from the planning office at Warwickshire County Council and local heritage organisations to educate learners about local construction methods and historic buildings.

The new facility has also helped launch the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment which is now entering its third year of teaching. This highly-valued qualification is a predominantly classroom-based option that provides a route to university for students wishing to become an architect, quantity surveyor, or civil engineer.

The project is part of WCG’s strategy to support construction employers in the region with skilled students. In September 2019, a number of new courses will commence at its Rugby College to support the development of higher level technical and professional skills in construction and technology at levels 3, 4 and above.

Peter Husband, Group Deputy Principal, Apprenticeships, HE & Innovation for WCG, said:“This has been a timely investment to meet the current skills shortage in the construction industry which is experiencing a boom in commercial building projects and domestic housing builds, both regionally and nationally.

"Construction is a vital contributor to our economy and this project will help us address the growing demand for skilled plumbers and electricians that the sector needs.”

Emily relishing her role as part of "great team" at Economy & Skills

"The work I do here helps people who are directly engaged in helping keep Warwickshire's economy strong."

Economics can be a dry subject, dense and off-putting, but when skilfully deployed it can be a real force for good - and that's why Emily Newport is loving her role at Warwickshire County Council.

Emily was recently appointed as the economist within the council's Economy & Skills team based at Barrack Street in Warwick.

It is a position for which she is well-qualified having graduated in economics at the University of Northampton where she covered areas ranging from data analysis and the history of economic theory to development economics and debates surrounding economic ideas.

It is the latter areas which really captured Emily's interest - the business of wielding economics in a form which can shape and support communities. To be of practical help.

Working in sales, which she did immediately post-uni, she found pretty unfulfilling. So when this opportunity arose at Warwickshire County Council, it had enormous appeal.

"I studied psychology at A'level and hated it," she said. "It was all case-studies and theory whereas I really wanted to learn about things that affect people and the structure of things so that hopefully my work could then affect people in a good way.

"My dad suggested economics. I was a bit hesitant at first but went to study it in Northampton and was soon loving it. I love the socio-economical side of it, understanding how it affects people, how places and communities operate, then hopefully delivering research that can really help.

"The more I studied economics, the more I wanted to work in local government because that's where people are at the heart of what you do and you can really make a difference. When I saw the job advertised at Warwickshire County Council I was really keen because opportunities like this are rare. When I got the job I could hardly believe it!"

It's a lot more fulfilling than sales - and more challenging, if slightly less fun, than the summer of 2016 which Em spent as a 'Red Bull' girl motoring round the Midlands promoting the energy drink.

Those roles served a purpose but, as part of the Economy & Skills team, Emily is now on her long-term career-path. She had already produced her first major project - the county council's highly-respected  Quarterly Labour Market Bulletin - and is eagerly getting to grips with other work.

"I really enjoyed putting the Quarterly Labour Market Bulletin together because it's full of information that is of real use and relevance to employers, local authorities and business organisations," she said. "The work I do here helps people who are directly engaged in helping keep Warwickshire's economy strong. I didn't want a job which was data-heavy and just crunching figures almost for their own sake.

"The Economy & Skills team is a great team to be part of. They are really open and friendly and I settled in straight away. Straight away it was clear how much they all care about what they do. There is a great range of expertise and whenever any one of them is dealing with a business they will so everything they can to help - and if they can't they find try to someone who can.

"There is a real sense of vocation. That's what I hoped it would be like working for local government - and it is. I'm really happy to be part of the team."

Quilter's Den expanding with business programme support

A finance consultant who has been sewing for over 40 years has relaunched a business to teach others her skills.

Karen McIlwraith expanded her sewing skills by learning to quilt at the Quilter’s Den in Smith Street, Warwick, six years ago.

Now, with the help of the Warwickshire County Council-backed Coventry and Warwickshire Business Support Programme she is relaunching the specialist shop.

After the previous owner semi-retired, Karen decided to buy the Quilter’s Den and put her own stamp on the business, expanding on the services offered to appeal to a wider audience.

