WARWICKSHIRE MEANS BUSINESS

Welcome

Welcome from Monica Fogarty

Hello and welcome to the May edition of Warwickshire Means Business.
I must open by sharing a significant change in that the County Council political leadership has changed following the elections on May 1st, with a shift to a minority Administration led by the Reform UK.  I have been working with the new councillors and can tell you that the Council’s commitment to supporting the business community is unchanged.
At the heart of our Council Plan are commitments to promote inclusive, sustainable economic growth and support successful business, good quality jobs and future skills. Those objectives remain at the core of the business and skills support that we provide and in this edition of Warwickshire Means Business we feature just some of the many ongoing programmes that are delivered in communities across the county, week in and week out, by ourselves and our partners.
A real success story of the last two years has been the creation and progress of Warwickshire Supported Employment Service (WSES). Its mission is to support Warwickshire’s young people and adults with autism and/or learning disabilities into paid work and Jordan’s Journey is a wonderful example of that.
Moor Farm Stables is another organisation which does wonderful work with young people in the community and we hear how that work has been enhanced by support from the very successful Skills Escalator programme. The Warwickshire Business Energy Advice service has also proved a great success and we report the big difference its support has made to two businesses - Technoset and Hertz Electrical - in Rugby.
We also look forward to some exciting events coming up in June. Interactive Futures 2025, at the Royal Spa Centre, Leamington Spa, on June 13 and 14, will showcase the vibrant talent and creativity within Warwickshire’s gaming industry.  On June 24, Eliot Park Innovation Centre will be the venue for the sixth Coventry and Warwickshire Workplace Wellbeing Forum which will help local businesses continue to improve the health and wellbeing support they offer to their employees.
We bring the customary comprehensive round-ups of News-in-brief and Upcoming Events from around the County. It's undoubtedly a very busy time and there is so much going on in Warwickshire – we have so much to be proud of and it was great that our fantastic offer as a business base was showcased to a huge audience at UKREiiF last week.
Take a look and have a great read...

Workforces upskilled by Skills Escalator

“The Skills Escalator Fund is a great opportunity for businesses to access financial support to develop and grow their employees and businesses."

Over 350 Warwickshire businesses have benefited from funding from the Skills Escalator Fund to support employee training, enabling them to upskill their workforce.

The Skills Escalator Fund offered businesses funding towards employee training. The fund provides up to £750 per employee and businesses can access funding for up to five employees per business, enabling businesses to train and upskill their staff in a wide range of areas, helping them to grow and develop their staff and businesses.

The funding was available for any business, Industries from health and beauty to manufacturing, automotive, and charitable organisations were amongst the many businesses who have received funding to upskill their employees.

The Fund, which due to its success will relaunch in June, is used to support any training that supports the business. This includes courses to develop management and leadership skills and communication skills through to workplace compliance training, such as, first aid at work and health and safety courses or sector specific training, for example, Prince 2, Digital Marketing and Leadership Courses.

MV Composites in Leamington Spa is an example of how the Skills Escalator Fund has allowed them to further train their staff and start a night shift at the factory. Directors Matt Lainsbury and Will Waterman explained: “We needed to start a night shift and as part of this we must have somebody trained in first aid and a fire warden present on every shift. We have spent a lot on the building itself, so wouldn’t have been able to afford the training ourselves, so the grant was perfect and allowed us to upskill our staff and start our new shift pattern.”

Mark Ryder, Executive Director for Communities at Warwickshire County Council, said: “The Skills Escalator Fund is a great opportunity for businesses to access financial support to develop and grow their employees and businesses. Creating a skilled workforce is key to help sustain and grow businesses and last year 809 employees accessed training as a result of the fund with a total of 725 gaining certified skills, qualifications and licences.

“The funding covers the cost of training up to £750 or is used to part fund the training which in many cases allowed the business to accelerate their investment into training and help them to drive their plans forward.”

The Skills Escalator Fund, delivered by Warwickshire County Council, is funded by UKSPF and in partnership with the county’s district and borough councils.

Riding school staff hone safeguarding skills

“The Skills Escalator funding really helped. It was amazing how it came at exactly the right time. The training was brilliant and has helped us make sure everything is right with the children.

A riding school and training centre is better-equipped than ever to deliver its longstanding excellent work in the community after receiving support from the Skills Escalator programme.

Moor Farm Stables, in Corley Moor, teaches horse-riding and horse care for the general public from ages three years to 80-plus. They deliver British Horse Society courses for children and young people who have become disengaged or excluded from education or training, and those with needs which mean they require additional support. Moor Farm Stables is also a member of The Riding for the Disabled Association and specialise in riding for people with disabilities.

