Time running out to apply for game-changing WBEAS grants
Warwickshire SMEs have been urged to ‘sign up now’ for an energy audit as the first step to receiving grant support which is transforming businesses across the county.
Warwickshire Business Energy Advice Service (WBEAS) has already allocated grants of just over £403,000 to 12 businesses to help them become more energy efficient and thereby make significant savings.
A further £596,000 in grant funding is still to be awarded - but time is running out. Grant projects must be completed before the end of the current financial year, so businesses need to start the process by booking a free energy audit before 29th November. A subsequent grant may then fund up to 50% of project costs to a maximum value of £100K.
Among businesses to have received grant support already is Serene Care which runs Rugby Care Home in Clifton Road, Rugby. They received a WBEAS grant towards three major strands of work; upgrading an old gas boiler, installation of LED lighting and replacement of 1980s doors and windows.
Alongside the WBEAS advisor’s energy management recommendations, the work will save the business an estimated 31.35 tonnes of Co2 per year with an annual energy cost saving of around £15,000.
Serene Care chief executive Jay Dodhia says the support has been “fantastic” - and is urging businesses to get in touch with WBEAS.
“I would just like to say thank you so much,” said Jay. “I would encourage all businesses that are in a similar position to get their free energy audit booked as soon as possible because it not only improves your environmental efficiency but can make the business much more cost-effective. Sign up now!
“Without the WBEAS support we wouldn’t have been able to do the upgrade that was so badly needed. Everybody involved has been so helpful. Adam Plumb from Coventry & Warwickshire Growth Hub was great and put us in touch with Warwickshire County Council’s delivery partners at Coventry City Council. Business Energy Advisor Denise Osborne came out and did the survey for us and that was critical because without that we wouldn’t have been known what we needed. Denise was very comprehensive, and Louisa Smith at the County Council has also been fantastic, very patient and so organised, to guide us through the process.
“The boiler upgrade was most critical so that was done first. The lighting is now being upgraded and then the doors and windows. We are using local suppliers to do the work so the local economy is benefiting too and all this would have been unaffordable without the grant.”
Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for Economy, Cllr Martin Watson, said: “I am delighted that Serene Care and 11 other business across Warwickshire are now so much better placed for the future following WBEAS grants.
“To reduce emissions and at the same time become more productive and cost-effective really is a win-win, but time is running out so please, small businesses, get in touch with our team and book that initial energy audit.”
WBEAS was launched earlier this year as a part of the £4.6 million Business Growth Warwickshire Programme, developed and commissioned jointly by Warwickshire County Council and the five District and Borough Councils in the county. The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero is also funding an expansion to the service as part of a West Midlands Combined Authority pilot including the grant scheme which is managed by the County Council.
Coventry City Council has been appointed to deliver the WBEAS service on behalf of the County Council and the five District and Borough Councils.
WBEAS grant process is easy but leads to big wins
“The improvements have been great for us. I would absolutely say to other businesses to have a look and see what a WBEAS grant could do for them.
Business owner Carl Jay is delighted by the impact of the grant - and encourages other SMEs to take advantage of an application process which is pleasingly quick and simple.
Just Nice Clean Cars, in Millers Road, is now powered in a much more energy-efficient way after undergoing a free WBEAS energy audit followed by grant support towards necessary improvements. The business upgraded its heating system, replacing an outdated gas boiler with electric radiators and infrared panels and installing a new water heater.
“The improvements have been great for us,” said Carl. “I would absolutely say to other businesses to have a look and see what a WBEAS grant could do for them. We are now running so much smarter and the grant process was easy.
“When I saw the application form it looked a little bit daunting, as these things can, but I filled in the form, took a few photographs and emailed them in and it was all done. I thought it would be really time-consuming, taking up most of a day, but it wasn’t at all. It moved really quickly. Apart from getting quotes for the work, which depends on the tradesmen of course, it probably took three or four hours, which is amazing.
“The process started with the energy audit which was really useful. We had an idea of what we wanted, so that helped, but it doesn’t matter if you don’t know, that’s what the audit is for, so they can say what’s needed.
“They told us how we needed to upgrade and then local traders did the work and did an excellent job and our heating now run much more efficiently. We have a great little app that you can set so you know you are not heating rooms that are empty.
“We are saving money and running a lot smarter which means we give a better service to our customers and the community. The building might look quite green with these window frames but now we can actually say we are being even greener as it helps us achieve another step in the right direction to realising our business sustainability and environmental goals.”

Supported Interns blossoming on career path at County Council
“The students have responded by bringing their valuable skills to the role and, a month in, I’m already thinking what could they possibly go on to do in terms of paid employment because that’s key."
Three young people with SEND are taking the first steps towards fulfilling careers after starting Supported Internships at Warwickshire County Council.
Warwickshire College students Abigail Masters, Katherine Webb and Charlie Nutt have joined WCC as interns and will be working with the Council for a whole academic year.
They will rotate each term between placements with Business Support, Shire Hall Meet & Greet, and Heritage & Culture.
