WARWICKSHIRE MEANS BUSINESS

Welcome

Welcome from Mark Ryder

Hello and welcome to the December edition of Warwickshire Means Business. On behalf of Warwickshire County Council, I extend festive greetings to all.

With Christmas just around the corner, our wonderful county, and all our towns and villages, are looking lovelier than ever. Please don’t overlook your local shops and small businesses when you are doing your Christmas shopping - exactly what you are looking for may well be just around the corner!

The year 2025 is almost over but the business support on offer from Warwickshire County Council and our partners continues apace, as it will through 2026 and beyond. Our enduring mission is to support ambitious, sustainable and inclusive growth across the whole of the county.

One of the great successes of the last year has been Warwickshire Business Energy Advice Service (BEAS). More than 250 businesses have benefited from the free BEAS audit which identifies ways in which a business can become more energy efficient and cost effective. Grants are also available, but the deadline for applications is drawing near so please, if you haven’t already, book your audit soon.

Also in this month’s WMB we hear how two small Rugby businesses are growing thanks to the Skills Escalator and Start-Up programmes respectively, and how a Warwick business has benefited from the support of the Warwickshire Manufacturing Growth Programme.

Local business support programmes are designed to support SMEs in every sector. A Bulkington hotel has enhanced its profile with advice from Project Warwickshire while a Nuneaton-based education-provider has received invaluable support from Coventry & Warwickshire Reinvestment Trust. All our articles contain relevant links so please do have a look and see if we can help you.

Our Special Feature tells the uplifting story of how two young people, recruited through the Fair Chance Employment Programme, have proved central to the success of a start-up restaurant in a Nuneaton. As always, we bring comprehensive round-ups of Upcoming Events and local News-in-Brief.

Please do get in touch if any of the programmes could benefit your business.

And, of course, have a happy and peaceful Christmas.

Rugby business equipped for growth after Skills support

"Such a broad mix of training is really going to help us individually but also help push the business forward. We are very grateful and the process was very straightforward."

A small business in Rugby is well-placed for growth after more than a third of its workforce underwent training supported by the Skills Escalator programme.
Five of the 13 staff at Croxford Electrical Contractors, in Hillmorton Road, had their skills honed in a range of directions which “is really going to help us individually but also help push the business forward,” says Operations Manager, Lorna Stanley,
Five employees, aged from 22 to 72, benefited from a diverse spread of Escalator-funded training which covered Electrical Inspection & Testing, an EV Charger Course, Sales for Non-Sales Professionals and ACCA F7 Financial Reporting. The Skills Escalator, funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and delivered by Warwickshire Skills Hub, supported the five employees with a grant allocation of £3,750.
Meanwhile, the business has also been supported to recruit an apprentice with the support of them Warwickshire County Council’s Apprenticeship Levy Transfer.  The 48-month programme, during which the recruit will undertake an Electrical Installation Apprenticeship, has a total levy transfer value of £21,492.00.
All the support, accessed through Warwickshire Skills Hub and Coventry & Warwickshire Growth Hub, has been of immense value to the business, says Lorna.
“We only have 13 people working here so for six of us to benefit is brilliant,” she said. “Employees have benefited in such different ways. “One member of staff in finance has been with us for quite a long time, and this has given her a great push to get back into learning. She has done one module thanks to the funding, and will now do two more so will get the qualification she started out towards 12 years ago. Another member of staff, who is 72, had some EV charger training. He really engaged with it which just shows you are never too old to learn new skills.
“The younger lads did the electrical training and the great benefit there is in retention. For a small business like us to be able to tell them they will get this training meant they didn’t have to look elsewhere, so we have been able to keep them.
“Finally, I knew we had a skills gap with sales and marketing, so I have done some training there, as I come from a HR background so this is the first time I have had broader responsibilities.
“Such a broad mix of training is really going to help us individually but also help push the business forward. We are very grateful and the process was very straightforward. I have done lots of these kinds of things in the past and they can be quite time-consuming, but this was very clear and easy with good advice available all the way through.”
The apprentice, too, is making a big contribution.
“It is a young man we knew about and who we felt was ready for full-time work but just needed some more direction,” said Lorna. “He is doing really well, really enjoying college, and we are very happy with him.”
Adam Plumb. Account Manager at Coventry and Warwickshire Growth Hub, said: “It has been a pleasure working with Lorna and the team at Croxford Electrical. Their genuine commitment to the growth and development of their employees is evident in everything they do.
“By engaging with the Warwickshire County Council Skills Hub, they have been able to access valuable support and resources that enhance their training approach and strengthen their position as a forward-thinking business. This partnership has not only helped them invest in their workforce but has also contributed to the continued success of their organisation.”
Steve Convery, Business Skills Support Team Manager at Warwickshire Skills Hub, said: “It is always inspiring to see businesses and its employees all on the same page, committed to working together to improve as individuals and as a business. Croxford Electrical is a great example of this and I am delighted that the Skills Escalator and Warwickshire County Council’s Levy Transfer programme has been able to support them to become really well-placed to grow in the future.”

Hotel lifts profile thanks to Project Warwickshire

“That help meant we could move forward with confidence in the ideas we had and to see those starting to come to fruition is great news for us but also for the local economy.”

A Warwickshire hotel is ditching its tag as a ‘hidden gem’ and is starting to shine after making significant investments and receiving support.

Weston Hall Hotel, a historic 38-bedroom hotel situated in Bulkington, has boosted corporate bookings and enquiries significantly in the past 12 months after taking advice on how to enhance its business-to-business profile.

Set in seven acres of Warwickshire countryside, the picturesque Elizabethan manor, run by Simon Evans, invested in creating the Stone & Ivy Restaurant and has also enhanced its corporate offer, which includes five function and conferencing suites.

Simon was able to access free business support and enlisted the help of Marie Stephenson, a business adviser at Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce, through Project Warwickshire.

Project Warwickshire forms part of the Business Growth Warwickshire programme. It is delivered by Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce, on behalf of Warwickshire County Council, and is funded by UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and Warwickshire County Council.

Through direct one-to-one support, Marie helped the business to create a bespoke, targeted marketing plan in order to raise the profile of the hotel with potential clients. The hotel was also given access to a LinkedIn workshop and has been supported to hone its own networking skills, which has seen it attending and hosting more events. And, by taking all of the advice and support on board, the hotel has seen a marked increase in events – from conferences to meetings – being staged there, as well as corporate clients utilising the hotel for overnight stays.

Simon said: “We knew, especially after the investment in Stone & Ivy, that we’d got a great product here and we just needed more people to know about it in the business world. Marie was a huge help and, by taking on board the advice she gave us, we’ve been able to grow our corporate bookings. Having a fresh set of eyes on the hotel has been so helpful and we now feel much more visible to the business community. That help meant we could move forward with confidence in the ideas we had and to see those starting to come to fruition is great news for us but also for the local economy.”

Marie added: “I love historic buildings and you can feel all of the charm and atmosphere from the moment you arrive.