More than 250 riders a week benefit from the skills, care and compassion of the 15-strong team under business owner Liz White who has owned and run the stables since 1991. Those riders enjoy contact with horses in a safe and beautiful environment in the hands of staff who have all benefited from recent safeguarding training funded by the Skills Escalator,

“Safeguarding has of course always been integral to what we do,” said Liz. “The extra training has benefitted as to extra requirements needed for school children on our courses, to ensure that our training is equivalent to that of the school teachers. The Skills Escalator funding really assisted the business. It was amazing how it came at exactly the right time. The training was brilliant and has helped us make sure everything is up to date for the children we take.

“We are very lucky to have such a wonderful team here. All the training we do, from coaching training, First Aid training, Safeguarding training, horsemanship and riding skills training etc filters down though the staff to our 250 riders a week. We always want to learn more and improve, we pass our knowledge on to our clients.”

Part of the Skills Escalator funding will also enable Liz and some of her staff to receive training from the organisation set up by renowned horse whisperer Monty Roberts.

“Monty is one of the world’s best - he has worked all kinds of horses and for many people, including for the Queen,” said Liz. ”He trains horses with the carrot rather than the stick which is brilliant because you get much more out of animals with that approach. I am very excited to take the extra course.”

The Skills Escalator programme is managed by Warwickshire Skills Hub and funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund in partnership with the county’s district and borough councils.

Steven Convery, Business Skills Support Officer at Warwickshire Skills Hub, said: “Moor Farm Stables has been doing wonderful work in the community for many years and the skills and sense of vocation of Liz and her team are inspiring to see. I am delighted that the Skills Escalator training has proved so helpful to them.”

Partners together promote City and County

Public and private partners joined the annual UKREiiF event in Leeds to promote the opportunities in commercial property development in Warwickshire and Coventry. Warwickshire County Council's Inward Investment Specialist, Ian Flynn, part of the Council's team at the event, reports.

The UK Real Estate Infrastructure and Investment Forum (UKREiiF) in Leeds, in its fourth year, attracted a record 16,000 delegates. Exhibitors and delegates include national, regional and local Government, commercial and residential developers, investors and a range of agents and intermediaries.

Warwickshire County Council and Invest Warwickshire returned with the ‘Warwickshire Creating Places’ panel session in the Midlands Engine Pavilion. Warwickshire County Council's arms-length property company Warwickshire Property & Development Group (WPDG), private sector partners and a local university discussed the role of partnership and sustainability in successful development.

Our panel ‘Sustainability in Development’ considered that multi-faceted subject with a broad panel including Molly Turpie (Marriott Hotels), Peter Vale (Severn Trent), Ned Williams (Evans Randall) and Kate Howe (Tritax Big Box). The second panel ‘Partnerships in Development’ comprised Jo Russell (Stoford Developments Ltd), Jane Coleman (University of Warwick), Stuart Buckley (Warwickshire Property and Development Group) and David Smith (IM Properties) and looked at how stronger partnerships deliver better development.

Later with Coventry City Council in the West Midlands Pavilion, city and county partners looked at the role of innovation and clusters in supporting development in ‘Maxisimising Clusters – Innovation Driving Development in Coventry & Warwickshire’. The panel comprised Complex Development Projects and University of Warwick Science Park, major local developers of space for companies active in tech, engineering and software and video game development, Severn Trent, as well as city and county reps. It was an opportunity to champion the Coventry & Warwick Gigapark Investment Zone and Greenpower Park, MIRA Technology Park and the University of Warwick Innovation Campus at Wellesbourne, as well as innovative funding partnerships like Coventry & Warwickshire Launchpad, supporting the digital creative sector. For the county, it was also a good opportunity to promote and celebrate innovative solutions to the shortage of SME space, through the delivery of space through WPDG, and the funding for new space from the Warwickshire Property Infrastructure Fund (PIF), part of the Warwickshire Investment Fund.

On the first day, the PIF was also in focus as the county council reps joined the CBRE facilitated round table ‘Unlocking UK Growth: Harnessing Impact Investing to Drive Economic Transformation’, hosted in the UK Government Investment Hub, which included a presentation from Jamie Broderick of the Impact Investing Institute.