Those departments have been chosen because much of their day-to-day activity is people-facing and requires many of the skills that young people need to go on and build a career.
The three students attend college once a week and work at the council for three days, supported in their placements by their job coach, Karen Griffin, who works for
Warwickshire College Group.
Supported Internships are a full-time, structured work-based education programme based primarily with an employer. They help young people aged 16-24 with an Education, Health and Care Plan to achieve paid employment and usually last for an academic year. While in the workplace, the intern is supported by both their employer and their job coach. The primary goal of the programme for the young person is to move into paid employment.
This is not the first time that WCC has hosted Supported Internships. The scheme initially began in 2019 but had to conclude due to the pandemic. It is a concept which the County Council resoundingly supports, however, and is pleased to have now reactivated, said WCC Apprenticeships and Placements Practitioner, Dan Nash.
“It’s brilliant to have the scheme return and to support young people with such an inclusive and life-changing opportunity,” said Dan. “It was always our ambition to bring the scheme back and to make it work here at the Council. Abi, Katherine and Charlie are only a month in but have progressed really well and settled so quickly since joining us which is great to see. This is their last year of full-time education so for them to be gaining such direct experience of a workplace is brilliant. They will be with us for the whole academic year, from September to July,
“The placements they will do with their respective teams are very much focused on customer service and administration skills which are key foundation skills for young people in general. We built the Internships around that and are really grateful to the teams in Meet & Greet, Business Support and Heritage & Culture for putting themselves forward as champions of enabling employment for all. They have made the students very welcome.
“The students have responded by bringing their valuable skills to the role and, a month in, I’m already thinking what could they possibly go on to do in terms of paid employment because that’s key. It’s not just about the duration of the internships, it’s making sure it leads to something tangible. It’s very much my intention to enable paid employment for these three by the end of the year, ideally with the Council but elsewhere if a better opportunity awaits there.”
Alicia Hookey, Work Experience and Supported Internship Coordinator at Warwickshire College Group, said: "The students completing this placement are progressing well and already growing in confidence and independence skills. The support from the job coach and placement hosts, ensures the job roles are accessible for all learners, meaning they are gaining practical experience of the workplace whilst building employability and skills needed for the future.
"Feedback from within the organisation shows that the students are working well independently and as part of a team, acting with professionalism and putting 100% into all of the tasks expected of them. The students are already displaying noticeable improvements in their problem-solving, communication, organisation and time keeping skills. Overall I am so pleased with their progress and this experience is providing them with an impactful and successful learning experience.

Food & Drink Showcase delivers winning connections for suppliers
“As a region we have an excellent range of suppliers of food and drink, and as employers and part of our visitor offer, they are vital towards our economic growth."
A major food and drink showcase has served up more than 100 potential new customers to Coventry and Warwickshire’s diverse range of hospitality sector suppliers.
The Coventry & Warwickshire Food and Drink Showcase welcomed around 30 exhibitors to Warwick Racecourse, including some of the best food and drink producers from across the region.
It took place as part of the Grand Season Opener at the racecourse, with business-to-business networking, workshops and expert advice in the morning, before opening up to racegoers in the afternoon. The event attracted breweries, distilleries, vineyards, pizzerias, bakeries, coffee companies and many more suppliers to the hospitality sector.
The showcase was organised by the Coventry and Warwickshire Local Visitor Economy Partnership (LVEP), which includes Destination Coventry, Shakespeare’s England, Warwickshire County Council and Coventry City Council. It provided opportunities for exhibitors to meet decision makers from potential clients and encourage people across the sector to discover and use local suppliers.
Entertainment included performances from spontaneous poet Judge the Poet from Stratford-upon-Avon, who took words from the audience and crafted an improvised poem about the event. Guests were also treated to a live cookery demo from award-winning chef Sophie Hyam, who spoke about championing local suppliers and cooked a succulent rib-eye steak for the audience to enjoy.
Businesses also gained insights into business support, procurement, packaging, sustainability and business development from an expert Q&A panel. The panel included Steve Ogden, General Manager at Ansty Hall, Laura Delahunty, Account Manager at Coventry and Warwickshire Growth Hub, Mark Farr, CEO at Purple Planet Packaging and Daniel Bentley, Operations Director at Cobbs Farm Shop.
Councillor Martin Watson, Portfolio Holder for Economy at Warwickshire County Council, said: “As a region we have an excellent range of suppliers of food and drink, and as employers and part of our visitor offer, they are vital towards our economic growth. Coventry & Warwickshire Food and Drink Showcase was a vibrant event, imaginatively hosted by the Local Visitor Economy Partnership and hopefully yielded many productive connections for its exhibitors and visitors.”
Colleen Muldoon-Taylor, Business Development Manager at Destination Coventry, said: “This event was a celebration of Coventry and Warwickshire food and drink, showcasing the amazing array of incredible producers and suppliers we have in this region. We set out to highlight the diversity of food and drink in the region and the event certainly did that. We hope that it will provide a boost to their businesses, and they also went away with some insights on how to take their business to the next level from our expert panel.”