“In our one-to-one meetings, I helped Simon to explore a variety of marketing streams and tell the story to the business audience in order to heighten the profile of the hotel, which has so much to offer, so that it had an impact on bookings.

“It’s great to see the plan working and I know that we, as a Chamber, have staged many events here too such is the quality of the offer.”

Councillor Rob Howard, Portfolio Holder for Economy at Warwickshire County Council, said: “Project Warwickshire supports business in the hospitality sector, such as Weston Hall Hotel, to not only be resilient but to grow and thrive.

“Tailored support from Project Warwickshire has allowed Weston Hall Hotel to understand what they want to achieve and the steps they need to take to realise their goals. The support from the programme has helped Weston Hall Hotel to create a bespoke marketing plan, identify new audiences to support their growth goals and raise the profile of the hotel leading to an increase in corporate clients both using their facilities for conferences as well as for overnight stays.”

Councillor Nicky King, Portfolio Holder for Business and Regeneration at Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council, said: “I am delighted that Simon and his team at The Weston Hall Hotel continue to show great creativity in building the business after accessing free business support, through Project Warwickshire. Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council are keen to promote the support available, funded by UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and Warwickshire County Council, to all of its businesses. “

Project Warwickshire Business Support for Tourism, Leisure, Retail and Hospitality SMEs is funded by UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and Warwickshire County Council. Responsibility for the planning and delivery of UKSPF was part of the Level 2 Devolution Deal secured by Warwickshire County Council in 2024. Warwickshire’s allocation of UKSPF is supporting a package of communities & place, business support, and people & skills activities in 2025/26.

Start-up Programme is Martina's springboard

“We worked on my packages, decided what to prioritise, and created short-term and long-term plans with deadlines...it was a game-changer.

A Rugby photographer says a regional support programme has not only boosted her business but made her feel like herself again.

Martina Rehakova moved to the area from Slovakia in 2008 and, for a long period, worked in a corporate environment.

But, after the birth of her son, Oliver, and later becoming a single parent, she rediscovered her passion for photography that stemmed from her own childhood.

After trialling the idea of photography as a business, she launched Martina Art Photography from her studio on the first floor of a property in Bank Street, Rugby, in February 2024. And while there were no question marks about her perfect portrait photos that drew praise from far and wide, Martina knew she needed help to organise and grow the business.

She contacted the Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce for support and was assigned to business adviser Mick Dalheley for one-to-one help. The support was offered through the Business Start-Up programme, which forms part of the Business Growth Warwickshire programme. It is delivered by Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce on behalf of Warwickshire County Council. The programme is funded by UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and Warwickshire County Council.

Martina said: “When I was younger, we had an old family camera and photography was something we all enjoyed. t wasn’t like today where you can take thousands of shots. You had to get the settings just right to capture a good picture. I still remember making prints with my dad in the bathroom under the red light, with the smell of chemicals. That memory has stayed with me.

“But back then, photography wasn’t considered a ‘proper job’, so life took me in a different direction. I studied economics at university and eventually moved to the UK, where I worked in finance. I never really felt like myself in that environment and when I became a single mum, it was like starting a new chapter and I wanted something that worked around me and my son and that gave me balance.

“I opened the studio in February 2024 and I worked a lot with women. For me, it’s not just about taking the perfect picture, it’s about the feeling and the connection. Many women come to me feeling overwhelmed or lacking confidence, and they leave the studio feeling proud and beautiful. That’s why I say I don’t take pictures with my eyes, but with my heart. It starts from the first message, I want clients to feel comfortable and understood, not just like they’re paying for photos.”

Martina also works with families and businesspeople and can take shots in her Rugby studio or outside in a range of locations.

She added: “As a woman, you start a business thinking you can work flexibly and fit it around your family life but you suddenly realise it is 24/7. You are trying to work on the business while taking care of the household and the family!

“One of my biggest challenges was structure. I’m full of ideas but struggle to organise them. When I started building my website and creating packages, it was overwhelming. I didn’t know what to focus on: branding, family photography, business portraits, and I was doing it all alone without a team. That’s when I started working with Mick at the Chamber. Working with him and listening to his advice gave me structure. He became my team!

“We worked on my packages, decided what to prioritise, and created short-term and long-term plans with deadlines. That way, I knew what to focus on. It was a game-changer. Mick helped me tidy up all of the ideas in my head and to focus on what mattered. He guided me on marketing and how to position my business.

“I can already see that my business is growing thanks to the help, but I also feel more relaxed and authentic again, which means more customers want to work with me because I am being myself.”

Mick said: “Martina is a truly talented photographer and an incredibly honest, authentic person which makes her the perfect choice for very personal photographic shoots. However, while she can always get her clients into perfect focus, she was struggling to focus on the areas of the business that would lead to growth and also give her the most satisfaction. By working with her, we could make short, medium and long-term plans and decide on two or three areas to concentrate on. Martina now has a great website, easy-to-understand packages, plans that she can manage and a really happy client-base.”

Councillor Rob Howard, Portfolio Holder for Economy at Warwickshire County Council, said: “It’s great to see the impact the Business Start Up programme can have, helping people such as Martina turn passions into businesses. With support from the programme new businesses can access dedicated advice and guidance to set out their goals and how they will be achieved, helping local start-up businesses to grow and thrive.”

Councillor Louise Robinson, Rugby Borough Council Portfolio Holder for Growth and Investment, Digital and Communications, said: “There are lots of decisions to make when setting up a new business - this can be challenging, especially as a sole trader.

“The support provided by Business Growth Warwickshire’s Business Start-Up programme helped Martina to work through these decisions and structure her business.”

 * The Warwickshire Start Up Business Support programme is funded by UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and Warwickshire County Council. Responsibility for the planning and delivery of UKSPF was part of the Level 2 Devolution Deal secured by Warwickshire County Council in 2024. Business Assembly will give region a stronger voice

"We’ve had really positive interest in the Assembly from employers – small and large."

Key figures in Coventry and Warwickshire from politics, business and education are being brought together to grow the regional economy and ensure the city’s and the county’s ties remain strong.

Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce is creating a Business Assembly to help give the region a stronger voice at a national level, to campaign on issues that matter to the area and to support local authorities during the local government reorganisation process.

The first event was held at Ansty Hall Hotel and saw around 30 leaders from the region present, with dozens more showing an interest in the group.

The Chamber shared a draft of a new Business Manifesto it has created in conjunction with think-tank Centre for the New Midlands for feedback. It includes information on the regional economy, its strengths and barriers to growth.

The Manifesto sets out a range of aims and ambitions covering a range of topics such as employment land, skills and business support.

Based on the feedback from the event, the Chamber and Centre for the New Midlands, which carried out survey work over several months earlier this year, will refine the document ready for a launch in the New Year.

Corin Crane, chief executive of the Chamber, said: “We’ve been working on the Manifesto for months with a view to bringing leaders from the region together in this way. We’ve had really positive interest in the Assembly from employers – small and large – from across the region as well as our MPs and local authority colleagues.