Alongside a full-time asset finance role, she has spent the last few years teaching others how to sew. Working occasional weekends at the shop, she has now launched a series of practical workshops aimed at passing on her skills to people of all ages and abilities.

After taking her idea for the relaunch of the business to Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce, Karen received help and support from the Coventry and Warwickshire Business Support Programme.

The programme, funded by the European Regional Development Fund in partnership with Coventry City Council, Warwickshire County Council and the District and Borough Councils, helped her with networking and attending business events in the region.

The Chamber’s support and advice helped Karen to build the reputation of her business and provided her with advice on the steps to take after it relaunched.

Karen said: “I first became interested in sewing through my great-aunt who gave me an old hand-treadle sewing machine when I was seven and since then I haven’t been able to stop! So it made sense that eventually I would own my own business selling gorgeous fabrics and sharing my passion for textile craft.

“I approached the Chamber of Commerce as I knew their Business Support Programme would help me with the business and their advice and support became a crucial aid in reinforcing my existing business knowledge.

“I decided that the introduction of dressmaking and quilting workshops would appeal to a wider demographic - and they have been incredibly popular so far with lots of guest tutors contributing.

"With the support of the Chamber I intend to increase the range of workshops as well as offering City and Guilds courses in Patchwork and Quilting from January 2019."

Tanya King, a business coach with the Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce, has advised and supported Karen in developing the business.

She said: “We’re excited to continue guiding and supporting Karen in the future as she increases her product range.

“Karen has attended our masterclass events and workshops and we have been able to offer one-to-one support to help the company develop after the relaunch.”

Nuneaton enjoying resurgence of town centre retail and leisure investment

The arrival in Nuneaton of some of the world’s top cyclists earlier this month attracted many visitors - and coincided with a great boost for the town with new retail and leisure occupiers opening in the town centre.

At a time when high streets around the UK are struggling to attract and retain occupiers, Nuneaton is bucking the trend.

With a healthy town-centre retail occupancy rate, new housing coming into the town and a strong local economy, it is attracting a range of independent and national chains back into the town centre.

The town food and drink offer has been bolstered by the arrival of two new cafes and a revived pub. The new café bar, The Time, has taken a prominent town centre pitch in Market Place, and Chai Express on Bond Street is located a short walk from Nuneaton Station.

Meanwhile, the former Granby Pub has been refurbished and renamed The Black Swan in Hand, a name derived from a number of former town centre pubs.

Also new for visitors to the town centre are Sassy Giraffe on Newdegate Street and Joco Interiors in the Abbey Gate Shopping Centre, both having opened this year. A shortwalk away in The Ropewalk, a new TJ Hughes department store has replaced the BHS anchor store and a new Pure Gym has been trading very strongly.

The latest name to join this growing list of local and national retail and leisure occupiers is The Bakery on Harefield Road, offering artisan breads, cakes and pastries. Coming in October will be Tiny Town, a new venue for parents and young children to spend some fun time in the town centre at this new role play café, created by the company behind Funtastic which already operates a soft play centre in Freer Street.

It all adds up to a very positive vibe right now in Nuneaton which was much enjoyed by visitors when the town was chosen to host the fourth stage of the 2018 OVO Energy Tour of Britain on September 5th.

For those interested in joining the resurgence of the retail and leisure industry in Nuneaton town centre, a number of retail units are available - as is free and confidential business support from the Coventry and Warwickshire Growth Hub and its partner organisations. This can include help with finding a unit, rent or rate relief, marketing and advice.

Midlands Engine offer showcased at InnoTrans 2018

The burgeoning rail sector in Coventry & Warwickshire is in the global spotlight this week at InnoTrans2018, the world’s leading trade fair for rail and mass transit technology.

The twelfth bi-annual InnoTrans is taking place in Berlin and the Midlands Engine and Northern Powerhouse are exhibiting jointly to promote UK rail investment opportunities - and specifically the North and Midlands as the best location to set up in the country.

