Start-up Support powers Beyond the Bump
"We realised there was so much we didn’t know about actually running a business and Saffron has helped us to have confidence in our ideas.”
When Warwickshire mum Melissa Schmidt decided to launch a business to improve the experience of pregnancy, birth and parenthood for other families in the region, little did she know that Vicky Morgan, who lived just a few miles away, was planning to do the same.
Both Melissa, who lives in Moreton Morrell, and Vicky, who lives in Heathcote, had given birth to their first children in the spring of 2020 but neither had the ‘best experience.’ And despite not knowing each other at the time, both of them saw a gap in the market for a business to support families across the area in everything from antenatal classes through post-birth bonding.
“I knew that there was a better way of doing things and was thinking about how it might work as a business,” said Melissa. “Then I saw a post from Vicky on Facebook pretty much describing everything I was thinking and that she was looking for a name for the business! I thought: ‘that’s my idea!’ I got in touch and we decided to go for a coffee to see if there was a way we could work together.”
Fast forward three hours and they were launching a new business – Beyond the Bump – together and jump to today and they have already supported hundreds of families in the area, and both have another two children of their own!
And now, after receiving support from Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce business adviser Saffron Medway, they have just taken on their first premises in Market Place, Warwick, to deliver their services and classes.
Saffron’s support came through the Business Start-Up Support programme delivered by the Chamber of Commerce, on behalf of Warwickshire County Council, via Business Growth Warwickshire. The programmes are funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and Warwickshire County Council.
Melissa said: “There were so many coincidences leading up to setting up the business and they have continued, including the timings of the birth of our second and third children! The first coincidence was our experience leading up to, during and after the birth of our first children. We both thought there was a better way and had the idea for a business.
“When we launched, we would deliver classes in community centres and sports halls, and we could see that there was a real market for what we were doing. We could see that there was potential to grow and to reach more people. Working with Saffron, we refined what we were doing from a marketing point of view and looked at how we could do things in a much more efficient way.
“She has just been a brilliant support – we realised there was so much we didn’t know about actually running a business and Saffron has helped us to have confidence in our ideas.”
As well as growing into its own centre and expanding its range of support, Beyond the Bump is now able to reach more people after becoming a community interest company which is seeing referrals from the NHS and other bodies.
Saffron said: “From the moment I met Melissa and Vicky, it was clear they had ambitious plans for their business. Together, we turned those ideas into actionable strategies. I supported them through staffing challenges, developed social media marketing concepts, and helped shape a clear growth plan. Since then, they’ve relocated to a larger, more suitable premises and are thriving, evidence of the solid foundations we built together.
“Remarkably, both Melissa and Vicky welcomed new babies during our time working together, yet their drive and determination never wavered. Their commitment to their business has been truly inspiring.”
Councillor Howard, Portfolio Holder for Economy at Warwickshire County Council, said: “The Business Start Up programme provides dedicated support for our new local businesses. This support has helped Melissa and Vicky to develop and set out their growth plan and strategy for Beyond the Bump, helping them overcome challenges and grow their business including securing their first premises where they will continue to deliver their services and classes.”
Councillor Ella Billiald, Portfolio Holder for Arts, Culture and Economy at Warwick District Council, commented: “The District Council is pleased to lend its support to Beyond the Bump and other fledgling businesses in our area through this excellent start-up programme. We are delighted to see the positive impact it is having and would encourage similar organisations to get in touch with the Chamber to find out about the specialist help that is available to them.”
The Warwickshire Start-Up Business Support programme is funded by UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and Warwickshire County Council. Responsibility for the planning and delivery of UKSPF was part of the Level 2 Devolution Deal secured by Warwickshire County Council in 2024. Fair Chance recruit a great fit at care home
“We have had a very positive and successful working relationship with Fair Chance and would be delighted to work with them again. The candidate they sourced was an excellent fit for our team and has integrated extremely well.”
Beddoe Court Nursing Home provides expert, compassionate care for adults with complex mental health needs in the heart of Leamington Spa, and have recently become a Fair Chance Employer, embracing inclusive recruitment practices for their future roles.