Invest Coventry & Warwickshire used the UKREiiF event to launch an updated ‘Coventry & Warwickshire Investment Prospectus’ featuring the major developments MIRA Technology Park South Site, Transforming Nuneaton, Coventry & Warwick Giga Park, Greenpower Park, Rugby Town, Creative Quarter Royal Leamington Spa, University of Warwick Innovation Campus and Stratford-upon-Avon and other schemes, including a new Mountpark development near Nuneaton, and the Panattoni development on the Bedworth/ Coventry border. The updated prospectus includes over 3m sqft of new industrial space across the city and county, and 69,000sqft of new SME space, and the overall quantum of existing and new space in development underlines ongoing confidence in the area.

Three main sponsors joined our ‘Developer Showcase’ session. IM properties celebrated 40 years of development along the M42 corridor, Tritax Big Box talked about the 1m sqft of space over three units speculatively developed on the edge of  Rugby town centre and Stoford Properties talked about the importance of bringing forward sufficient employment land to facilitate the delivery of more SME space, including the use of grey-belt land. Elsewhere in the programme, WPDG appeared on the main stage in the Bury Theatre talking about the delivery of new homes. WPDG is delivering 2,500 new homes and has a 250,000sqft pipeline of light industrial space.

The city and county continue to be a leading destination for foreign direct investment (FDI) - the area welcomed 54Foreign Direct Investment projects into the city and county for 2024-25, and the Invest Coventry & Warwickshire area was namedthirdregion for 'Foreign Direct Investment Strategy' by FDI Intelligence Magazine/ Financial Times (2024). Other powerful messages to the market included local success in securing the Creative & Immersive Launchpad, which has allocated £3,885,395 from the Innovate UK Creative & Immersive Launchpad programme to 30 businesses, and a high number of  King’s Awards for Enterprise recipientsin Warwickshire – 8 successful companies in 2024. The county can also point to a comprehensive level of support to businesses around skills and careers, with over 900 businesses gaining skills support, over £1.4m of Apprenticeships supported by WCC Levy Funds and 99 apprenticeships supported, ranging from levels 2-6.

Mark Ryder, executive director for communities at Warwickshire County Council, said: "Warwickshire is one of the most dynamic economic locations in the Midlands and the UK. The county is a popular destination for both UK and foreign direct investment, and the area is home to some of the most important commercial property developments such as Coventry & Warwick Giga Park, one of the eight UK Investment Zones, MIRA Technology Park South Site and major town centre opportunities like Transforming Nuneaton, Creative Quarter Leamington Spa and Rugby Town Centre.

“UKREiiF is a great opportunity for us to promote our partner organisation, Warwickshire Property Development Group and the new homes and SME commercial space being developed by them in the county, and Warwickshire County Council's Property Infrastructure Fund, which can lend up to £10m to bring forward commercial development projects in support of growth and jobs’.

David Smith, Director of Planning and Communities at IM Properties, said: ‘We welcome the opportunity to partner with Invest Warwickshire on our continued journey of investment in the West Midlands. From our beginnings nearly 40 years ago at Haseley Manor, we have grown to become one of the largest investors along the M42 corridor and within the region, bringing forward close to 14 million sq ft of commercial space and supporting over 14,000 jobs, with a further 8,000 jobs in the pipeline.

Stoford Planning Director Jo Russell said: “There is a significant window of opportunity for developing land within the Grey Belt, capitalising on the Government's clear intentions to deliver growth in areas that do not contribute strongly to the purposes of Green Belt and /or are previously developed. In addition, with the NPPF now in place, and an opportunity through devolution in the next few years, closer working between the Coventry and Warwickshire authorities and the private sector can focus on how economic growth can go hand in hand with locations well served by public transport/rail infrastructure and thereby assist local people in accessing employment."

Joseph Skinner, Development Director at Tritax Big Box, said: “Iron Mountain chose Symmetry Park Rugby for its excellent connectivity and the ready supply of skills that exist locally, but also because they bought into its environment-friendly fabric. We expect further interest in phase three from other forward-thinking organisations seeking to harness the advantages of this site on their journeys to greener, leaner expansion.”

“This joined-up approach ensures that when we come to the planning application everyone is clear on what our objectives are, clear on who TBB is and what we actually do.And, by developing this site together, we’re helping to attract quality investment into the UK, bringing jobs and new skills opportunities for the region’s residents and businesses."

Business support is literally life-saving

"Ella completed her training on the Monday...on Friday, she saved a life."

Business support led to the best possible benefit when a remarkable chain of community connections led to a life-saving intervention in Rugby town centre.

The incident happened on Friday 4 April 2025 while customer David suffered a cardiac arrest when visiting MACK Hair Studios hairdressers on Lawrence Sheriff Street. In a fortunate coincidence, 21-year-old Ella McCauley, a staff member at neighbouring bar, INSIDE THE 22, had just completed first aid training, funded by local business support. This was to prove critically important.