Many high-level delegates will be in attendance. In 2016 the event saw 2,955 exhibitors from 60 countries. These attracted 137,391 trade visitors from 119 countries, with exhibitions from the five trade fair segments; Railway Technology, Railway Infrastructure, Public Transport, Interiors and Tunnel Construction.

The InnoTrans Convention, the event’s top-level supporting programme, complements the trade fair.

The Midlands Engine and Northern Powerhouse team is looking to meet potential overseas investors who want to find out more about opportunities in the UK rail industry, which is the most buoyant and fastest growing in Europe. Given their location and strong rail cluster, the Midlands and North is a talent-rich area with thousands of graduates from a range of universities, rail test facilities and engineering centres of excellence.

The area is a core part of the UK’s £7bn rail manufacturing industry. The regions are at the heart of new UK rail projects including the £55bn HS2 rail network, mainline electrification, station redevelopments and extensions to light railway networks, along with the expansion of rail freight infrastructure.

Overall the UK is investing more than £200 billion in rail projects across the country in the coming years. This makes the UK an attractive place to locate for overseas companies active in rail - and the Coventry & Warwickshire region is as attractive as any.

Warwickshire County Council, on behalf of Coventry & Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership area, has been co-ordinating the Midlands Engine activities for their presence as InnoTrans2018.

"Warwickshire and Coventry has a diverse and buoyant rail supply chain, including companies also active in auto and aero sectors,"said Warwickshire County Council head of Transport and Economy Mark Ryder. "The region also some key R&D assets such as the Quinton Rail Technology Centre and the Light Rail Team at Warwick Manufacturing Group.

"The UK Government is investing heavily in new rail and mass transit systems and the Midlands has the skills and development sites to attract new rail supply chain companies looking to establish as base in the UK."

Degree Apprenticeship Centre will hone engineering excellence

A new Degree Apprenticeship Centre focusing on engineering is to be built at the University of Warwick after receiving government funding.

The Warwick Manufacturing Group Degree Apprenticeship Centre will deliver courses essential to the effective development of advanced engineering and manufacturing companies.

The Centre, due to open in 2019, is being funded by £10 million from the Government’s Local Growth Fund through the Coventry and Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership (CWLEP).

The WMG Degree Apprenticeship Centre will provide training programmes up to Level 7 (Master’s Degree level) with an initial capacity for 500 students, scaling to 1,000 students on roll at any one time. The apprentices, who will be employed by companies throughout Coventry and Warwickshire, will undertake their academic studies at the Centre, which will be on the university campus.

Work will start this year on building the WMG Degree Apprenticeship Centre which will provide flexible teaching and lab space and an environment for technology-enhanced learning as well as advice and support for apprentices and organisations.

The WMG Degree Apprenticeship Centre will be the first part of a future Degree Apprenticeship complex on the Warwick campus, designed to train students in a range of Degree Apprenticeships

Professor Lord Bhattacharyya, Chairman of WMG, said: “Building on nearly four decades track record of developing and delivering pioneering education programmes, our new Degree Apprenticeship Centre will provide a variety of routes to achieve degree level apprenticeships.

"Young people are our future and we need to provide them with as many opportunities as possible to support our manufacturing base. The Centre will give opportunities for school leavers and apprentices who are looking to progress from Level 4 and 5 qualifications to degree level.”

Jonathan Browning, chair of the CWLEP, said the WMG Degree Apprenticeship Centre will create a dedicated space designed to support a new range of degrees.

He said: “The WMG Degree Apprenticeship Centre represents a significant investment in the delivery of higher-level skills to businesses and will focus on the High Value Manufacturing sector in Coventry and Warwickshire as well as meeting the needs of industry and the Government’s skills and industrial strategies.

“Equipping businesses with the skilled workforces they need for the future is vital to our economy and this new Centre will support businesses particularly in the manufacturing sector throughout Coventry and Warwickshire.”

Cycling culture helps to keep Apteco's workforce healthy and productive

Warwick-based software developer Apteco has been named as Warwickshire’s most cycle-friendly business.