“It resulted in one of the most constructive and productive conversations I’ve been involved with and it was clear that everyone – no matter whether they are from business or politics – have the best interests of this region at heart.

“The feedback on our Manifesto was that we’d covered most of the issues that need addressing to get our economy growing but, based on the conversations, we’ll be adding in some additional priorities.

“The room was full of great energy and we’re all looking forward to meeting again in the New Year when we can officially launch our Business Manifesto and Business Assembly.”

Chris Smith, Founder and CEO of the Centre for the New Midlands, said: “As a Coventry headquartered organisation, we are delighted to be working with the Chamber on the development of its Business Manifesto because we believe that Coventry and Warwickshire has an enormous opportunity to shape its own future.

“Our role as a non-partisan, independent think-tank is to bring robust evidence, fresh insight and the voice of local employers into the policy conversation. By working closely with the Chamber and engaging widely with businesses across the region, we’ve been able to build a clear picture of both the challenges and the opportunities that lie ahead.

“This Manifesto is a vital step in ensuring that decisions about our economic future are grounded in real data, genuine collaboration and the ambition our sub-region deserves.”

Longstanding Henley business ready for growth

"The support from the Growth Hub and its partners has been critical in helping us prepare the business for this next step."

A long-established family-run engineering company in Warwickshire is preparing for a major new phase of growth after receiving comprehensive assistance from a leading business support organisation in the region.

Henley Engineers, founded in 1942 and based in Edge Lane, Henley-in-Arden, worked closely with Coventry and Warwickshire Growth Hub to modernise its operations, upgrade its digital infrastructure and identify new market opportunities including a strategic move into the military supply chain.

The business, which manufactures and fabricates detailed components for the commercial vehicle sector, employs 30 staff across its Henley-in-Arden site and a second facility in Redditch for larger components. Henley Engineers currently has an annual turnover of £2.5 million, and is now positioning itself for diversification and scaling up.

Coventry and Warwickshire Growth Hub account manager Nina Bale has provided support to Senior Business Development Manager Mike Beirns to access guidance, specialist introductions and grant opportunities to accelerate their plans.

This includes a successful application to Made Smarter West Midlands, securing a £2,000 grant towards a £70,000 investment in a new ERP and CRM system designed to bring procurement, sales, marketing and operations onto one platform. The system has already transformed internal processes by reducing the time taken from raising a PO to starting work on the shop floor from three days to just 20 minutes.

Work with the Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG) has further supported upgrades to IT infrastructure and digital manufacturing processes following an expert review of the company’s equipment and workflow.

Nina said: “Nick, Mike and the team at Henley Engineers are a great example of how a business can utilise Growth Hub support at every stage of their journey. Our work is not just about grants, it’s about networking, introductions and connecting businesses to the right partners at exactly the right time. Henley Engineers has embraced this fully, and their progress reflects the power of collaborative regional support.”

The company is also taking major steps towards automation, including investing in its first robotic welding arm following specialist training at Cyber-Weld in Southam and is exploring the deployment of a cobot capable of learning repeat welding tasks. Barcoding is being implemented across the full production process to support further efficiency.

Managing Director Nick Warmington, who joined Henley Engineers as a 16-year-old engineering apprentice before becoming the fourth generation to lead the company, said: “We’re pitching the business to the military supply chain and meeting the standards needed to supply into that sector. The support from the Growth Hub and its partners has been critical in helping us prepare the business for this next step.

“Digitising our processes, investing in automation and improving workflow has completely changed the culture of the business. We’re more efficient, more productive and better positioned for growth.”

Henley Engineers is also strengthening its future workforce pipeline. With current apprentices nearing completion, the firm plans to recruit two new fabrication welding apprentices next September, and is meeting with Stratford College and Coventry College. The business is finalising a new website, installing solar panels to improve its carbon footprint and continuing to refine its factory layout and workflow with support from regional partners.

Nick added: “This has traditionally been a functional fabrication business. With the help of the Growth Hub, we’re now thinking strategically about how every investment improves flow, efficiency and long-term capability. 2026 is shaping up to be an exciting year for us.”

Aerospace company is flying thanks to WMGP

"The Manufacturing Growth Programme has been an invaluable source of business insight and strategic clarity."

A Warwick-based aerospace company is planning to reach new heights with the support of the Warwickshire Manufacturing Growth Programme.

Located in the heart of Warwick’s Wedgnock Industrial Estate, CFS Aeroproducts Ltd (CFS Aero) has become a vital player in the UK aerospace sector. Since its founding in 2012, the company has built a reputation for excellence in the maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) of aircraft engines—particularly the ALF502/507, a model gradually being phased out of service.

As the aviation industry evolves, so too does CFS Aero’s vision. The company is actively expanding into servicing newer turbine engine models and engaging in cutting-edge research initiatives with the RAF, alongside projects exploring sustainable aviation fuels. With an ambitious goal to increase turnover by 50% within the next three years, CFS Aero recognised the need for external expertise and strategic support to navigate this next phase of growth.

To achieve its aspirations, the company sought assistance through the Warwickshire Manufacturing Growth Programme (WMGP).The programme offered access to strategic planning tools, leadership development, and essential financial guidance - key elements in tackling the company’s growth challenges. The Warwickshire Manufacturing Growth Programme (WMGP) forms part of the Business Growth Warwickshire. It is delivered by Oxford Innovation Advice on behalf of Warwickshire County Council. The project is funded by UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and Warwickshire County Council.

CFS Aero faced several internal hurdles, including the recruitment of experienced leaders and the upskilling of existing staff to meet evolving operational demands. There was also a pressing need for greater clarity on available funding sources to support innovation and expansion.

Through WMGP, CFS Aero engaged with GROWTH mapper®, a diagnostic tool that evaluates business strengths and identifies areas for improvement. Guided by local business adviser Michelle Connor, the senior management team underwent a comprehensive review of the company’s strategy, operations, and leadership alignment.

The diagnostic process was further supported by targeted workshops and referrals to innovation and financial support schemes, including Innovate UK, the Warwickshire Recovery and Investment Fund, and the Made Smarter programme. A pivotal component of the support was a consultancy engagement with business coach David Lowe, funded by WMGP. Using the GROWTH mapper insights, David worked closely with the company’s Chairman and senior leaders to assess internal alignment, clarify strategic priorities, and develop a detailed business model and strategy canvas.

This consultancy phase examined the company’s core competencies, cost structures, key technologies, and customer base. The outcome was a clear roadmap for sustainable growth—defining operational improvements, talent needs, and innovation opportunities aligned with CFS Aero’s long-term vision.

Michelle Connor praised the company’s commitment: “CFS Aero's proactive approach to embracing business support and innovation has set a strong foundation for their future growth. Their engagement with the GROWTH mapper process exemplifies how leadership development and strategic clarity can transform a business’s growth trajectory."

The impact of this support is already evident. CFS Aero has successfully safeguarded three jobs previously identified as at-risk and created an additional role, reinforcing its workforce as it moves into its next stage of development.

Looking ahead, the company aims to grow its team to 35 employees and reach a turnover of £10 million—goals it is now well-positioned to achieve, thanks to the structured support provided by WMGP.