“I only completed my first aid course the previous Monday," said Ella. "The ladies from Mack ran into our bar to ask if anyone had first aid training, and thankfully I was able to step up. I tried to get David to open his eyes, but he wasn’t responding. I told someone to quickly go and get a nearby defib and started CPR. When the paramedics arrived, they told me I was doing a great job and to carry on whilst they cut his clothes off, and I just kept going, giving it all I had. If I wasn’t there doing CPR in those minutes, I’ve been told that he wouldn’t have made it.”

Claire Gillooly, owner of MACK Hair Studios, said: “David has been a beloved customer of MACK for many years. Seeing him like that was such a shock, and it became apparent very quickly that he needed urgent medical assistance. I’ll be forever grateful that Ella was there that day. Her and her colleague Sam’s immediate response made all the difference. This experience has shown us that we’re not just individual businesses - we’re a community that supports each other when needed most.”

The incredible lifesaving story began with a chance conversation between two business owners at a new Rugby First business community forum event at the end of January.

INSIDE THE 22 owner Oliver Taylor explained, “During a networking meeting organised by the town centre’s BID, Rugby First, for a group of local Rugby businesses, I met members of Coventry & Warwickshire Growth Hub who offered their services and advice on grants that may be available to us. We were looking to get all our shift leaders and managers Fire Marshal and First Aid trained. Ella has recently been promoted to Restaurant Manager and as such, she was offered the opportunity to take the same training as other members of the team.

"Thanks to Rugby Borough Council’s shared prosperity fund in collaboration with Warwickshire County Council, we received full funding for Ella’s training and four other members of the team including Sam Ayris, who went to fetch the nearby defibrillator used in the incident. Ella completed her training on the Monday prior to the incident. On Friday, she had saved a life. We could not be prouder of her.”

Linda Lowne, director of Rugby First, said: “This extraordinary sequence of events from a casual conversation at our Business Forum that led to life-saving action just weeks later demonstrates why bringing local businesses together and fostering a true sense of community is so important. This incident has proved how this training saves lives, and we are so proud of the businesses and individuals involved. I’d encourage all local businesses to take advantage of the funding and training opportunities available through Rugby First, Coventry & Warwickshire Growth Hub and the Warwickshire Skills Hub.”

Steven Convery, Business Skills Support Officer at Warwickshire Skills Hub whose organisation facilitated the training for INSIDE THE 22, commented: “I am proud to have supported a local Rugby business in accessing a grant for essential first aid training. I know our grants are important, but this just goes to show the critical impact they can have, as this one has already saved a life. When supporting businesses in accessing funds, we don’t always appreciate the value they bring. This one has made me truly appreciate the impact they can have, and I feel proud to have done my small part in supporting INSIDE THE 22 and Ella.”

Jordan’s journey towards employment

Tailored support and interventions from Warwickshire’s Supported Employment Service (WSES) can transform lives, as shown by the impact the service has made to Jordan, supporting him to grow in confidence and move closer to employment...

Warwickshire Supported Employment Service is designed to support Warwickshire’s young people and adults with autism and/or learning disabilities with an aspiration for paid work. Through WSES, Jordan was referred to WorkWell - an initiative to support individuals across Coventry and Warwickshire with mental health or health-related barriers to find or retain employment – and was supported by journey guide, James.

Working with James, Jordan created a person-centred action plan detailing the steps he will take to help reach his goal of employment and was referred and signposted to a range of services based on his individual needs. Jordan was referred to Talking Therapies to help build his confidence, along with Sycamore Counselling and CASS to help him move towards work. Together, this allowed Jordan to make an informed choice to engage with the support, with his journey guide supporting him every step of the way.

To help build Jordan’s confidence alongside promoting a healthy lifestyle, James supported Jordan to attend Boxing Clever in Nuneaton where they offer a supportive environment for individuals with complex needs, disabilities, and challenging home lives. Lee, the founder of Boxing Clever, said: "Our goal is to create a safe and encouraging space where everyone can thrive and develop skills that will help them in their personal and professional lives, Jordan has done really well and that's down to his commitment and enthusiasm, we've just given him the platform. It’s been a pleasure watching his confidence and drive grow.”

Jordan added: "I’ve received a range of support through James at WorkWell and the WSES team. From therapy and counselling through to Boxing Clever, they’ve all helped to build my confidence and learn new skills that will help me in my journey towards employment."