They were looking to recruit for a housekeeping position within the home. At a meeting with Kim Hughes, a Business Skills Advisor for Connect To Work, it transpired that she knew someone who would be fit the role perfectly.
Kim was introduced to Joaquin through his Journey Guide, Jo Brown, to discuss his employment goals and how he could be supported to connect with local employers. With previous experience working as a cleaner in his home country of Costa Rica, Kim arranged for him to attend an informal interview followed by a successful work trial at the home. His positive attitude and strong work ethic impressed the team so much that they offered him the role immediately.
Kyle Beddoe, Care Home manager told us “We have had a very positive and successful working relationship with Fair Chance and would be delighted to work with them again. The candidate they sourced was an excellent fit for our team and has integrated extremely well.”
But the story doesn’t end there—Beddoe Court has even bigger plans for Joaquin. For their new home opening in 2027, they want to train him to become a Support Worker, creating a clear pathway for career progression.

Food & Drink Network gathers at Fat Bobs
“It’s great to find a space where producers, venues and suppliers can talk so openly. These meetings help us find opportunities, find out what’s coming down the line and where we can support each other.”
Food, drink and hospitality businesses from across Coventry and Warwickshire came together this month for the latest CW Food & Drink Network meeting - a regular opportunity for the sector to connect, collaborate and share insights.
The event was hosted by the newly opened Fat Bobs at
The Blue Lias in Long Itchington. Shelly and Mark Clarke, owners of Fat Bobs - the well‑known producer of handmade custom vehicle rugs - took over the iconic canalside pub in late 2025 following the retirement of the previous owners.
Over an intense two‑month period, they have worked with a network of local entrepreneurs, makers and engineers to remodel the site into a striking, family‑friendly destination themed around transport and machinery.
The reinvented venue now offers:
- Fat Bobs Emporium – showcasing a curated collection of cars, bikes and machinery with the displays changed on a rolling basis. For any owners who wish to display their machines Shelly and Mark would love to hear from you.
- The Pitstop Café – opening on 1st Feb – serving coffee, cake and relaxed café dining
- A refreshed Blue Lias Pub – offering traditional meals including a popular Sunday Roast in wonderful cosy indoor setting as well as outdoor and canalside dining.
- Outdoor attractions – including a fishing lake, camping and an events field for regular car meets, events and celebrations.
Shelly and Mark say the response since opening has exceeded all expectations.
“We’ve been overwhelmed by the support. The number of visitors, the enthusiasm from local clubs, and the kindness of the community has been incredible,” said Shelly.
“We love seeing enthusiasts bring their cars, bikes and machines into the emporium — but more than anything, we want people to feel welcome here,” added Mark. “This is such a beautiful spot by the canal, and our aim is to make it a place families and enthusiasts can all enjoy.”
This month’s CW Food & Drink Network meeting included a series of timely presentations and updates. Speakers covered:
Gary Dacosta from Farmfest, presented on the scale and ambition of this new show, describing it as “a major new platform to spotlight the nation’s farmers, producers and rural businesses.” The event is set to feature high‑profile names including Jeremy Clarkson, Adam Henson and live music from Groove Armada, 10cc and Sophie Ellis‑Bextor. The session concluded with a round robin of speed introductions where attendees gave shout outs for their business along with one opportunity or challenge. This activity uncovered interesting discussions and was followed by enthusiastic conversations and networking.
Reflecting on the value of the network, one business owner commented:
“It’s great to find a space where producers, venues and suppliers can talk so openly. These meetings help us find opportunities, find out what’s coming down the line and where we can support each other.”
The next Network meeting will take place in Coventry on 22 April 2026 (venue TBC).
Nuneaton bakery is growing and recruiting

There is so much behind running a business from finance to marketing and it was great to get help on all of that."
A home-based Nuneaton bakery business is has experienced rapid growth after receiving support.
Wild Breads Bakery was established by Siyana and Alex Yanarov from their Camp Hill home and has gone from baking breads for friends to producing up to 350 loaves a week which are sold to a range of customers including individuals and businesses, as well as at local markets.
Such has been the success of the bakery, the couple have invested in creating a separate micro-bakery building in their garden to stop the business taking over their house, where Siyana home-educates their children.