Darren Tosh, Operations and Marketing Director at South Warwickshire’s tourism board Shakespeare’s England, added: “Our local food and drink suppliers are the bedrock of our communities – and our tourism offering too – both directly to consumers and also to venues and attractions themselves, so it was brilliant to see some of our most talented independent businesses expanding their network. It was great to walk round the room and hear so many great stories – from businesses started up during Covid that are now flourishing, others gearing up to expand their footprint, and those that are championing sustainable packaging.”
Councillor Jim O’Boyle, Cabinet Member for Jobs, Regeneration and Climate Change at Coventry City Council, said: “We are always looking at ways we can support local businesses and the many local people that run them or work for them and events like these really help make that happen. Events like this showcase the great talent we already have, and encourages new businesses to work in this growing sector which is turn creates jobs and boosts the economy. It’s a win-win for everybody.”
Creative Rugby business on the rise thanks to Project Warwickshire
"The support has been indispensable in helping me grow my business and expand my professional network."
A business in Rugby is bringing a dose of creativity to the town after receiving free business support from the Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce, funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and Warwickshire County Council.
Homelike Art is run by Adrianna Bodzioch, who moved to the UK from Poland in 2017 and initially worked in car parts production for two years.
But, after the birth of her daughter, Emilia, and some time out, Adrianna decided to return to her creative roots as an artist and art teacher of many years, and launched a business delivering art classes and workshops.
These include everything from kids’ classes through to corporate events and from school settings through to adult workshops in a café or bar, accompanied by a glass of wine, but all with a focus on arts. They include a whole range of art techniques, including drawing, acrylic painting, watercolour painting, graphic techniques, clay sculpture, scratch art, paper art and mixed media.
The business has been supported by the Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce’s Project Warwickshire - Visitor Economy and Hospitality Support Programme, delivered on behalf of Warwickshire County Council and the five District and Borough Councils. It has helped Adrianna to identify her target market and develop business and marketing plans to help her to grow the business.
The Project Warwickshire - Visitor Economy and Hospitality Support Programme offers one-to-one bespoke business advice and also online and face-to-face workshops that are part-funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and Warwickshire County Council.
As well as the one-to-one help with a business adviser, Russell Grant, the support also sign-posted Adrianna towards successful grant-funding from Rugby Borough Council which will mean even more workshops being staged in town centre venues.
Adrianna said: “By joining the business support programme, I received valuable support that has been crucial in navigating the challenges of running a successful business. The Chamber provided me with a wealth of resources and educational materials, which were essential in the early stages of my business to help determine the right direction. Through first-hand experiences shared by other businesses and support sessions, I gained insights into best practices and strategies for growth.
“The Chamber provided specific advice and assistance tailored to my business needs, covering areas such as operational support, logistics, and funding.
“One of the most significant benefits of joining the business support programme was the mentorship and support from seasoned entrepreneurs and professional leaders. My mentor provided valuable guidance on avoiding common pitfalls, focusing on key areas for success. Russell’s expertise was instrumental in helping me make informed decisions and build a solid foundation for my business.
“Overall, the support has been indispensable in helping me grow my business and expand my professional network. This network has been vital in providing ongoing support and opportunities, ensuring that I have access to the best resources and advice when needed.
“I received a grant from Rugby Borough Council, which helped me cover expenses for my new projects in the town centre. This financial assistance enabled me to launch and sustain these projects, further establishing my business in the community.”
Adrianna is now completing a course in art therapy, which will see therapeutic elements introduced to some of her workshops when she returns to work after the birth of her second child, which is due in September.
Russell Grant, business adviser at the Chamber, said: “We are so pleased to have been able to help Adrianna in the pursuit of expanding and growing her business. By offering one-to-one guidance, assistance on business and marketing planning and being there as a sounding board for ideas, we’ve been able to support her own creative ideas with practical business foundations. We wish Adrianna every success for the future with Homelike Art.”
Councillor Martin Watson, portfolio holder for Economy at Warwickshire County Council, said: “We are delighted to support Project Warwickshire, supporting our new and existing local businesses to grow and develop, expand their employment opportunities and contribute to our local economy.
“Homelike Arts was able to utilise the tailored support and advice from Project Warwickshire. The support provided to Adrianna helped her to identify her target market and develop a business and marketing plan reach her audience and grow her business.”
Cllr Louise Robinson, Rugby Borough Council portfolio holder for growth, investment, digital and communications, said: “It’s great to see how Adrianna has used the council grant and support from the Chamber to build a new enterprising and creative business.
“Enabling local businesses and arts to thrive are important priorities for the council. I hope Adrianna’s story encourages more people to come forward and apply for a council grant currently available to businesses and community organisations.”
The support was delivered by Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce on behalf of Warwickshire County Council and Warwickshire’s five District and Borough Councils. The support is part funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (via Rugby Borough Council), and Warwickshire County Council.