Following the guidance from James through the WorkWell programme Jordan has built a solid foundation of mental health support and confidence building activities to prepare him to engage in job searching. Once at this stage, James re-engaged the WSES team to support Jordan towards employment.

David Ayton- Hill, Director of Economy and Place, said: “Jordan's journey is a testament to the power of comprehensive support and tailored interventions. With continued guidance and encouragement, Jordan is on a promising path towards improved mental health and meaningful employment.

“The Work Well programme has shown the benefits of connecting individuals with their local communities and ensuring that complicated referrals and assessments do not create a barrier to vital services being accessed.”

Jordan’s WSES journey guide Jodie Kilworth added: 'Jordan's growth in confidence and positivity has been remarkable, thanks to the personalised support from James and Workwell. The seamless referrals and communication within the skills hub have greatly benefited him. Since rejoining WSES, Jordan has actively participated in various activities, including a team-building workshop, an Industry Tour, and a job interview. The future looks promising as he continues his journey towards paid employment.'

Rail Live 2025 returns to Warwickshire

"The largest outdoor rail exhibition in the UK, attracting 7,000 rail professionals a year, representing all aspects of the rail industry and rail technologies."

The year 2025 marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of the modern railway.  Britain and the world changed forever when the Stockton & Darlington Railway opened on September 27, 1825, connecting places, people, communities and ideas and ultimately transforming the world. Railway 200 is a year-long nationwide campaign to celebrate 200 years of the modern railway and inspire a new generation of young pioneering talent to choose a career in rail. It invites community, rail and other groups to get involved.

So now is a good time to remind readers that next month Stratford and Warwickshire welcome Rail Live, the major rail trade show returning for its annual stop at the Long Marston Rail Innovation Centre, from 18th-19th June. It is the largest outdoor rail exhibition in the UK, attracting 7,000 rail professionals a year, representing all aspects of the rail industry and rail technologies.

Coventry & Warwickshire is a leading UK centre for the design, development, commercialisation, manufacture and sales of all kinds of vehicles, from car to SUVs, from motorcycles to commercial vehicles, from defence vehicles to off-highway and motorsport, from aerospace to vertical take-off vehicles and autonomous pods. It is also a centre for the design and development of rail technologies.

The revolutionary very light rail technologies with light-weight battery powered vehicles and low impact light rail track infrastructure, were conceived and developed in Stratford by Transport Design International, working in recent years with WMG at the University of Warwick. The Coventry VLR has been on test at the Very Light Rail Centre in Dudley, but returns next month to the streets of Coventry as a live demonstrator of the technology.

The first hydrogen powered train was developed and tested in Warwickshire at the Long Marston Rail Innovation Centre, a joint project between Porterbrook and the University of Birmingham BCRRE. Together with these innovations and a rail supply chain here that includes venerable names like Oleo International in Exhall, and newer names like Flexicon in Coleshill, Coventry & Warwickshire continues to play an important part in the Rail 200 story past, present and future. The area is also home to two rail freight hubs at Dordon and Hams Hall, and new parkway stations are planned at Rugby and Nuneaton. The county is also carrying much of the Midlands HS2 construction south of Birmingham.

Porterbrook is a technology and rolling stock leasing company, which owns about a quarter of the UK’s rolling stock, leasing out train carriages to train operating companies like Chiltern and Cross Country. Porterbrook is based in Derby but since 2021 has run the 135 acre, rail-linked Long Marston Rail Innovation Centre near Stratford-upon-Avon, where it has invested up to £75m in purchasing the site in 2024, and upgrading facilities, including electrification of the 3.5km test loop.

The Long Marston site, formerly known as the Quinton Rail Technology Centre, has been the home of Rail Live since it moved from Network Rail’s Westwood Training Centre over 10 years ago. It is just one of a number of trade shows and conferences held every year in the city and county, and benefiting the wider visitor economy, which attracts some 20m visitors to the city and county every year, and is a major employer and driver of the local economy in itself.

In total more than 300 exhibitors will be at Rail Live, while a wide range of speakers will also be in attendance, representing various sectors of the industry. Speakers include the Rail Minister, Lordy Hendy, and Network Rail Chief Executive, Sir Andrew Haines.

The Rail Minister will be discussing the role of government in supporting the railway as it takes train operating companies in-house and sets up Great British Railways. Meanwhile Haines, who announced in March he was retiring from his position at Network Rail in October, will be discussing rail reform which will include the roadmap for change in the industry.