The sourdough breads – as well as a host of other products that have been added to the range – are made with a variety of natural ingredients, including items such as elderflower and blackberries that they forage for locally. The growth, which has also seen the company pick up a string of awards, will see the business take on new members of staff in 2026 in order to meet the strong demand for its baked items, which also include cookies and banana breads.
Wild Breads Bakery has been supported by the Warwickshire Start-Up Business Support programme, which is delivered by Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce, on behalf of Warwickshire County Council, via Business Growth Warwickshire. The programmes are funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and Warwickshire County Council.
The business received one-to-one help from Chamber business adviser Cathy Homer, who has vast experience within the food and drink industry. Cathy helped with everything from registering the home kitchen through to Siyana achieving her Level 2 Food Hygiene Certificate. On top of that, Cathy advised on a range of topics such as financial record-keeping, managing start-up costs, and issuing professional customer invoices. The support also included help with branding and storytelling, with Siyana attending marketing and social media workshops.
Siyana said: “I started baking bread for my family because I just wasn’t happy with what was on the market. I wanted real bread, without additives or chemicals and there was nothing available. After that, I started to get requests from friends, and it just took off from there and we decided to launch the business. I home educate my children and I wanted something that would allow me to continue to do that so having a home bakery was ideal.
“When we launched, we were so overwhelmed with orders that we had to carry some over to the next weekend. Then we bought a second oven and then we decided we needed to invest in a dedicated building and oven in the garden, because demand was so high. We are really pleased that we can use locally sourced, foraged products and that we can highlight the benefits of eating such natural foods. It is something that is important to us and played a part in the name of the business.
“We wouldn’t be where we are today with the business without the help of Cathy and the Chamber of Commerce. She understood straight away what we were trying to achieve and gave such great advice. There is so much behind running a business from finance to marketing and it was great to get help on all of that.
“But Cathy also helped us to know how to set boundaries and remember the reason for starting the business in the first place. We’re excited for the next 12 months and what is has to offer.”
Cathy added: “I am really pleased to see the progress that Wild Breads Bakery has made in such a short space of time.
“The demand for the products was there from the outset and, through our support, we could help to ensure that Siyana and Alex got some of the fundamentals right in order to make sure the success worked for them, not only as a business but also as a family.”
Wild Breads Bakery are also part of the Coventry and Warwickshire Food & Drink Producers Network. Together the network celebrates the hospitality sector through the creation of local peer collaboration, industry events and business support. Councillor Rob Howard, Portfolio Holder for Economy at Warwickshire County Council, said: “The Business Start-Up programme is dedicated to supporting new businesses to fill the knowledge gap, helping them towards a successful start. The programme supported Siyana and Alex to set up their new business, scaling up from baking in their kitchen to creating dedicated premises in their garden. They received guidance through the process of registering the business, ensuring they have processes in place to run an efficient business and opportunities to develop their marketing skills to help grow their customer base.”
Councillor Nicky King, Portfolio Holder for Business and Regeneration at Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council, said: “I am delighted that Siyana and Alex Yanarov of Wild Breads Bakery, were able to access business support provided by Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce, on behalf of Warwickshire County Council, via Business Growth Warwickshire. Their expertise combined with our commitment to fostering local economic growth provides a foundation for supporting our entrepreneurs. I hope that the support available will help even more local businesses to flourish.”

Putting businesses at the heart of skills
"It’s vital that we continue to listen to what employers need but, also, to give them a voice in what solutions would work best for them and their staff.”
Businesses across Warwickshire have the opportunity to help devise solutions to the skills shortages that are affecting different industries in the region through the second phase of the Local Skills Improvement Plan (LSIP). The Government has written LSIPs into law as a way of ensuring that training providers listen to, understand and deliver on the needs of local employers.
In Warwickshire, the LSIP is being developed in partnership with Warwickshire County Council through the Warwickshire Skills Hub and is being delivered by Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce, with support from Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce.
The latest phase of the LSIP is building on the early success of the initiative which has helped Warwickshire to meet current and future skills needs in the region over the past two years by producing key priorities and actions for those responsible for training and education.
That includes the UK Government, Skills England, Warwickshire County Council, district and borough councils, colleges, independent training providers, adult education services, universities, chambers and other regional stakeholders.