Reflecting on the programme, Production Manager Dave Stuart said: “The Manufacturing Growth Programme has been an invaluable source of business insight and strategic clarity. Our senior team gained a lot from the workshops, and the GROWTH mapper review, combined with expert coaching from David Lowe, has been hugely beneficial. We’re already seeing the early impact of this work and are confident in the direction we’re heading.”

Councillor Rob Howard, Portfolio Holder for Economy at Warwickshire County Council, said: “The Warwickshire Manufacturing Growth Programme provides dedicated support to SME manufacturing businesses in Warwickshire. CFS Aero has demonstrated the impact of this support which has helped them to define their long-term vision for sustainable growth and led to building their workforce and working towards growing their turnover.”

Councillor Ella Billiald, Warwick District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Arts, Culture and Economy added: “From the District Council’s perspective, it is extremely rewarding that following our assistance with their relocation from Coventry Airport CFS Aero has put down firm roots in Warwick District and continues to thrive. We’re delighted that in addition, their participation in the Warwickshire Manufacturing Growth Programme is helping them to bring even more skilled employment opportunities to our area. We want to offer our congratulations for everything they have achieved and look forward to their future success.”

CFS Aero’s journey demonstrates how tailored business support, combined with expert advice and diagnostic tools, can unlock growth potential—even in highly specialised and regulated industries like aerospace. Through the Warwickshire Manufacturing Growth Programme, the company has strengthened its foundation for innovation and resilience—ensuring it continues to play a critical role in both the regional economy and the future of sustainable aviation.

Supporting the next workforce generation

“It is proven that young people who have regular, meaningful contact with employers are more likely to find employment or pursue further education or training."

Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce has pledged to support local schools and colleges to produce the region’s future workforce.

The Chamber, alongside Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce Training, has signed a memorandum of understanding to become a Cornerstone Employer.

It means the Chamber will join the Warwickshire Careers Hub in investing time and resources to support local schools and colleges with their careers education.

The business group, which represents hundreds of members across the region, will work alongside the Careers and Enterprise Company and the Warwickshire Skills Hub to inspire young people across the region and set them on the path to worthwhile and fulfilling careers.

There are around 450 Cornerstone Employers across the UK, which act as champions to encourage other businesses in their area to become involved in supporting schools and colleges, as well as encouraging their own staff to become Enterprise Advisors.

Enterprise Advisors are a network of volunteers who are either matched to an individual school or college, or work on specific projects or a collective of schools.

David Lennox, of Warwickshire Carees Hub, said: “It is proven that young people who have regular, meaningful contact with employers are more likely to find employment or pursue further education or training. That is why it is so important to have a network of businesses across the region who are Cornerstone Employers because it is a genuine commitment to support schools and colleges in giving young people exposure to the real world of business and employment.

“We are, therefore, absolutely delighted to have Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce and Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce Training on board. Not only can their teams bring valuable knowledge and experience, they can open the door for conversations with its members.”

A Cornerstone Employer is a business of any size that provides high quality careers outreach and opportunities for young people aligned to the local economy. Cornerstone Employer Groups work together within a geographical area to target disadvantage, promote pathways, upskill and inform educators, parents and carers and drive better outcomes for young people.

Matthew Hammersley, HR Manager at the Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce, said: “We are proud to become a Cornerstone Employer. As a Chamber, we’re here to support our members to grow, which has a positive knock-on effect for the local economy. We also want business growth to mean that communities across our region benefit and that means good, well-paid employment and training opportunities for our young people.

“By becoming part of this group, we can work with schools and colleges to showcase some of the opportunities available and give young people some exposure to businesses and businesspeople.”

CWRT gives structure to Aspire and Thrive

From launch to five Local Authority partnerships in one year: How Coventry & Warwickshire Reinvestment Trust funding helped Aspire and Thrive to build a Trauma-Informed Education Provider

When Aspire and Thrive launched in October 2024, the mission was clear, create a truly therapeutic, trauma informed alternative education provision that puts children and young people at its heart.

The need was significant. Traditional alternative education approaches often fall short for children and young people who've experienced trauma. Services that lack clinical oversight or psychological grounding can miss the deeper needs these young people have, leaving them to navigate systems that aren't designed to help them heal and grow.

Aspire and Thrive saw a better way. By combining over two decades of professional experience in local authorities, statutory services and regulated environments with a clinically supervised, psychologically informed approach, they could provide something different, an alternative provision that doesn't just manage behaviour, but creates the conditions for genuine transformation.

The approach worked. Within their first year, Aspire and Thrive has achieved impressive milestones:

• Became approved providers for five local authorities
• Secured multiple tender wins through competitive commissioning processes
• Received nominations for several industry leading awards
• Established commercial partnerships with local and nationally recognised organisations
• Most importantly, their children and young people felt safe and made measurable progress

But behind this rapid success was a fundamental challenge facing any new organisation working in social care and education.

Building Foundations in a Complex Sector

As with any new organisation driven by belief and purpose, Aspire and Thrive's founders needed to balance commitment with careful planning. Working in educational social care in the UK is complex a sector that traditionally faces significant public scrutiny where measuring impact and effectiveness can be nuanced and challenging. To launch and grow sustainably, they needed funding. But more than that, they needed a funding partner who understood the relational, human centred nature of their work.

Traditional funding wasn't necessarily unavailable, but it became clear that their approach required a different kind of connection. As a therapeutic, relationship based service, it was essential that the themes of connection, trust and empathy ran throughout their organisation from their vision and values to their partnerships and everyday culture.

Key challenges included:
• Building robust infrastructure, from offices and technology to recruitment capacity and operational frameworks
• Investing in people, systems and resources to support high-quality therapeutic practice
• Achieving accreditation as an academically recognised centre
• Scaling operations to meet growing demand while maintaining quality
• Finding a funding partner who believed in them as individuals and in their values base

The business needed a funding partner who could see beyond the numbers to understand the sector, the purpose and the real world impact of their work on vulnerable children and young people.

How We Structured the Solution

Aspire and Thrive hadn't worked with us before, but from the first conversation in spring 2024 our Loans Officer, Sahib, took time to understand their organisation, not just as a business, but the environment and ecosystem within which they operate. We kept the process collaborative and supportive. Sahib asked insightful questions, provided guidance and helped the team navigate the funding process with confidence.

Most importantly, our decision wasn't made solely by a computer we believed in them as individuals and in the purpose of their organisation. We structured an initial term loan facility through the Local Communities Enterprise Fund, backed by Warwickshire County Council, to enable Aspire and Thrive to launch in 2024. This was followed by refinancing in summer 2025 in response to significant organisational growth and emerging commercial opportunities. The funding was designed to:

• Build and strengthen the foundations of their therapeutic and educational approach
• Invest in becoming an accredited and academically recognised centre
• Support recruitment, infrastructure and systems including IT and operational processes
• Enable strategic growth while maintaining quality and integrity in delivery
• Help create a well resourced, fit for purpose organisation with the capacity and practical infrastructure needed to scale

This approach gave Aspire and Thrive the financial stability and confidence to think strategically about their future.