Network Rail is preparing two villages for this year’s Rail Live. The UK’s infrastructure owner will have On- and Off-track villages at the two-day. Sustainability is a key feature of this year’s Rail Live, and Network Rail will also have a dedicated exhibit in the Sustainability Zone.

Care for the carers in your business

1 in 7 in your workforce will be caring for someone who is older, disabled or seriously ill. Find how you can support them this Carers Week 2025

Monday 9 June 2025 marks the start of Carers Week, a national campaign to raise awareness of the challenges unpaid carers face and to recognise the vital contribution they make. This year’s theme, ‘Caring About Equality’, highlights the inequalities that carers experience and calls for action to ensure they have equal access to support in work, health, and life.

In Warwickshire, tens of thousands of people provide unpaid care to a loved one who could not manage without their help. Many of these carers are also in employment. Balancing work with caring responsibilities can be physically and emotionally demanding. Without the right support, many carers are forced to reduce their hours or leave work altogether, which can lead to financial hardship and lost talent for employers.

Employers in Warwickshire have a unique opportunity to support staff who are carers and help reduce the inequalities they face. By fostering a carer-friendly workplace, employers can improve staff wellbeing, retention, and productivity.

How businesses can make a difference

  • Start the conversation: Use Carers Week to raise awareness about caring roles and encourage staff to identify themselves as carers.
  • Promote flexibility: Offer flexible working arrangements, carer’s leave, and understanding line management to help carers balance their responsibilities.
  • Signpost support: Share information about Employers for Carers, which provides practical tools and guidance for supporting working carers.
  • Connect with local services: Warwickshire residents can access the Carers Wellbeing Service, which offers emotional support, advice, and help navigating local resources.

Caring Together Warwickshire offers dedicated support to employers who want to become more carer friendly. Through their Carer Friendly Employer Programme, they provide guidance on developing carer policies, training for managers, and practical advice on identifying and supporting carers in the workplace. By working with them, you can create a more inclusive environment that recognises and values the contribution of carers—helping your organisation retain skilled staff and promote equality at work.

By supporting carers in your workforce, you’re not only helping individuals, you’re also building a more inclusive and resilient workplace for everyone.

You can find out more about Employers for Carers by visiting their website: https://www.employersforcarers.org/

Local support is also available for carers living in Warwickshire. Find out more by visiting www.warwickshire.gov.uk/carers

New lease of life for farm in country park

"The transformation of Broomey Croft Farm is a real credit to the dedication and vision of our Country Parks team, who have worked tirelessly to breathe new life into this site and create the fantastic premises we see today."

A former children’s farm in North Warwickshire is set for a new lease of life as a destination for dogs and their owners.

Broomey Croft Farm in Kingsbury will be transformed into a canine centre providing a new dog-friendly haven in the area. It will feature dog exercising paddocks, walking routes, a farm shop selling local produce and will also be home to dog training business K9 Solutions.

The new canine centre will be run by Jarryd Bassett and Nathaniel Lewis after they signed a 10-year letting agreement for the land with Warwickshire County Council, through its managing agent Warwickshire Property Management Ltd (WPM).

Nathaniel owns and runs K9 Solutions and the dog training business is already operating from the farm, while work gets underway to create the new canine centre. Jarryd and Nathaniel will also continue to operate the land as a working farm and have previous experience of managing smallholdings.

The pair are in the process of renovating the farmhouse on the site and will then set about work that will prepare the farm for visits from members of the public. Plans include building turning paddocks in the fields for dog exercising, which will benefit dogs that get stressed on walks and who struggle with walking anxiety. The new coffee and farm shops are anticipated to be welcoming their first customers by the end of the summer.

The coffee shop will include a space available for local community groups to hire and the shop will sell produce from Broomey Croft Farm and other farms in the local area.

Jarryd said: “Our goal when everything is up and running is to have a space for all of the local community to visit, with a focus on providing a safe and dog-friendly environment. We have lots of exciting plans in the works, including weekend fayres for local businesses and creators, and days where we encourage dog owners with specific breeds to visit us.

“We are working hard to get the farm in a position to open it back up to the public, after previously being a popular children’s farm, and we hope to be able to welcome our first visitors in the summer.”

Nathaniel added: “The coffee shop will be the first part that we open on the site, but we are already running the dog training business from the farm.

“It’s a brilliant space with a lot of potential. It’s a great location with good transport connections, meaning we are easy to reach whether bringing your dog to a training session, visiting for a cup of coffee in a relaxing setting or enjoying a walk around the site. This will be a business and attraction rooted in the local community.”