On the back of the success of the first phase, an even greater emphasis will now be given to devising solutions and will include a series of workshops with businesses to look at issues affecting different sectors of the economy. Those workshops will cover Digital & Creative; Defence/Automotive/Cyber; Advanced Manufacturing; Transport & Logistics; Rural Economy; Tourism & Hospitality; Construction; and Health and will be taking place from February.
Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber is now recruiting three additional members of staff to help co-ordinate the workshops and develop the overall plan, which also includes online surveys, face-to-face meetings and telephone calls.
Corin Crane, Chief Executive of the Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce, said: “We are thrilled to be continuing the great work that has begun over the past couple of years with the Local Skills Improvement Plan. The brilliant news is that LSIPs are here to stay now that they have been written into statute.
“Businesses in the region know the skills they need and by putting their voices at the centre of the conversation, training and skills provision can be designed to meet those requirements and develop the workforce for today and the future. Crucially, our next round of engagement includes looking at solutions as well as the issues because we really want to start moving the dial on developing the skills our employers need.”
Fay Winterburn, Head of Employability and Skills at the Warwickshire Skills Hub, added: “There is a huge amount of work being undertaken in the county to improve skills which brings benefits to individuals and to employers. We’re pleased to be working with the Chamber on our LSIP and it’s vital that we continue to listen to what employers need but, also, to give them a voice in what solutions would work best for them and their staff.”
Details of the first workshops are:
Leadership Development – February 3 at Ashorne Hill
Digital Skills, AI, Adoption of New Technologies – February 10 at Warwick Racecourse
Workforce of the Future – February 11 at Weston Hall Hotel

Corporate volunteering at Country Parks
“This is the second time our team have spent a day at Ryton Pools, and we have very much appreciated the opportunity. We’ve particularly enjoyed how welcome and involved we’ve felt.”
Businesses looking to boost team spirit and morale through a rewarding away day are encouraged to take part in corporate volunteering at Warwickshire Country Parks.
From habitat management and conservation tasks to practical maintenance projects, corporate volunteering supports the ongoing care of Warwickshire’s much-loved green spaces. Activities take place at all of the five country parks and are adapted to the group size and location.
Corporate volunteering days are carefully planned and led by experienced rangers, ensuring teams can get stuck in safely while contributing to meaningful work that benefits wildlife and park visitors.
For businesses, the benefits go beyond corporate social responsibility. Volunteering days provide an opportunity for staff to step away from the workplace, build stronger relationships, and learn new skills in a relaxed, outdoor setting. Many organisations also find it supports wellbeing and pride in helping their local community.
Feedback from some of recent groups who volunteered at Warwickshire’s country parks includes:
“I really enjoyed it, and it was actually great being out in the fresh air for the day.”
“Thanks to Tom, Lee and the rangers for hosting us, guiding us and providing tea!”
“This is the second time our team have spent a day at Ryton Pools, and we have very much appreciated the opportunity. We’ve particularly enjoyed how welcome and involved we’ve felt.”

Turning a passion into a buoyant business
“Louise created a business from a passion which has allowed her to share her love for open water swimming and through the dedicated business support and guidance from Project Warwickshire she has been able to sustain and grow her business for the future.”
The rise in open water swimming has led a Warwickshire woman to make a splash with a successful venture.
And now Louise Powell, who runs Together We Swim, is looking to grow the business in 2026 after giving up her day job as an occupational therapist and receiving support through the Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce.
Louise began open water swimming as a hobby and once she felt the benefits to her own health and wellbeing, she was hooked. That passion grew and she trained to become an open water swimming coach and launched Together We Swim, offering group introductory sessions once a month. Louise has gone on to support more than 250 people to start open water swimming in the idyllic setting of Burton Farm Café in Burton Hastings.
The business is now opening up additional courses and is developing a strong community of swimmers who stay in touch and swim together long after they have completed their lessons.
The fully funded support through the Chamber was part of the Project Warwickshire programme which saw Louise receive one-to-one help from adviser Russell Grant, who has helped build her knowledge of business and encouraged her to find recurring revenue streams.