Manufacturing Growth Programme puts engineering firm "ahead of the game"
MAS Precision Engineering Ltd engaged with the Warwickshire Manufacturing Growth Programme as they look to grow their business and explore support options that can assist with recruitment and skills gaps. The programme is delivered by Oxford Innovation Advice on behalf of Warwickshire County Council and Warwickshire’s five District and Borough Councils. This case study highlights their journey towards growth with effective business support.
MAS Precision Engineering Ltd, based in Atherstone, Warwickshire, specialises in manufacturing high-precision parts using advanced computer-controlled sliding head, fixed head and multispindle lathes, alongside vertical machining centres.
Established and jointly run by brothers Martin and Steven Smith, the company has recently promoted Martin's son, Ben Smith, as the Engineering Manager. Operating from a 13,000 square foot unit, MAS Precision Engineering serves the automotive, motorsport, medical, electrical, hydraulics and renewable energy sectors. The company's turnover for 2024 is projected at over £1.3 million, reflecting steady growth since the COVID-19 pandemic.
Despite their success, MAS Precision Engineering face several barriers to further growth:
- Skills Shortages: Despite having trained and upskilled staff, the company struggles with recruiting skilled staff. Having recently lost two team members, MAS Precision Engineering are finding it challenging to compete with other SMEs and larger companies like Rolls Royce in a competitive market.
- Emissions Reporting: Compliance with the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) for exporting parts and the associated increase in steel prices pose additional challenges.
- CNC Machine Acquisition: While they have funds to purchase a new CNC machine, the lack of skilled staff to operate them remains a hurdle.
The Warwickshire Manufacturing Growth Programme provided MAS Precision Engineering with essential support to navigate these challenges. The programme offered advice on future growth and succession planning. The programme also facilitated referrals for the Decarbonisation Programme to address emissions issues, connected the company with recruitment resources, and supported their CNC machine acquisition plans with a referral to Warwickshire County Council.
Although it is too early to comment on outcomes related to greenhouse emissions and turnover increases, the support has set the groundwork for significant progress. The company is poised to grow its business in different sectors and implement a robust succession plan for Ben Smith to take over. In the future, MAS Precision Engineering aims to continue growing its business across various sectors, ensuring a stable and robust infrastructure for future expansion and leadership transition.
Martin Smith, Managing Director, said of the programme: "The support from Michelle Connor has been positive and allowed us to be 'Ahead of the Game'. The Digital Workshop was very informative and gave us insights into lean manufacturing."
Michelle Connor, Manufacturing Growth Manager for the Warwickshire Manufacturing Growth Programme said, “We engaged with Martin to support with skills gaps and recruitment, they need to focus on the infrastructure of the business to ensure that this is robust and fit for future work for Ben to take on once he becomes the MD.”
MAS Precision Engineering Ltd exemplifies how targeted business support and strategic guidance can lay groundwork and prepare forward thinking manufacturing businesses for future growth. They have made significant strides towards their objectives, setting a benchmark for other ambitious SMEs in the region.
The Warwickshire Manufacturing Growth Programme is part funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (via North Warwickshire Borough Council) and Warwickshire County Council.
Councillor Martin Watson, Portfolio Holder for Economy at Warwickshire County Council, said: “We are proud to work in partnership to deliver the Warwickshire Manufacturing Growth Programme to support Warwickshire’s manufacturing SMEs. The tailored support provided to MAS Precision Engineering has given them the knowledge and tools to grow their business and support skill development for new and existing staff, helping them to future proof the company.”
Leader of North Warwickshire Borough Council, Cllr David Wright said; “ We’re delighted that Warwickshire Manufacturing Growth Programme, part funded by UK shared Prosperity Fund via North Warwickshire Borough Council, has been so instrumental in the support and success of a North Warwickshire based family business. We’re looking forward to seeing more forward-thinking North Warwickshire businesses take the next step in their growth and we’re confident we will see similar levels of success to those that come through the Programme.”

Positive placemaking moves across the county
Placemaking in Warwickshire has seen some positive moving and shaking recently with exciting developments in the north, centre and south of the county.
After the businesses of Nuneaton voted in favour of establishing a new Business Improvement District for the town they are now searching for a Manager who can take the BID forward into its first five-year term.
Amanda Bourne of FindaBiz, who was instrumental in helping to secure the yes vote for the town, said: "The new BID has given the businesses in Nuneaton town centre a voice. It is run by the businesses for the businesses and will have a really positive impact on the town."
Meanwhile the Place Projects and Partnerships team at Warwickshire County Council sees group manager, Aaron Corsi stepping into the role of BID Manager for Stratford Business Improvement District. An experienced place maker who is qualified with the IPM (Institute of Place Management), Aaron's sustained impact during his 10 years at the council has been invaluable to towns and places throughout the county.
Aaron recently carried out the engagement work for Warwick Town Council to help them establish a Vision for the town. This has resulted in the appointment of a new Town Centre Manager for the town. Kelly Scott, who will help to turn the vision into reality.