WPM is part of Warwickshire Property & Development Group (WPDG), which manages lettings on hundreds of Warwickshire County Council-owned properties.

Mandeep Padan, Asset Manager at WPDG, said: “When we went out to market with the opportunity to lease this farm, we were looking for tenants that would embrace the local community and bring something new to the area.

“Jarryd and Nathaniel’s business case is amazing, it really stood out and it was clear to see how passionate they were about their plans for Broomey Croft Farm. We’re pleased to have worked with them to complete the lease agreement and play a part in the bright new future of the farm.”

Mark Ryder, Strategic Director for Communities at Warwickshire County Council, said: “The transformation of Broomey Croft Farm is a real credit to the dedication and vision of our Country Parks team, who have worked tirelessly to breathe new life into this site and create the fantastic premises we see today.

“We’re delighted to have secured tenants who are bringing exciting ideas and a business that not only offers something different for Kingsbury Water Park, but also connects with the local community. We’re proud to see this site being given a new lease of life as a destination that welcomes dogs, their owners, and all visitors looking to enjoy what our park has to offer.”

Pathway revealed to prestigious KAE

Fifty-eight business leaders from across Warwickshire and the West Midlands came together at the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) in Coventry for ‘A Guide To The King’s Award for Enterprise,’ a half-day event aimed at guiding companies through the application process for the UK’s most prestigious business honour.

Hosted in partnership with the Lieutenancies of Warwickshire and the West Midlands, and organised by Warwickshire County Council and the Coventry & Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce, the event provided practical insights and step-by-step guidance on how to apply for The King’s Awards for Enterprise (KAE).

These annual awards, which recognise exceptional achievement in Innovation, International Trade, Sustainable Development and Promoting Opportunity (through social mobility), represent the highest accolade that a UK business can receive.

Attendees were welcomed to the world-class MTC venue, where they participated in breakout sessions tailored to each award category, engaged in Q&A discussions with past winners and expert advisors, and enjoyed valuable networking opportunities. Representatives from several well-known and aspiring companies, including ANT Industries Ltd,  Fosse Way Brewing Company Ltd,  and The Forge Nuneaton Ltd took part in the event, with many expressing an intent to apply for the 2026 awards.

The Lord-Lieutenant of Warwickshire, Tim Cox emphasised the significance of the awards:

“The King’s Award for Enterprise is not only a symbol of excellence - it’s a statement to the world that your business is among the very best," he said. "It brings with it pride, credibility, and international recognition. I encourage every eligible business in our region to consider applying. As we saw in previous years, Warwickshire has what it takes to lead the way.”

In 2024, eight Warwickshire companies received King’s Awards, the highest number in the county’s history. These included:

Innovation

·                 3D Technologies - one of only five companies in the UK to receive two awards.

·                 Aston Martin Lagonda

·                 Multifleet Vehicle Management

·                 Ryse 3D

International Trade

·                 3D Technologies

·                 Arrowsmith Engineering

Promoting Opportunity

·                 Nuneaton Signs

Sustainable Development

·                 Triton Showers

With applications for the 2026 King’s Awards closing in September, the event provided timely advice and support to help businesses prepare strong submissions.

Dynamic business base for Fusiliers Way

Plans to create a dynamic new commercial hub in Warwickshire - as part of a wider regeneration scheme - were showcased at a major property forum in May.

Warwickshire Property & Development Group (WPDG), Warwickshire County Council's arms-length property development company, exhibited its vision for Fusiliers Way, located between Leamington Spa and Warwick, at UKREiiF in Leeds.

The Fusiliers Way proposal was central to WPDG’s promotional activity at UKREiiF, where it joined forces with Warwickshire County Council as one of the authority’s official partners.

The scheme would see the development of 16 units across 43,000 sq ft of commercial space to support SMEs and local businesses. Fifteen of the business units would range from 1,000 sq ft to 3,500 sq ft. The application, which has been submitted to Warwick District Council, also features the footprint for a larger 15,000 sq ft building.

Fusiliers Way aims to deliver high quality, sustainable and energy efficient units, built to BREEAM Very Good and EPC A standards.

Stuart Buckley, Managing Director at WPDG, said: “After the success of our Sucham Park scheme in Southam we are pressing forward with a pipeline of sites that can provide high-quality space to support SMEs to grow and thrive in Warwickshire. We are expecting to start work this summer on our scheme at Fusiliers Way, which is part of a wider masterplan to create a mixed-use community in the area.