Project Warwickshire forms part of Warwickshire County Councils Business Growth Warwickshire Business Support programme. The Project Warwickshire strand is delivered by Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce on behalf of Warwickshire County Council. It is funded by UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and Warwickshire County Council.
Louise said: “I was looking for a hobby a few years ago. I wanted something inclusive where it didn’t matter how you looked and could just be yourself. I discovered open water swimming and absolutely loved it. I was approaching 50 and was starting to think about retirement plans and was looking at potentially starting a business.
“I decided to combine the two and trained to be an open water swimming coach and as it’s becoming more and more popular, I am getting more enquiries. The physical and mental wellbeing benefits are huge, especially when you swim somewhere like Burton Farm where it is natural spring water and surrounded by trees and nature. I’ve been running the business at the same time as working as an occupational therapist within social care. I’ve now given up the day job and will carry on being an occupational therapist privately but the extra time gives me an opportunity to grow the business.
“I met Russell at a networking event and he got in touch after that and I’ve loved every minute of the support he’s been able to give. He’s helped me with new ideas and he’s given me lots of practical tips too to help me run the business. I’ll be honest, I was pretty clueless when it came to business before this and he’s made it really easy for me to ask questions and not feel silly for not knowing the answer. One of the big things he’s urged me to look at is finding repeat revenues and that’s something I am going to be working hard on in 2026 now I have more time to focus on the business.”
Russell said: “Open water swimming is incredibly popular but it is important that people understand what they are doing and get some form of lessons beforehand – and that’s why Together We Swim is proving to be such a success. Louise has pulled together her experience as an occupational therapist and her love for open water swimming and created a great business. We’ve had some great meetings and she has put into practice everything we’ve discussed, ready to make an even bigger splash in 2026.”
Councillor Rob Howard, Portfolio Holder for Economy at Warwickshire County Council, said: “Project Warwickshire supports small businesses in the hospitality, leisure and tourism sector, such as Louise’s. The support provided is fully funded and can help to bring in additional business knowledge and support to Warwickshire’s small businesses.

Rural Enterprise Hub builds momentum
The Rural Enterprise Hub (REH) has made a strong start following its expansion into South Warwickshire, building connections and supporting rural businesses during its first three months of activity.
Since expanding into the area, the REH has focused on raising awareness of free, fully funded business support by actively engaging with local networks, business groups and rural organisations. Activities have included participating in The Neighbourhood Networking at Stoneleigh, Farming Health events, Business Buzz, Talk Business, and LAMMA 2026 at the NEC, alongside regular involvement with local business clubs in Southam, Alcester, Studley and Henley-in-Arden.
The Hub has strengthened key partnerships with The Neighbourhood Network, the Warwickshire Rural Hub, Southam Business Community CIC, Shipston-on-Stour Business Group and Shipston Town Council.
The REH is also working closely with the Coventry & Warwickshire Growth Hub, Warwickshire Skills Hub, and Coventry & Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce to provide joined-up business support across the region.
Direct business engagement has been a priority, with successful drop-in sessions held in November and January. Further drop-ins are planned at Minerva Mill and Shipston-on-Stour Council Offices, with opportunities in Southam currently being explored to widen access to local business support.
Looking ahead, the REH has a busy programme planned for February and March. This includes presentations to Southam Business Community CIC and The Neighbourhood Network, attendance at events such as the Stratford Business Conference, Alcester Business Club, Studley in Business, RABI Breakfasts, Bidford Networking and Farming Health events, as well as hosting further REH drop-in sessions. This also includes attending the Stratford High Street Roadshow at Stratford Town Hall and Inclusive Employment activity through the Warwickshire Skills Hub.
Three months in, the Rural Enterprise Hub is firmly embedded within South Warwickshire, providing accessible, place-based support and building strong foundations for continued rural business growth.

Fitness studio adds weight on to client base
“The support from programmes such as Project Warwickshire is there to help small businesses grow and thrive by providing additional business-based knowledge to create lasting local businesses within Warwickshire.”
A fitness studio in Kenilworth has more than doubled its client base after working with an adviser who helped to get the business into shape!