Kelly has experience in local government, having previously worked for Redditch Borough and Bromsgrove District Councils. Her council career started in planning, where she took a particular interest in enforcement, which led her on to becoming a Centres Officer for Bromsgrove and Redditch. She is an advocate of the collaborative approach to place management and enjoys engaging with stakeholders to identify problems and make improvements.
"I'm excited to be taking up the role of town centre manager for Warwick," she said. "This town is already such a great place to live, work and visit but I'm looking forward to getting involved with all of our stakeholders to address any issues and make any improvements that will help increase footfall and attract more businesses to Warwick. I've already been out and about meeting people and am looking forward to all the great work we can do."

EquiBetter harnesses business support to target growth
"Having help in accessing funding was massive. It was at a point where I needed to be able to invest in the property and equipment so that has made a huge difference to where we are today.”
A Warwickshire business that offers physiotherapy to horses is breaking into a gallop for further growth after receiving free business support.
EquiBetter received the help from Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce, funded through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and Warwickshire County Council.
The company was established in 2023 by Gemma Howell, who decided to follow her dream of working with horses in her late 20s after working in a range of industries – from hospitality to investment banking..
That meant going back into education to become a Chartered Physiotherapist – for humans – before furthering her knowledge with a Master’s Degree in Veterinary Physiotherapy at Hartpury University after working in the NHS and private sector as a physiotherapist.
It was a journey that took more than ten years and saw the creation of EquiBetter which has now taken a site in Ashorne where it offers a whole range of care for horses including consultations through to ‘inpatient’ care where horses can stay in one of 14 stables. EquiBetter also offers a small number of livery services, where horses not in need of medical care can stay for a fixed fee.
The business has now taken on its first members of staff and has plans for growth after investing in the property and in new equipment – such as a Winback TECAR technology, which optimises tissue healing and pain management, to integrate with treatments and rehabilitation – that means Equibetter can offer even more services to both equine and human patients.
EquiBetter has received help from the Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce, through the Start-up programme which offers one to one bespoke business advice and also online and face-to-face workshops that is part-funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, Warwickshire County Council and the five District and Borough Councils in the region. It also resulted in a £10,000 Government-backed loan and grant funding through Stratford-on-Avon District Council that helped the company make the investments needed.
Equibetter has taken the additional opportunity to partner with the local College, Moreton Morrell, to offer student placements for those studying Equine Management and Veterinary Physiotherapy. The business, which has been purposely set up to create an environment conducive to teaching and learning, is currently supporting its first student on placement and in their studies and intends to support many more students in the future.
Since July 2024, Equibetter has been able to create part-time roles for yard staff, recruiting four members of staff to join the team.
Gemma said: “I always knew I wanted to work with horses, when an opportunity arose after the birth of my son, I gave it my all and followed the path to where I am today. It’s been a long road but I am really pleased with where we are now and the services we offer. We’re already attracting lots of clients – the livery service is proving to be very popular. We provide regular physiotherapy services for our equine inpatients and outpatients. We also have a human clinic on site, which enables us to work riders and people in the local area to help them recover from musculoskeletal injuries.
“The support from the Chamber has been invaluable. Sarah Humphreys was assigned to me as a mentor and she was a huge help and was someone in my corner telling me I could do it, which is what I needed to hear. Just having someone who will be honest with you but also encourage you is really helpful.
“I also completed social media and marketing workshops which have been beneficial too. When you are in the position of starting a business, the more help and information you can get, the better. And, of course, having help in accessing funding was massive. It was at a point where I needed to be able to invest in the property and equipment so that has made a huge difference to where we are today.”
Sarah Humphreys, Business Support Manager at the Chamber, said: “We are so pleased to see the progress made by Gemma and EquiBetter. It was so satisfying to be able to support a new business journey with a plan of action to create financial health, increase business knowledge and confidence, enabling the opportunity to turn their passion into a business – and a successful one at that!”
Councillor Martin Watson, portfolio holder for Economy at Warwickshire County Council, said: “The Warwickshire Business Start-Up Programme supports our new local businesses to access dedicated and one-to-one support along with training and access to funding to really help Warwickshire’s new businesses grow and thrive.
“It’s great to see the range of support provided to Equibetter, supporting Gemma to build her business. The tailored support and help to access funding allowed Gemma to invest in the property and equipment and expand her business offering.”
George Cowcher, Deputy Leader of Stratford-on-Avon District Council and Portfolio Holder for Economic Development, said: "We want to encourage innovation and the businesses of the future. It is always good to see local people starting up new businesses providing services required locally. We wish this entrepreneur every success.”
The support was delivered by Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce on behalf of Warwickshire County Council and Warwickshire’s five District and Borough Councils. The support is part funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (Stratford-on-Avon District Council), and Warwickshire County Council.

Bold updated Vision for ‘Life in Leamington’
The Leamington Transformation Board (LTB) has been working closely with a wide range of stakeholders through the summer of this year to produce an update to the previous 2018 Vision for Royal Leamington Spa town centre.