Results and Business Transformation

The funding transformed Aspire and Thrive from a startup with a vision into a rapidly growing organisation with real infrastructure and impact. A significant milestone came in November when they officially opened their new, multipurpose offices, with Sahib there to cut the ribbon, marking the tangible realisation of everything they'd worked toward.
With the investment in place, the team could focus on what they do best: providing therapeutic, trauma responsive education that helps children and young people not just survive, but thrive. The funding enabled them to:
• Invest deeply in their practice modality and therapeutic approach
• Recruit key operational, commercial and educational leaders with extensive experience
• Develop framework agreements and partnerships with five local authorities
• Win multiple tenders through competitive commissioning processes
• Build collaborative partnerships with local and nationally recognised organisations
• Co-create innovative, industry-leading initiatives representing new approaches within the sector
• Expand safely and organically to meet growing demand

Dave Hughes, Director of Aspire and Thrive said: "Our learning and partnership with CWRT has been instrumental in enabling us to build and launch Aspire and Thrive. More importantly, it has allowed us to invest deeply in our practice modality strengthening the foundations of our therapeutic and educational approach. The support we have received has enabled us to invest in our people, infrastructure and systems. As a result, Aspire and Thrive is now a well resourced, fit for purpose organisation."

Most importantly, the funding created the conditions for what matters most: children and young people feeling safe and making genuine progress. The founders could focus on strategic growth, new partnerships and delivering high quality therapeutic practice without worrying about whether they had the infrastructure to sustain it.
Since receiving the funding, Aspire and Thrive has continued to secure significant wins, with another major local authority agreement on the verge of confirmation, bringing long-term opportunities for continued growth.

The Broader Picture

For founders like those at Aspire and Thrive, this story demonstrates how the right funding partner can unlock potential by understanding what truly matters. By providing not just capital but also genuine support and belief in their mission, we helped transform a vision into a sustainable, growing organisation that's making a real difference in young people's lives.

At CWRT, we back businesses with real potential. We look beyond the spreadsheets to understand the sector, the purpose and the people behind the vision.

Apprenticeship drive is welcomed

Business leaders in Coventry and Warwickshire have welcomed the Government’s drive to offer thousands more apprenticeship places to young people.

The Government has announced a £725 million reform package to boost apprenticeships and tackle youth unemployment.

Over the next three years, it says 50,000 young people will benefit from fully-funded training with small and medium-sized businesses, after the five per cent co-investment rate for under-25 apprentices was removed.

A £140 million pilot will give Mayors the powers to connect NEET (not in employment, education or training) young people with local opportunities, ensuring training aligns with regional employer needs.

Businesses can also gain flexibility in training with new short courses in AI, engineering, and digital skills launching in April 2026, which the Government says will support growth.

Corin Crane, chief executive of Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce, said: “We welcome the real commitment to apprenticeships and we know that while some of this will be about saving money for businesses who want to take on an apprentice, it’s also another chance to get the message out there about how great apprenticeships are for individuals and employers. Through our own training companies and through many local FE colleges and independent providers, we see how apprenticeships offer a great route to employment for young people and a chance for firms to grow their own talent.

“While unemployment has remained fairly consistent over recent years, it has been at an alarmingly high rate for young people and it’s vitally important that the Government pulls as many levers as possible to address that. And, it’s crucial that businesses and individuals from both Coventry and Warwickshire can benefit from this latest announcement.”

Sally Lucas, executive director at Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce Training, added: “It is a really positive step to remove all the training and assessment costs from employers who don’t pay the Apprenticeship Levy for apprentices who are under 25.

“We know there has been a huge amount of talk about the cost of employment rising but this will be a real benefit to SMEs who are thinking of taking on an apprentice.

“On top of that, and while this is not new, employers don’t pay any National Insurance for an apprentice aged under 25 unless they earn over £50,000 so that is another reason to look at this as an option for growing a workforce.

“The ten per cent Apprenticeship Levy top up which saw the £1m of the allocation become £1.1m of virtual credit for levy payers to spend is coming to an end while Levy funds in digital accounts will expire in 12 months rather than 24 months. I’d urge firms to get in touch with us and we can help them to navigate the world of apprenticeships and training if they need support.”

Helping Warwickshire’s young people gain experience in the workplace

Work experience is an invaluable tool to help shape today’s young people into tomorrow’s future.

The opportunity of work experience provides a great platform for young people to learn more about the workplace and the different types of roles, industries and careers available.

Too many young people in Warwickshire are missing out on workplace experiences because there aren’t enough being offered – which is a real missed opportunity for our local businesses to help shape the workforce of tomorrow.

If businesses like yours don’t do their bit, who will?

And flexible workplace experiences make it easier than ever for businesses to get involved. If you can’t commit to opening your doors to a young person for a week, you can offer a project experience for a day, invite a class in just for a few hours or attend an event supported by the Careers Hub.

Whatever works for you works for us, and will work for young people in Warwickshire, because every bit of meaningful exposure to the world of work prepares them for it.

So reach out to us – as your local Careers Hub – at careershub@warwickshire.gov.uk.

We’re also hosting two free events in January where you can meet our team, find out more about the benefits of work experience and the types of support we can offer to help you set this up.

  • South – UK Battery Industrialisation Centre - Tuesday 27th January - 9am - 11am presentation, tour and networking (tea/coffee and pastries). Book your ticket here
  • North - Eliot Park on Wednesday 28th January - 9am - 11am presentation and networking (tea/coffee and pastries). Book your ticket here

Given a Fair Chance, Holly and Daniel are flying...

“I’m incredibly proud of Holly and Daniel for their commitment, enthusiasm, and resilience throughout their job search journey...watching their growth has been inspiring, and I can’t wait to see them blossom in this next chapter of their careers.”