CrossFit Time Keeper was established by Jack Hill and Steve Turbit three years ago when Jack decided to quit his job as a teacher and start a business, building on his background in sports science and martial arts. The business moved to its own training hub in Farmer Ward Road, Kenilworth, and specialises in CrossFit methods of training which includes varied workouts to improve functional fitness and movement.
It had attracted a handful of members but its approach to marketing meant it was struggling to bring in a wider variety of customers. Jack enlisted the help of the Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce, through the fully funded Project Warwickshire Business Support Programme and worked with business adviser Marie Stephenson.
Project Warwickshire forms part of Warwickshire County Councils, Business Growth Warwickshire Business Support programme. The Project Warwickshire strand is delivered by Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce on behalf of Warwickshire County Council. It is funded by UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and Warwickshire County Council.
Through the support, Marie helped to give the business a sharper marketing focus by targeting specific demographics rather than adopting a scattergun approach, which led to an increase in women signing up as members. Jack also attended social media classes to help gain practical skills which he has put into practice at the same time as getting a better understanding of financial and business planning. Marie also encouraged him to look at other businesses in the same field to see if he could draw inspiration from them.
As a result of the support, membership has doubled with a near 50/50 split in genders compared to its male-dominated customer-base only a few months before. Now, CrossFit Time Keeper is ready to make the most of people’s desires to get fit in the New Year by signing up more clients and focus on retention by helping them become active for the long term too.
Jack said: “I decided it was time to leave the teaching profession and wanted to pursue my passion for fitness as a business. Steve and I had become good friends and we decided we would combine our knowledge and skills to launch our own gym. We had really good feedback from clients but we needed to grow, and the support from Marie was absolutely invaluable. It was like having our own personal trainer but on the business side!
“Where we help get people into shape physically, Marie coached us in marketing, finances and business planning and we saw results really quickly. It’s given us that extra confidence and knowledge to help us grow and we’re looking forward to 2026 with real positivity.”
Marie said: “I really enjoyed working with Jack because he was willing to take everything on board and it has been a real success. When he decided to widen the target audience for the business to include women, we changed the website to reflect this and encouraged more social media posts featuring women and their success stories.
“His membership doubled in just a few months and then grew even further. We worked really well together and I am so pleased to see them in good shape to expand again in 2026.”
Councillor Rob Howard, Portfolio Holder for Economy at Warwickshire County Council, said: “The dedicated support from Project Warwickshire has allowed Jack and Steve to build upon their fitness knowledge and create a targeted marketing plan to increase their membership over a short period of time. Project Warwickshire also supported Jack and Steve to identify and create a long-term approach to membership ensuring steady growth for the business.
“The support from programmes such as Project Warwickshire is there to help small businesses grow and thrive by providing additional business-based knowledge to create lasting local businesses within Warwickshire.”
Councillor Ella Billiald, Portfolio Holder for Arts, Culture and Economy at Warwick District Council commented: “The District Council is pleased to lend its support to CrossFit Time Keeper and other fledgling businesses in our district through this excellent support programme.
“We are delighted to see the positive impact it is having and would encourage similar organisations to get in touch with the Chamber to find out about the specialist help that is available to them.”

Local economy expected to grow in 2026
"Local sentiment around domestic sales for the services sector show growth."
Coventry and Warwickshire’s economy is expected to grow in 2026 according to a leading business survey.
Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce’s final Quarterly Economic Survey (QES) of 2025 showed that firms in the region felt the effects of an uncertain period around the time of the Autumn Budget and the fallout from the cyber-attack at JLR.
The survey, which is delivered in partnership with Prime Accountants Group and measures how business owners are feeling, is analysed by the Business Intelligence Service at Warwickshire County Council.
From the responses of businesses across the service and manufacturing sectors, it gives scores out of 100 where anything above 50 indicates growth and anything below 50 is negative. It looks at a range of aspects of doing business in the region, including the outlook for employment, investment, confidence, and current and future order books for both domestic and overseas sales.
In the vast majority of indicators, there was a drop compared to the previous quarter but, crucially, overall confidence remained above 50 while the overall economic outlook had a score of 56.2.