The Leamington Transformation Board brings together all three tiers of local government, to provide strategic direction for an ambitious programme of work to renew and regenerate the town centre.
The updated 2024-2034 Vision is the first piece of a series of commissions which intend to involve all who live, work and enjoy Leamington town centre in defining what the future of the place should look like and how, together, we will all achieve this.
Much has changed in the town centre since 2018, and this Vision update provides the high-level direction of travel against which all subsequent plans will be tested.
The LTB approved the document at it’s meeting on the 8th of October 2024 and the next step is for all three Councils, County, District and Town, to consider endorsing the Vision. WDC Cabinet are due to consider this on the 17th of October.
Mark Lee, Chair of the LTB commented: “Transforming Leamington is a key priority of all three local authorities and the extent of engagement on preparing this Vision has shown how passionate stakeholders are about the future of their town centre. This Vision articulates the headline themes of Healthy People, Healthy Place and Healthy Planet to restore Royal Leamington Spa as one of England’s finest town centres.”
The next piece of work commissioned by LTB is the Parade Masterplan which is now underway using the same consultant team as the Vision and specific engagement mirroring that on the Vision is being planned to be undertaken over the coming months.
The Transforming Leamington website will be kept up to date with the latest: https://transformingleamington.co.uk/
Event outlines support available for North Warwickshire businesses
Businesses in the north of Warwickshire have been urged to ask for support to help them grow.
Companies and organisations from across the area attended the North Warwickshire Borough Breakfast Networking event, organised by the Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce at the Coleshill Hotel in the town centre. The event was funded through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) via North Warwickshire Borough Council and Warwickshire County Council.
It heard from a range of speakers on what support is available, how to access it and, also, from three business people from North Warwickshire who have been helped by the Chamber at different points in their development.
Alex Taylor of ProGame Nutrition, who works with elite athletes - from giving them dietary advice through to cooking their meals - described how he received support, from the Warwickshire Business Start Up Programme, that recommended a rebrand which is already paying off.
Adele Adams, of Blabers Hall Vineyard in Fillongley, was helped through the Project Warwickshire Programme, where the business has diversified from making and selling wine with its own grapes to offering tourism experiences which have proved hugely popular.
And Hayley Cheshire told the room how her business – Hollybarn Farm Soaps and Skincare – had seen revenues rise since getting guidance from Sarah Humphreys, the Chamber’s Business Support Manager, through the Warwickshire Business Resilience and Growth Programme.
Sarah said: “It was so valuable to be able to hear directly from businesses who have been supported by the Chamber and how it has impacted all of them in such a positive way. It can range from strategic advice around planning right through to being emotional support and offering a confidence boost when it’s needed most.
“The event showed me that there is a real need to continue supporting our smaller businesses in the North of Warwickshire because they are the lifeblood of the regional economy.”
Kalie Sahota, Senior Contract Officer at the Chamber, added: “I’ve taken calls from businesspeople looking for support. You can recognise that they are nervous but also very driven to succeed so it was fantastic to hear the progress that has been achieved with our help.”
Warwickshire Skills Hub, which is part of Warwickshire County Council, gave an update on the range of support it has to offer to businesses – from helping to fund apprenticeships through to training provision for the over-50s.
The event also heard from Rachel Stephens and John Whitehead from North Warwickshire Borough Council on the area’s town partnerships that are supporting growth in Polesworth, Atherstone and Coleshill.
Sarah added: “There is lots of support available and, as a Chamber, we can help to signpost companies to the right help for them – whether they are just starting up or in need to help to move to the next stage of their growth.”
The Chamber delivers three programmes on behalf of Warwickshire County Council and the District and Borough Councils as part of the Business Growth Warwickshire Programme. Business Growth Warwickshire is part funded by UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and Warwickshire County Council. John inherits strong position as chair of WPDG
“We have an excellent working partnership with Warwickshire County Council, we are delivering results for the Council and that relationship will be crucial as we move forward."
A property development group in Warwickshire has named a new Non-Executive Chair to drive the next stage in its growth.
John Edwards has been appointed as Chair of the board for Warwickshire Property & Development Group (WPDG) – with previous Chair Ian Cox stepping down after three years in the role.
Edwards, who lives in Warwick, has extensive experience in urban and rural regeneration, economic development and property development.
He is the former Chief Executive of regional development agency Advantage West Midlands and Chair of the NHS Dudley Group of Hospitals. His last position was Chair of Midland Heart, one of the largest housing associations in the Midlands, a role he held for nine-years until 2023.
WPDG was launched by Warwickshire County Council in 2021 to realise the full potential of the Council’s development sites, commercial buildings and mineral rights across Warwickshire.
Edwards said: “I’m inheriting a business which is in a very good place and in a strong position to take advantage of opportunities across Warwickshire. The senior team here has great ideas on how to move the business forward and the board will work with the team to realise those plans.