A new restaurant in Nuneaton has hit the ground running supported by the skills of two talented young people recruited through the Fair Chance Employment Programme.
Saffron Table, a start-up Indian restaurant in Abbey Street, was opened by owners Falguni Patel and Manjit Kanwal last month. The business was launched with support from Warwickshire County Council's Local Communities Enterprise (LCE) Fund, delivered by Coventry & Warwickshire Reinvestment Trust.
The LCE Fund, has lent more than £4million to small businesses since its creation in 2022.
Starting up a business is a complex and multi-stranded enterprise and one of the most vital elements is building a strong team. So Falguni contacted the Fair Chance Employment Programme for help. The programme includes Warwickshire Supported Employment Service (WSES), run by Warwickshire Skills Hub for the County Council, which exists to support young people and adults with autism and/or learning disabilities with an aspiration to work.
WSES customers Daniel and Holly now have full-time roles at Saffron Table as Food and Beverage Team Member Apprentice and Hospitality Supervisor Apprentice respectively. Both are truly integral to the team, and the running of the restaurant, as two of only five full-time staff, along with the owners and chef. Daniel and Holly were assisted by WSES Journey Guide, Seema Vala, throughout the interview process.
Seema then worked with Falguni to devise a plan of reasonable adjustments and in-work support was to ease their passage into the workplace. Falguni said: “It is wonderful to have opened the doors of Saffron Table and we are delighted to have Daniel and Holly on board. They are a huge part of our team and it would not have been possible without the advice and support of WSES.
“It has been so reassuring to know their advisers were on hand to help us navigate the whole process, from creating a job-spec at the very start and then advertising the roles through to supporting the candidates at interview and as they settled into their roles.”
Seema Vala, Journey Guide for WSES, said: “I’m incredibly proud of Holly and Daniel for their commitment, enthusiasm, and resilience throughout their job search journey. Both have shown exceptional talent and determination, and I’m thrilled to see them join Saffron Table, where I know they’ll be amazing assets to the team. Watching their growth has been inspiring, and I can’t wait to see them blossom in this next chapter of their careers.”
Laura Delahunty, Business Skills Advisor at Warwickshire Skills Hub, said: “It has been really rewarding to have been part of this journey and to see the business go from idea to vision. To help guide them through the process of recruiting has been brilliant and I am very much looking forward to seeing how the business, and Daniel and Holly, thrive in the future.”
Warwickshire Supported Employment Service is a part of the Warwickshire Fair Chance Employer Programme, designed to support adults residing in Warwickshire, aged 18 or above with a learning disability and/or autism. The service, offering ongoing support dependent on individuals needs and challenges, is focused on inspiring individuals to gain and sustain employment, build independence, and develop essential skills.
The Warwickshire Skills Hub Business Advisors provide a free skills & training review throughout the business to see where a Fair Chance Employee opportunity may be considered. This may include 'job carving' which looks at a job description and carves responsibilities or tasks to make it inclusive to a person's specific needs. Across Warwickshire, 89 employers have now pledged to be a Fair Chance Employer and that number is growing all the time.
The Fair Chance Jobs Portal - Https://fairchancejobs.warwickshire.gov.uk/ - helps bridge the gap between the Fair Chance candidates looking for paid employment and the Fair Chance Employers looking for staff. The portal offers access to a variety of inclusive jobs. Fair Chance employers are supported with a 'wraparound' support package to ensure the smooth transition of employing new staff.
The support includes:
  • A full business skills review.
  • In-work job coach for people with Autism and/or learning disabilities and anyone with physical or mental health experiences
  • Employer workshops to raise awareness of all supportive needs in the workplace.
  • Mental Health support and prevention tools and resources
  • Tailored recruitment support
  • Job carving for new opportunities
Fair Chance supports Warwickshire residents who face barriers to employment, working closely with partners to support:
    • Foreign nationals who are part of our Resettlement Programme in Warwickshire
    • People with learning disabilities and/or Autism
    • Ex-armed forces personnel
    • Active armed forces spouses & partners
    • Young people aged 16-18 that are not in education, employment, or training (NEETS)
    • People over the age of 50 who are looking to get back into work or retrain
    • Care Leavers
    • Young Carers
    • Parents Returning to Work
    • People who have been made redundant

Warwickshire Women in Engineering 2025

JLR programme addresses STEM misconceptions

A recent survey of 1,000 school pupils aged 11–14 revealed misconceptions and barriers around STEM subjects, including the belief that STEM IS “just for boys.” JLR has launched an education programme to tackle those misconceptions...

JLR has launched Create Possible  a free online education programme for teachers and students aged 11–14, to help tackle classroom challenges and support efforts to close the UK’s STEM skills gap.
The resource includes talking heads of JLR staff who share their journeys into engineering and JLR and the kind of roles and activities they have in the business.
The staff include'
  • Ritika - doing a degree apprenticeship in procurement mixing work with study, and likes the mix of people she gets to meet in work and study.
  • Imsi - a Senior Data Analyst in the Engineering department. She gives a brief summary of the work she does on the new EV Range Rover, and credits the steer and guidance from her maths teacher.
The initiative follows a survey of 1,000 pupils aged 11–14, which revealed misconceptions and barriers around STEM subjects. Over a quarter (26%) of students believe STEM is “just for boys”, while only 1% think it’s “just for girls”. Encouragingly, 75% of girls say they would consider a career in STEM – compared to 88% of boys.
The survey also highlighted regional disparities in access to STEM opportunities. Pupils in London are nearly twice as likely to regularly attend extracurricular STEM activities such as science fairs (36% vs. 20% national average), pointing to a postcode gap in exposure and engagement.
To help address some of these challenges, Create Possible offers curriculum-aligned lesson plans, interactive activities, and engaging Q&A videos with JLR employees, designed to support teachers and help students identify their strengths, boost motivation, and improve academic outcomes.
The programme launch responds to growing concerns about the UK’s STEM pipeline, with recent Parliamentary research highlighting that demand for STEM skills continues to outpace supply across key sectors such as engineering, digital, and manufacturing. The report warns that without targeted interventions, the UK risks falling short of the workforce needed to drive innovation and economic growth.
Teachers face real pressures in preparing students for a fast=changing world. Through the launch of Create Possible, JLR is making a vital investment in future talent  helping address the UK’s STEM skills gap and secure the next generation of innovators.
Morgan Gore, Schools Engagement Lead at JLR, said: "Supporting the school’s Design Technology curriculum, Create Possible provides our students early access to realworld career insights, far beyond the traditional classroom experience. Through hands-on experiences and exposure to industry pathways, it’s encouraging them to explore future possibilities, make informed decisions, and grow in confidence.
Lorna Trout, Head of Design Technology at Oakley School in Warwickshire, said: "Create Possible builds on JLR’s longstanding commitment to advancing youth futures, complementing a suite of initiatives designed to inspire and empower the next generation. These include the JLR Schools’ Partnership Programme, launched in 2022 to strengthen links between industry and education, and the virtual work experience programme, which has engaged over 7,500 students since its inception in 2023.
In early 2025, this commitment was further deepened with the launch of the JLR Foundation, backed by an initial funding pledge of £2.5 million, to support children and young people  particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds  in reaching their full potential through targeted programmes and strategic partnerships.
Warwickshire Skills Hub and Warwickshire Careers Service have been working closely with JLR and other technology companies and schools and education providers in the county around STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) and STEM activity, and through the Future Skills Programme, to help shape skills delivery for the technologies and roles of the present and future. The Create Possible initiative from JLR is another angle and route for schools and educators to engage our young people in design and the making of products.

In April 2025, the Warwickshire Careers Hub partnered with Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) to deliver an invaluable Teacher Encounter at their cutting-edge Gaydon site. A Teacher Encounter is a unique opportunity for educators to step inside real-world workplaces, discover how classroom subjects come to life in industry, and gain fresh insights into career pathways and emerging technologies.

"The JLR experience was nothing short of inspiring," said Chloe Millage, Careers Service Team Manager at Warwickshire Skills Hub and Careers Hub. "Warwickshire teachers explored the heart of the automotive sector, enjoyed an exclusive guided tour of JLR’s state-of-the-art facilities, and connected with the bright minds shaping the future - graduates, undergraduates, and apprentices who shared their journeys and ambitions.