Todd Williams, business intelligence analyst (economy and skills) at Warwickshire County Council, said: “Quarter four at a national level rose modestly primarily due to an increase in services output, alongside an uptick in domestic orders for the manufacturing sector. Nevertheless, overall demand is reported to be weakening both domestically and abroad. Global and domestic economic uncertainty were blamed for steepening job losses. Meanwhile, the latest QES results shows a different picture for the local economy. Local sentiment around domestic sales for the services sector show growth.
“Meanwhile, other sales areas are all in contraction with overseas sales for the manufacturing sector showing significant weakness. Overall investment showed continued weakness, alongside cashflow for the services sector. Potentially related to the JLR shutdown, cashflow for the local manufacturing sector retracted sharply in Q4 from a very strong Q3.
“Local concerns around labour costs remain significant for both the services and manufacturing sectors, with the manufacturing sector also being very concerned about raw material costs and utilities. Local recruitment efforts have fallen, with reduced difficulties recruiting. The vast majority of local manufacturing sector respondents indicate that they are currently operating below full capacity.
“The results show that the overall economic outlook index for Coventry and Warwickshire exceeding the national trend in many ways. Nevertheless, very weak local sentiments around both manufacturing and exports are a significant concern.”
Corin Crane, Chief Executive of Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce, said: “The survey backs up everything we heard anecdotally at the end of 2025 that firms had been through a difficult and uncertain period. So many businesses were nervous about the Budget and the manufacturing sector had been hit by the JLR attack. However, what we started to see after the Budget was confidence starting to return and lots of things that had been put on hold were starting to move forward.
“The first few months of 2026 will provide an important indication of what is to come throughout the year. So, while there will be concern around this survey we have to take it in the context of the period it was carried out.”
Steve Harcourt, Director of Prime Accountants Group, added: “This is yet another fascinating survey that shows exactly how businesses across Coventry and Warwickshire were feeling as the end of the year approached. I know from my own client base that there was a huge amount of uncertainty but the last few weeks of 2025 felt much more stable and we are all hoping that this year begins on much more solid foundations from which companies across the region can grow.”

Partnership delivers new homes in Nuneaton
A development partnership has been announced to deliver 20 new homes on a former school site in Hartshill.
Warwickshire Property & Development Group (WPDG) will be partnering with Seddon Housing Partnerships on a second residential scheme in Nuneaton.
The new homes will be built on brownfield land adjacent to Hartshill Health Centre and opposite Hartshill Academy on Church Road, with the land previously utilised as an annex to the school. Outline planning consent was granted for the residential development at the site when the full planning application was approved for the medical centre in 2020.
WPDG has signed a Section 106 agreement to unlock the next stage of delivery for the scheme that will be a mix of two, three and four bedroom homes – with the development also sharing road access with Hartshill Health Centre.
Seddon, one of the UK’s largest private owned and family managed contracting businesses, has been appointed as development partner following a formal tender process.
WPDG and Seddon will be working in partnership to prepare a Reserved Matters planning application to submit to North Warwickshire Borough Council in the coming months to enable construction work to begin on site. The Church Road scheme strengthens the relationship between WPDG and Seddon, with the partnership also due to deliver 54 new homes on the site of the former Manor Park School in Nuneaton.
WPDG was established by Warwickshire County Council to realise the potential of its development sites, commercial buildings and mineral rights in the most sustainable way possible.
Chris John, Assistant Development Manager at Warwickshire Property & Development Group, said: “We’re pleased to be working in partnership with Seddon to regenerate a brownfield site into a new community in Hartshill. We have an existing working relationship with Seddon already from our scheme at Manor Park School and we will be collaborating with their team to bring forward a planning application to unlock the new homes. This latest development is another example of how we are working to revitalise public land back into use to meet local housing needs.”
Tony Clark, Regional Director for Seddon Housing Partnerships, said: "We’re proud to be extending our partnership with WPDG on this second development, delivering 20 much-needed homes on a regenerated brownfield site. This scheme forms part of a wider vision for the area, which has already seen the successful delivery of a new medical centre."
Councillor Stephen Shaw, Deputy Leader of Warwickshire County Council and Portfolio Holder for Finance and Property, said: “We are delighted to continue our work with Seddon Housing and welcome them onboard as our partner on the Church Road development. Through this work the County Council will continue to realise its ambition to unlock the potential in local sites and make the most of the county’s assets for the benefit of our people and communities.”
