WARWICKSHIRE MEANS BUSINESS

Sisters relishing BMW apprenticeships

“I am learning academically as well as solidifying my knowledge working in a manufacturing environment."

With National Apprenticeship Week focusing a spotlight on apprenticeships this month, Warwickshire sisters Libby and Annabel Chivers share how an apprenticeship has kicked started their careers.

Annabel, now in a full-time role at BMW Group Plant Hams Hall, started her apprenticeship just as she turned 16.

“After exploring various pathways after school, I discovered the option to earn while you learn," she said. "I started at BMW Group as a level 3 logistics technician and was given the opportunity to work in multiple logistics departments, introducing me to roles I had never even heard of! The apprenticeship allowed me to develop my problem-solving skills, working on real life issues instead of just classroom concepts. I also built a strong network both within Plant Hams Hall and the wider BMW Group that has proven useful as I moved into my full role.”

Seeing Annabel making the best of her apprenticeship, sister Libby followed.

“Originally when I left school, I started a Fine Arts course but realised it wasn’t for me," Libby said. "I had been to Plant Hams Hall for work experience and joined careers events there, so I decided to join an apprenticeship as a level 3 quality apprentice.

“I am learning academically as well as solidifying my knowledge working in a manufacturing environment. At college I am gaining a broad understanding, and working alongside people in the plant means I am accessing years of knowledge and experience from colleagues.”

Importantly, as young females it’s been a positive experience for Annabel and Libby.

“I would advise young females to avoid any preconceptions when thinking about a career in an engineering and manufacturing environment. My experience so far is a very warm welcome,” says Libby.

Annabel added: “It’s very different to the initial perceptions I had. Our plant is clean and modern, and a pleasant working environment for everyone. My advice is to just do it! It could be a life changing opportunity.”

BMW Group has seen an increasing number of young females successfully starting apprenticeships at its Hams Hall plant. Last year almost half of the apprentices joining technical training programmes were female. While applications for some schemes have closed for 2025, there are still Level 3 apprenticeships open.