"This immersive day gave teachers the tools and knowledge to bring careers education to life, helping students see the exciting possibilities that await them in the world of work."

Guest column

Coventry and Warwickshire - a great business team

Coventry and Warwickshire have a great record of interaction and mutual support when it comes to supporting businesses and the local economy. That continuing harmony is crucial to the future prosperity of the region, says Corin Crane, Chief Executive of Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce

Putting more powers into the hands of local people and local businesses is always something to be welcomed but, for any Government, it’s always tricky to find the right balance.

Boundaries will always have to be drawn but, in the real world, individuals and companies will still live, work and play across those lines.

Devolution led to the formation of the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) in 2016 and while Coventry is a fully-fledged part of the WMCA, Warwickshire sits as a non-constituent member. As part of its Devolution White Paper, the Government wants all two-tier authorities to become unitaries. Here, that means our borough and district councils will go, and will lead to either one council body for the whole of Warwickshire or two; one for the north and one for the south.

We had a really interesting debate on this with Sir Jeremy Wright MP and John Slinger MP at our Annual Business and Economic Conference a few weeks ago. Whichever route we go down, it’s a seismic shift in local government. But, as we know only too well in this region and as I alluded to above, businesses and individuals don’t live their lives by political boundaries or structures. Firms work with companies close by or where there are natural synergies. Individuals look for jobs that they can commute to easily.

All of this happens thousands of times a day across Coventry and Warwickshire and it’s vitally important that we continue to champion the city and the county; not as two separate places, but as one. The economy of Coventry and Warwickshire works in harmony.  And, while we work closely and positively with the WMCA, there is still a very natural relationship between our city and county.

The Chamber is a longstanding champion of this region. Our former chief executive Louise Bennett was instrumental in setting up the CWLEP, which was one of the most highly-regarded in the UK and that really strengthened relationships between Coventry City Council and Warwickshire County Council, alongside the private sector.

This is a powerful relationship and is one to be nurtured for the good of the whole of the West Midlands because its success depends on the growth of Coventry and Warwickshire through joined-up, focused policies that don’t see local borders.

Our tourism offer is interlocked too. If you are visiting Coventry Cathedral, there is every chance that you’ll be taking in Warwick Castle and the delights of Stratford-upon-Avon too and, again, this needs to be fostered through bodies such as Destination Coventry and Shakespeare’s England.

I also look at our local employment land interest, which is more compelling than anywhere else in the region. Across Coventry and Warwickshire there is a list of sites that can create tens of thousands of jobs, so we need a joint effort to get the supply chain and workers ready for this, as well as joined-up, well-resourced planning teams to move it forward.

Take Frasers Group’s plans at Ansty Park. It sits inside the Rugby constituency and is, therefore, a Warwickshire scheme. But it will 100 per cent be a driver of growth for Coventry and the wider West Midlands too, as well as Warwickshire.

It’s for these reasons and more that we, as a Chamber, have instigated the creation of a new business assembly for Coventry and Warwickshire that brings together businesses, local authorities, education institutions and MPs. We’ve written a manifesto that was made in Coventry and Warwickshire and is something we will campaign on for the city and the county. And, while the final decisions on what happens in Warwickshire are taken, it’s vitally important that it isn’t left behind in areas such as business support. The concerning news from the recent Budget was the lack of money coming directly to the county for business support because regional pots are being directed to Combined Authorities and, if you fall outside one of those, you go into a national bidding process. It's something we, as a Chamber, will continue to raise because it’s vitally important for regional growth.

Talk Up Our Towns

Leamington people support ambitious plans for Parade

“These responses show a town that cares about its future."

A concept masterplan to revitalise Leamington Spa’s Parade has received high levels of support from local residents and people working in or around the town centre.

The Leamington Transformation Board, a body comprising representatives of the town, district and county councils, created an emerging Parade Masterplan before Warwickshire County Council surveyed the public, businesses and organisations across eight weeks in the summer for their views.

And after more than 3,100 responses to that exercise were analysed – a very high number compared to similar surveys - 76 per cent of respondents either agreed or strongly agreed with the masterplan.

The concept masterplan was created following months of engagement with local stakeholders, businesses and residents, and proposes concepts on how Parade can be improved for residents, workers, and visitors to the town.

Key components of the masterplan included pedestrianisation of the main street, the creation of a new town square near Leamington’s town hall for community events and performances, and environmental improvements such as new trees, planting, and seating.

The survey asked respondents to grade their feelings around the masterplan as a whole, as well as individual parts of the plan, in terms of strongly agreeing through to strongly disagreeing.

All twelve aims were supported by respondents, with strongest agreement for integrating trees and water features (89 per cent agreed or strongly agreed).

In addition, an open feedback section allowed respondents to share their own thoughts. 522 directly expressed support for pedestrianisation in this section, almost double the number of those who expressed opposition to it (262).

It is expected that a final design for Parade will be shared with the public in the new year subject to councillors agreeing to take the plans forward. Further public engagement on the finer details will also be held if the plans move on.

Mark Lee, Chair of the Leamington Transformation Board, felt the results showed the strength of feeling in the town for the future of Parade.

He said: “These responses show a town that cares about its future. People want Parade to be greener, safer and more welcoming, and we’re really pleased that so many are backing our vision to improve it.

“We want Parade to be a place where businesses can thrive and people want to spend time. With strong public backing for the masterplan and its core aims, we can now move forward with confidence to refine the designs and deliver the transformation Leamington deserves.

“Should councillors agree to take the plans forward, there will be further chances for the public to share their thoughts on the detailed design. This is certainly not the end of the public’s involvement with this scheme.

“But their initial feedback has been highly positive, and shows a groundswell of support for what we are trying to achieve with this project.”

Cllr Jennifer Warren, Warwickshire County Council’s portfolio holder for transport and planning, said: “Parade is such a key road in Leamington and is crucial to the town’s economy. "We want to make sure that we get any changes right so that we deliver a town centre that is fit for purpose. The success of this engagement and the input of so much informed opinion is an excellent starting point.”

Cllr Chris King, Warwick District Council’s Cabinet Member for Place, added: “I’m really pleased to see how many residents have taken the opportunity to share their views and support for the Transformation Board’s vision for the Parade. Being central to the connectivity of the town centre, for businesses and for residents, it was important to ensure we hear their views around the potential ideas for improvements.  We can now start to build on these plans and work towards developing a greener, more sociable, and event-focused town centre, for the whole district to enjoy.”

BEAS energy audits lead to big savings

"Many small businesses will save money far into the future with the improvements funded by BEAS grants and the process starts with the audit so I would encourage all small businesses to get in touch and get their audit organised.”

Small businesses across Warwickshire have been encouraged to take advantage, while they still can, of a free energy audit as the first step towards significant energy and cost savings.

More than 250 businesses have already benefited from the Warwickshire Business Energy Advice Service (BEAS) audit which identifies ways in which businesses can become more energy efficient and, in turn, cost effective.