“We have an excellent working partnership with Warwickshire County Council, we are delivering results for the Council and that relationship will be crucial as we move forward. Our focus remains on delivering economic value for the county while positively contributing to the lives of people that live and work in Warwickshire.
“We will continue to develop high-quality, sustainable homes across a variety of tenures, ensuring our work benefits all areas of the county and we will be exploring more opportunities in commercial development, with the aim of creating more projects like our successful scheme in Southam.”
Outgoing Non-Executive Chair Ian Cox has overseen the launch and first three years of operations at WPDG. The group has completed its first commercial scheme and has a pipeline of 250,000 sq ft of commercial floorspace. Its first homes are also now completed and the group has a residential pipeline of 2,200 homes being delivered directly and through its joint venture, Develop Warwickshire.
Cox added: “I’m proud of what we have achieved at WPDG over the last few years. We’ve had a strong start, however as the company continues to grow, we felt it was essential to bring someone on board with the next level of expertise. John brings the right skillset and mindset to carry us forward, while still retaining the company culture and collaborative ethos which has set strong foundations for WPDG’s sustainable future.”
Councillor Peter Butlin, Warwickshire County Council’s Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Finance and Property, said: “I want to pass on my thanks to Ian for his valued contribution to WPDG and leading the board during its first chapter during which the business has achieved so much in such a short space of time."

(Source: Annual Population Survey, Office for National Statistics, 2022).
People aged 12+ who live, work, or are registered with a GP in Warwickshire are entitled to free support. Smokers who sign up to their local stop smoking service get access to the following:

King's Awards
Record-breaking year for King's Awards in Warwickshire
“The King's Awards for Enterprise is a prestigious accolade and a prime platform for Warwickshire-based companies to earn acclaim on a national scale."
A record eight King's Awards for Enterprise have been awarded to Warwickshire businesses this year.
The King's Awards for Enterprise (KAE) is an awards programme for British businesses and other organisations who excel at international trade, innovation, sustainable development or promoting opportunity. They are the highest official UK awards for British businesses with recipients permitted to fly the King's Awards flag at their main office and use the emblem on their marketing material for five years.
This year, there were eight KAE in Warwickshire – a record number for the county and a huge achievement.
Cllr Izzi Seccombe, Leader of Warwickshire County Council said: “The King's Awards for Enterprise is a prestigious accolade and a prime platform for Warwickshire-based companies to earn acclaim on a national scale. The awards also align perfectly with the County Council’s commitment to promoting sustainable economic growth.”

Aston Martin award is a "significant boost to Warwickshire's economic growth"
"Aston Martin’s recognition with The King's Award for Enterprise in Innovation is a proud moment for the company and a significant boost to Warwickshire’s economic growth, reinforcing our status as a centre of innovation and industry."
Aston Martin was formally recognised in an official award presentation last month by the Lord Lieutenant of Warwickshire, Tim Cox.
The Gaydon based company achieved The King’s Award for Enterprise in Innovation earlier this year, which is one of the most prestigious awards for UK businesses.
In September the Lord Lieutenant of Warwickshire, along with one of his cadets, ATC Corey Cox, presented the award to Michael Straughan OBE, an Executive Director of Aston Martin, and a selection of Aston Martin staff.
Speaking about the award, Lawrence Stroll, Executive Chairman of Aston Martin, said: “As a company with a commitment to innovation, we are incredibly proud to be recognised with this King’s Award for Enterprise, which celebrates both the ingenuity of our craftspeople and the quality of Aston Martin’s bespoke interiors.
"This award recognises the unique composition of our ultra-luxury interiors and how our manufacturing team have gone to extra lengths to ensure the highest level of personalisation is offered to our customers, whilst not compromising on our seat technology’s core functionality.”
Tim Cox, the Lord Lieutenant of Warwickshire, said: “It is a privilege to present Aston Martin with The King’s Award for Enterprise in Innovation. This award is a testament to the company’s relentless pursuit of excellence and cutting-edge technology. Aston Martin continues to set the standard for innovation in the automotive industry, and their contribution not only elevates British craftsmanship but also enhances Warwickshire's reputation as a hub for world-class manufacturing.”
Cllr Martin Watson, Warwickshire County Council Portfolio Holder for Economy and Place, said: “Aston Martin’s recognition with The King's Award for Enterprise in Innovation is a proud moment for the company and a significant boost to Warwickshire’s economic growth, reinforcing our status as a centre of innovation and industry. This can only be good news for other Warwickshire businesses with the profile and recognition it brings to the region. My heartfelt congratulations to Aston Martin on this well-earned honour."

"Honoured and humbled" to receive King's Award
“There is no doubt this award will help our business enormously through recognition, reputation, and staff morale. It also prepares us well for the next stage of our journey as we strengthen and grow the business.”
Warwickshire-based company Multifleet Vehicle Management Ltd was recently recognised in an official award presentation by the Lord Lieutenant of Warwickshire, Tim Cox.