GDP 'bounce-back' is welcomed
Business leaders in Coventry and Warwickshire have welcomed an economic ‘bounce back’ seen in the latest statistics.
GDP – the measure of output in the UK economy – grew by 0.3 per cent in November, which was stronger than expected. It also grew by 0.1 per cent in the three-month period to November.
Corin Crane, Chief Executive of Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce, said: “The latest growth figures are positive and it’s important for business morale to kick off the year with a set of better-than-expected numbers. There was real fear in advance of the Budget that the economy would slow but that hasn’t materialised and looks as though the resumption of production at JLR has also supported this bounce back.
“As well all know, the economy has been pretty flat for a number of years now and the latest figures show that there is still some way to go before we can start to feel like we are in a period of long-term, sustainable growth. I believe the next 12 months are vital for the government to implement its policies for growth, so it starts to have a real impact on businesses and the wider economy.”
Stuart Morrison, research manager at the British Chambers of Commerce, said: “Better than expected GDP data suggests the impact of pre-Budget jitters among businesses may have been less than predicted. Firms will welcome confirmation that the economy bounced back to growth of 0.3 per cent in November itself, with the more reliable three-month average showing more modest growth of 0.1 per cent.
“The reality of the Chancellor’s statement, when it came, was no significant new taxes for firms, but a lack of game changing measures to properly kickstart the economy. Firms are telling us they’re still cautious about investing and recruiting, meaning growth will stay limited for the foreseeable.
“Our latest economic forecast suggests a challenging year ahead for businesses, with a projected expansion in GDP of just 1.2 per cent. Businesses are ambitious to drive forward better growth, but they need help.
“2026 must be a year of delivery on growth, with government and business working in partnership. That means action from policymakers on igniting investment, powering productivity and transforming trade.”

Residential scheme at Warwickshire village
“Through these efforts, the County Council remains committed to unlocking the potential of local sites and maximising the county’s assets to deliver lasting benefits for our people and communities.”
A new partnership has been formed to deliver around 25 new homes in a Warwickshire village.
Warwickshire Property & Development Group (WPDG) has appointed Coventry-based Deeley Group, after a formal tender process, to bring forward the residential scheme at Mabels Farm in Ilmington.
Deeley Group will be working with WPDG to prepare a full planning application to submit to Stratford-on-Avon District Council, with early engagement already taking place with Ilmington Parish Council.
The proposed site has been allocated for homes in the Ilmington Neighbourhood Plan and will include a mix of house types and tenures, with the aim of providing homes for growing families and downsizers to stay in the area. The scheme will include 35 per cent affordable homes along with improved access to the village centre and adjacent play area.
The proposed site is currently occupied by an existing farmhouse and associated barns, with detailed planning permission granted in March 2024 which will see the buildings replaced, relocated and rebuilt at a new location within the Warwickshire County Council owned farm.
WPDG was established by Warwickshire County Council in 2021 to realise the potential of its development sites, commercial buildings and mineral rights.
Tony Bunney, Senior Development Manager of Warwickshire Property & Development Group, said: “This partnership is a major step forward in enabling us to bring forward important new homes for the local community. Our team has already been speaking to and engaging with the Parish Council and the local community to ensure the new homes will be a good fit for the village. We’re looking forward to working with Deeley Group to bring forward the plans and will benefit from their experience in delivering homes in villages.”
Eleanor Deeley, Joint Managing Director of Deeley Group, said: “As we enter our 90th year, this scheme builds on our proud history of delivering homes for communities across Warwickshire and the wider West Midlands. We’re pleased to have been appointed to work on this scheme with Warwickshire Property & Development Group and to bring through plans for high-quality homes that will blend in with the village’s character and meet local needs.”
Councillor Stephen Shaw, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Finance and Property at Warwickshire County Council, said: “We are delighted that Deeley Group will be partnering with WPDG on this proposed development in Ilmington. This scheme will benefit from their heritage and experience as a respected and well-established housebuilder. Through these efforts, the County Council remains committed to unlocking the potential of local sites and maximising the county’s assets to deliver lasting benefits for our people and communities.”