The Business Energy Advice Service (BEAS) is a pilot scheme led by the Mayor of the West Midlands, the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) and the Department for Energy Security & Net Zero (DESNZ). Warwickshire County Council (WCC) is the lead delivery partner for the Warwickshire area with further funding from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. Coventry City Council has been appointed by WCC to deliver the energy audits.

Once a business has received an audit, it can then apply for grant funding to put the recommended actions in place. So far, £2.1million in grants have been awarded, leading to a potential £0.6m reduction in energy costs per annum with a potential annual C02e saving of 626 tonnes.

A further £15m of potential savings have been identified in the audits, including no-cost measures (such as ensuring the heating is set correctly) and projects with a return on investment of less than two years (for example upgrading to LED lighting).

So far in 2025, £938,128 in grants have been awarded to 41 businesses spread across all parts of the county and many sectors. Companies which have benefited range from pubs to recycling centres and sports clubs to care providers. Work funded includes the installation of solar panels and batteries, heating systems and insulation as well as upgrades to windows and doors, roller doors, and compressors.

Among businesses to have benefited is Harry Burrows Fabrications, in Nuneaton, whose managing director Marc Burrows said: “We are so grateful for the WBEAS support. It will really help us try to take the business to the next level. We have a fantastic workforce here, which we really value, and they take a lot of pride in the business, as do we all, so as a board we will do our best to keep pushing forward.”

Grants allocated to businesses across the county have ranged from £1,500 to £100,000 and more funding remains in the pot to be allocated. But any interested business needs to get its audit arranged quite quickly as the scheme ends next spring.

Warwickshire County Council’s Business & Growth Programme Manager for BEAS, Liz Clark, said: “It has been great to see such a positive reaction from such a wide range of businesses towards this funding. Many small businesses will save money far into the future with the improvements funded by BEAS grants and the process starts with the audit so I would encourage all small businesses to get in touch and get their audit organised.”

SMEs invited to 'Mobilise' on zero-emission

"We are very proud of this unique and targeted product offering, which supports the most innovative start-ups, spinouts, and small businesses who are truly the future of mobility for the UK.”

This month has brought the opening of a 12-month programme targeted at UK-based SMEs, start-ups, and spinouts focused on developing zero-emission automotive, and Connected and Automated Mobility (CAM) technologies, products and services.

The 'Mobilise' programme is funded by the government’s Department for Business and Trade (DBT) and facilitated by the Advanced Propulsion Centre UK (APC) and Zenzic.

The automotive industry in Warwickshire, from design to manufacturing, is a major employer, accounting for over 45,000 jobs across the city and county. Many of these are in SMEs manufacturing and supplying larger local OEM original equipment makers and their suppliers with goods and services. Mobilise will be present a great opportunity for many of those SME businesses.

Grant funding of up to £173,500 is available with opportunities for ambitious start-ups, SMEs, and spinouts developing zero-emission and CAM products, services, and solutions to progress their early-stage businesses towards investment and market readiness.

Delivered in two phases, Market Focus and Technology Validation, Mobilise combines a unique blend of grant-funding, mentoring, and networking opportunities to help accelerate technology to market and enable businesses to be better-positioned to attract future investment.

Mobilise offers:

  • Business strategy and commercialisation guidance, and opportunities for technology development.
  • Mentoring in strategic focus areas, delivered by independent business advisors and investors covering; commercial strategy, intellectual property management, investment-readiness, new product development, cost engineering & supply chain, leadership, and new-venture growth.
  • Concept validation and testing, including access to world-class CAM Testbed UK facilities.
  • Peer-to-peer learning via a support network of like-minded, ambitious businesses.

APC and Zenzic have deep experience running business accelerator programmes. The  100+ businesses that have been through their programmes have raised over £443 million of private investment and made significant commercial progress following their time on the programmes.

Rik Adams, Innovation Delivery Director, APC, said: “There’s a giant void between having an idea or an invention and turning that into a real-world business. Mobilise offers a unique blend of grant funding, mentoring, and networking opportunities within the mobility sector, helping businesses to create robust strategies and business models to accelerate their route to market.

"We are very proud of this unique and targeted product offering, which supports the most innovative start-ups, spinouts, and small businesses who are truly the future of mobility for the UK.”

Mark Cracknell, Programme Director, Zenzic, said: “The future of mobility in the UK will be built on the back of ambitious SME’s bringing their innovative technologies to enhance our evolving Transport and Automotive sectors. Mobilise serves as an exciting opportunity for these businesses to take a big step towards market readiness. Mobilise works for a range of SMEs in the sector, from start-ups or university spinouts to more mature SME organisations that can benefit from the programmes’ business strategy and development mentoring. I would encourage anyone interested in how the programme can support them to get in touch.”

For Mobilise, the kind of companies sought are :

  • Ambitious UK-based micro, small, and medium-sized companies.
  • Businesses developing either zero-emission mobility or Connected and Automated Mobility (CAM) technology, products, or services.
  • Businesses that can demonstrate the feasibility of their technology concept through modelling or initial prototyping.
  • Businesses should be open to exploring routes to market for their technology and be able to benefit from programme activities.

February 2nd, 2026, at 11:00 GMT is the deadline for applications.

For more information and to apply, please visit the Mobilise website.

If you are interested in talking about Mobilise specifically contact the APC or Zenzic. For wider business support in  Warwickshire, please visit:  https://www.warwickshire.gov.uk/businesssupport

Help others keep warm this winter

Warwickshire businesses have been encouraged to become collection points for a charity helping people to stay warm and safe throughout the winter.

Act On Energy, an expert energy advice charity offering free, impartial advice across the West Midlands, Warwickshire and Worcestershire, has launched a 'Keep Warm Appeal.'

"Over the winter, everyone can expect to see their energy usage rise and, for people who are already struggling to afford their bills, this can lead to energy rationing and self-disconnection," said a spokesperson for the charity. "Similar to a Giving Tree, we are offering local community organisations the opportunity to become partners in driving, and becoming drop-off points for, donations that we can distribute to vulnerable people in the West Midlands. We are asking for items that can help keep people warm this winter."

Items welcomed include warm socks, woolly hats, gloves, scarves, blankets, adhesive draught tape, insulated flasks, hot water bottles, reusable hand-warmers and blanket hoodies. All sizes - baby, toddler, kids, teens, adults - are wanted. To comply with health & safety, the charity can only accept new items in their original packaging. Items will be delivered to residents by the charity's outreach officers, so items must be below 5kg.

For organisations which prefer to take a collection, then these funds can be donated through the charity's website or, for larger donations, contact the communications department if you would like a member of the team to attend in person for a photo opportunity. Cash donations will go towards Act on Energy’s general work and it cannot be guaranteed that they will go towards buying a specific item.

If you would like to drop off the items yourself to the charity's Salford Priors (Warwickshire), or Birmingham office, then please contact communications@actonenergy.org.uk to arrange a date. Otherwise, donations from can be collected by the charity from local businesses and organisations.