The company has achieved The King’s Award for Enterprise in Innovation, which is one of the most prestigious awards for UK businesses. First established in 1965, the King’s Awards for Enterprise celebrate the success of exciting and innovative organisations that are leading the way.
The Lord Lieutenant of Warwickshire, Tim Cox, attended Multifleet’s head office in Henley-in-Arden to formally present the company with its award. One staff member commented that “Tim was fantastic, taking time to speak to everyone and to understand our business. The award is recognition for the hard work, dedication and commitment of our whole team, and the lift the award has given to our team cannot be quantified.”
Multifleet Vehicle Management Ltd is one of the leading leasing and fleet management businesses in the UK. Trading as runyourfleet, they provide a complete fleet management solution through their own cloud-based platform. The company has been trading since January 2011 and currently works with 1200 business with fleets from 2 - 2000 vehicles; runyourfleet’s managed fleet now stands at 32,000 vehicles.
Working in partnership with leading service providers, the company offers businesses of all sizes a comprehensive range of fleet management and fleet funding solutions. Major investment in systems and pioneering, flexible, cloud-based customer service technology have resulted in runyourfleet offering their customers an innovative, industry leading fleet management solution, with Multifleet providing forward thinking vehicle leasing options designed to future proof its customers’ fleets.
Reflecting on the company’s latest achievement, Steve Whitmarsh, Chief Executive Officer of runyourfleet, said: “We are truly honoured and humbled to receive the prestigious King’s Award for Enterprise for Innovation in recognition of all the hard work our team has put in to developing our runyourfleet platform.
“There is no doubt this award will help our business enormously through recognition, reputation, and staff morale. It also prepares us well for the next stage of our journey as we strengthen and grow the business.”
Tim Cox, the Lord Lieutenant of Warwickshire, said: “The King’s Award for Enterprise is the most prestigious award for businesses in the country, with hundreds of applications being submitted each year in the hopes of achieving this award. It’s always a pleasure in my role as Lord Lieutenant to meet the teams behind the fabulous businesses we have here in Warwickshire, and I was delighted to present Multifleet with their well-deserved award.”
Cllr Martin Watson, Warwickshire County Council Portfolio Holder for Economy and Place, said: “I would like to extend my congratulations to Multifleet Vehicle Management Ltd on this remarkable achievement. The King's Award for Enterprise in Innovation is a significant accolade that demonstrates the incredible talent and ambition that we have within Warwickshire’s business community. We are proud to have companies like Multifleet who contribute positively towards Warwickshire’s economic growth and presence on the national stage.”
Multifleet first decided to apply for The King’s Awards for Enterprise following a recommendation from the CEO of the Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce (GBCC), Henrietta Brealey, after they successfully applied and won GBCC’s award for Excellence in Technology and Innovation last year.
The company also applied as they operate in an industry dominated by competitors that are either bank-owned or are part of a multinational institution, which can make it difficult for independent, privately-owned businesses like Multifleet to compete. Achieving a Kings Award for Enterprise should now help to level out this playing field and open doors to new opportunities.
As part of the application process, Multifleet had to demonstrate how they have overcome industry challenges. For example, new vehicle supply constraints caused significant disruption in the market, leading to extended retention periods for vehicles and greater demand for rental vehicles. This resulted in a lower order take for vehicle leasing services, but was balanced out with a greater demand for fleet management services as vehicles require more servicing and repairs as they age.
Multifleet’s new daily rental module also enabled customers to book hire vehicles to supplement their fleet requirements. This increased demand for rental was seen across the market, leading in turn to shortages in rental supply. To counter this, Multifleet increased their supply base from three national suppliers to include over 90 local rental operators. This meant that their company was uniquely placed to meet their customer’s needs.
Since September 2022, Multifleet has achieved 99% fulfilment of all rental requests at a time when the industry was achieving around 50% fulfilment. As new vehicle supply continues to improve, they expect to be well placed to move customers in to long-term leased vehicles, saving customers on cost and delivering long-term residual income for runyourfleet.
It is the flexibility in Multifleet’s platform that has allowed them to respond to changing market conditions, turning a problem into an opportunity for profit, growth, and increased customer satisfaction.
Looking ahead, Multifleet has exciting plans to deliver more system developments and product launches to help drive growth, including entering new markets and offering services that their competitors do not have. Innovation is always at the heart of Multifleet in order to fuel growth - and the company even has its sights set on applying for another Kings Award for Enterprise in the future.
For Warwickshire businesses considering to apply to The Kings Awards for Enterprise, a spokesperson from Multifleet advised: “Check the criteria carefully for the category that you wish to apply for. If you can, attend any online or local workshops to gain an insight into the process. Most importantly give yourself time to fill in the application, as the whole process takes about seventy hours, so set time aside each week to sit down and concentrate. It’s also great to involve other team members from each of the relevant departments if you can.”
For companies interested in applying for an award and would like more information, please email the Warwickshire Lieutenancy at lieutenancy@warwickshire.gov.uk.