Apteco gained the accolade after entering a search to find companies who encourage a cycling culture throughout the workforce.

The business, which specialises in marketing data analysis and automation solutions, fosters an active environment. Apteco’s team make daily use of a purpose-built brick bike shed, complete with cycle hangers, and a dedicated locker room fitted with storage and showers.

Their in-house bike-to-work scheme has been organised in partnership with Leamington bike shop John Atkins Cycles. The scheme is managed internally and has been running since 2009, encouraging employees to get in the saddle for their daily commute.

They also have strong links with local clubs such as Warwickshire Amateur Cycling Club, Warwick Lanterne Rouge Cycling Club, and Royal Leamington Spa Cycling Club, taking part in regular charity rides and events.

After fending off other contenders for the top prize, their commendable efforts saw them rewarded with special VIP access to the finish of the Warwickshire stage of the OVO Energy Tour of Britain.

Matthew Maltby, IT Manager at Apteco, is the leader of the cycling pack in the office and he spoke about seeing Andre Greipel take the Stage 4 crown in Leamington.

“Though it was all a blur when the cyclists arrived at the finish, we got some great views of the competition as it came into Leamington. I loved it,” said Matthew. “Our colleagues back at the office also caught a glimpse of the action – the route took cyclists right past the front door of our office.

“We’re very lucky because the Women’s Tour also comes through here, so we’re always out on the street showing our support for that.”

He spoke about some of the other things they get up to throughout the year: “Privately, we have our own Strava Cycling Club for a bit of internal, friendly competition.

“Once a week throughout the summer, there is a bike ride after work for employees and their friends and family. We even have an annual road ride where a customer comes to join some of the team after work for a road ride with a beer stop along the way.”

Matthew added that the team are always looking to get involved in sporting events and not just cycling - technology director Robert Downs is a top-100 finisher of the Virgin London Marathon.

“We have great links with the local community. With everything we have going on, it’s a pretty full on schedule,” he said. “Our employees regularly mention how much more alert and fresher they are whenever they start cycling to work, and it eases the frustration of sitting in traffic. We now have 22 out of 42 employees who cycle one way or another, whether that’s commuting or recreational.”

With people often discouraged by a lack of facilities to cycle long-distance to work, Matthew suggested that it’s a worthwhile project for companies to undertake,

“I know other businesses would like to get involved but a lot of the time either the infrastructure simply isn’t there, or people don’t feel comfortable in making use of them," he said. “It can be a big workout if you have a long way to travel, so showers and changing rooms can alleviate some of those problems.

“I think if other businesses thought about putting good facilities in place for their employees to use, or improving the ones they have, then more people might consider cycling to work. It’s easier when a lot of your colleagues do the same thing.”

Warwickshire’s gaming industry earmarked by government for foreign investment

Warwickshire’s booming gaming sector, dubbed ‘Silicon Spa’, has been selected as a potential recipient for global investment as announced by International Trade Secretary and President of the Board of Trade Dr Liam Fox MP.

Silicon Spa will be promoted as part of the government’s High Potential Opportunity (HPO) scheme. HPO was developed by the Department for International Trade (DIT) to attract international investment to parts of the UK economy where there are clear commercial opportunities that may have previously been overlooked. The project focuses on growing industries that may benefit from additional investment.

Given the strong creative cluster of businesses within the Silicon Spa area the HPO scheme presents the opportunity to give the region the international profile it deserves.

In April this year Digital Creative Lead Stacy O’ Connor, from the Coventry and Warwickshire LEP, and Inward Investment Officer Sim Lee, from Warwickshire County Council, submitted an application detailing the commercial opportunities for potential investors that could support and strengthen the existing digital creative ecosystem in the region. The application later passed the two-stage process; one of only a handful of successful submissions in the country.

The next step is for the team to work closely with DIT to develop a focused proposition for Warwickshire’s digital creative sector to help promote it to international markets. The team hopes that projects such as the ‘Leamington Creative Quarter’ - a scheme to regenerate the Old Town of Leamington Spa - will provide the perfect location for future investment giving companies access to the area’s diverse talent and digital supply chain.

Warwickshire County Council’s Economy & Skills Group Manager David Ayton-Hill said:

“This is a really fantastic proposition for Silicon Spa and a brilliant opportunity to boost a vibrant part of the Warwickshire economy.

Over recent years the local gaming industry has gone from strength to strength and is more than capable of holding its own on the world stage. We’re really keen for the HPO to be the next exciting chapter in the growth of this dynamic industry.”

Communications skills are key to success in business

"Employers value staff who excel at communication - learning to speak publicly is a great way of mastering this key skill."

When it comes to running a successful business, communication skills are essential.

A survey carried about by LinkedIn revealed communication as the most in-demand ‘soft skill’ (personal attributes that allow an individual to interact with other people) among potential employees. Successful entrepreneurs such as Richard Branson and Warren Buffett credit communication as vital in their own success, Branson in particular has emphasised the importance of being a storyteller when promoting a businesses.

How can one hope to develop this skill? Warren Buffett says learning to speak publicly was a revelation, indeed the only diploma Buffett displays in his office is from a public speaking course:

“I was terrified of public speaking in high school and college. I couldn’t do it,” Buffett once told the BBC. “I don’t have my diploma from college or from graduate school, but I have my Dale Carnegie [training provider] diploma there because it changed my life.”

Public speaking develops communication skills as an individual must interact with an audience in an engaging, clear and concise way. Crucially it also develops the confidence that is characteristic of industry leaders.

As with any skill public speaking becomes easier with practice but opportunities to do so at work aren’t always forthcoming, while practising outside your job can frequently mean addressing a room full of empty chairs.

For those looking to develop their public speaking joining a group offers a platform to develop this key skill outside work, to a receptive and supportive audience. In Warwickshire it is exactly this environment offered by Leamington Spa-based Spa Speakers.

Part of the Toastmasters International network of public speaking groups, Spa Speakers is Warwickshire’s only (at time of writing) officially sanctioned Toastmasters group. Its mission is to help individuals overcome their fear of public speaking by encouraging them to deliver speeches at their regular meetings.

With over 50 members, making it one of the biggest groups in its area, it is one of a number of clubs in the midlands, with Coventry-based Godiva Speakers and Solihull’s Heart of England Club closest neighbours. Many business people join to help them with their career development.

Spa Speakers divide their bi-weekly meetings into two halves, with the first half dedicated to pre-prepared speeches: upon joining each member is enrolled on a structured educational programme comprising a number of speeches which they must deliver using criteria dictated by the programme.

‘Table Topics’ dominates the second half of meetings, during which members must get up and think on their feet by presenting a short impromptu speech on an assigned topic. The challenge forces members to perform under pressure, without the luxury of preparation.

Learning and developing is key to meetings: those who deliver speeches are evaluated and provided with feedback from fellow members, identifying areas for improvement. Members are also invited to help run meetings by taking on one of a number of roles such as timekeeper, grammarian, sergeant-at-arms and ‘ah-counter’, who keeps tabs on verbal crutches; symptomatic of the less experienced public speaker. In doing so members can develop other skills such as: time management, organisation and listening.

So why should Warwickshire businesses care? Recently-elected club president Joy Kurian explains why organisations should encourage their employees to join a club like Spa Speakers:

“Given the abundance of information nowadays, getting across a clear and concise message has never been more important. Here at Spa Speakers we offer members a supportive environment in which they can develop a range of key skills and communication is chief among these.

Each speech requires careful preparation and consideration of the subject matter. The feedback received afterwards is vital for highlighting areas for commendation, as well as areas for improvement.”

Spa Speakers meets regularly at the Helen Ley Centre in Leamington Spa every other week. Guests are able to attend a couple of meetings for free in order to see whether it’s for them. More information (including how to join) is available via the Spa Speakers website: www.spaspeakers.co.uk.