“Alongside our successful joint ventures, we are ramping up WPDG-led activity at two residential sites in the region– with two further direct delivery sites set to come through over the coming months. This means we are in a great position to meet with potential residential development partners and occupiers for our upcoming commercial schemes - and it was great to do this at UKREiiF.”

If approved, phase one of Fusiliers Way will provide purpose-built space for expanding businesses and start-ups in the area and help to create in the region of 85 jobs. The second phase would seek to deliver a local centre to support the area’s growing neighbourhood and business community, including a convenience store, children’s day nursery and coffee shop.

WPDG was formed in 2021 and is delivering projects to realise the value and economic impact of Warwickshire County Council assets for the benefit of residents in Warwickshire. Its first commercial development, a 42,200 sq ft industrial scheme in Southam, completed last year and is now 100 per cent let.

The Group is also delivering around 2,000 homes through its Develop Warwickshire joint venture with Vistry Group and WCC, and its own direct delivery.

Encouraging growth figures for first quarter

Business leaders in Coventry and Warwickshire say the economic growth figures for the first three months of the year will boost confidence – but don’t mask the issues that firms across the region are facing.

The latest GDP figures – the measure of economic output – showed the UK economy grew by 0.7 per cent in the first quarter of 2025.

Corin Crane, chief executive of the Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce, reflected on the better-than-anticipated figures.

He said: “Few were forecasting such a strong start to the year and just seeing those growth figures will provide a lift after a long period of uncertainty and a very flat economic picture. However, we are now into the middle of May and I know from speaking to firms across the region that there all sorts of concerns around the cost of doing business and what impact weeks of instability around tariffs might have caused.

“Fundamentally, we’ve got a really strong economy in Coventry and Warwickshire thanks to the fact we have got an incredible mix of businesses of all sizes and sectors, many of which are perfectly placed to meet the challenges of the future head on.

“But they need the foundations from which to grow and if decision-makers can finally start to create a stable platform that encourages trade at home and abroad, then hopefully Coventry and Warwickshire companies can reap the benefit of that. That, in turn, would be great news for everyone in the city and the county because business growth should provide a boost to every community in the region.”

Stuart Morrison, Research Manager at the British Chambers of Commerce said: “Better than expected Q1 growth of 0.7 per cent is evidence that the UK economy held up well at the start of the year, despite mounting headwinds. Strong performances in the services and production sectors are particularly welcome. However, context is crucial, as we’ve yet to see data showing the impact of the national insurance hike or the global tariff war."

Special Feature

BFRS bringing veterans' skills into civilian life

“Eighty per cent of exhibitors at our events have experience of life in the Armed Forces so can relate to people having been in their position."

A Social Enterprise based at the Centenary Business Centre, Nuneaton, is supplying a crucial bridge for veterans to cross from service in the armed forces to work in civilian life.

From its home at the Warwickshire County Council-run centre, British Forces Resettlement Services (BFRS) works in support of the Armed Forces Community (AFC). Their primarily social objective is to work as the focal point between the AFC and commercial businesses, helping the AFC to engage face-to-face and digitally with companies across the UK, to ensure the right help, support, and advice is provided when moving into future careers.

“Those considering leaving the Armed Forces, those in transition to civvy street, veterans, reservists and military families are very welcome,” said James Graham BFRS General Manager and veteran. “It’s about providing networking opportunities and making people comfortable about the transition process, bridging the gap between the Armed Forces Community and businesses that are keen to offer employment and training opportunities. As well as running career fairs we have a website www.bfrs.org.uk  that provides that online connection to Armed Forces friendly businesses. On this platform you can search by sector or business, upload your CV, book onto events and read success stories.”

From their Nuneaton base, BFRS operates on a national basis, holding careers fairs and workshops across the country to allow face to face networking opportunities. They show members of the Armed Forces Community – service personnel, reservists, veterans and military families – the opportunities that exist while enabling employers to understand the range of skills that former Armed Forces personnel can bring to businesses.

“At each event we explore the skills needed to get into employment,” said James Graham. “For example, we hold CV workshops - in the military you will probably never have to create a CV until you leave. We offer coaching through that transition with support from businesses that are Armed Forces friendly.

“Eighty per cent of exhibitors at our events have experience of life in the Armed Forces so can relate to people having been in their position.  As a veteran they can say, ‘this is what I did’ and that is so important because it help them navigate the transition. The careers fairs are quite an eye-opening experience for the Armed Forces Community because, they often don’t realise the options available to them and how sought after they are”

“It’s a question of understanding how their military skills can translate into a civilian role. For example, if someone’s been in the Royal Logistics Corps and have experience in operations, stock control, stock movement and driving we can direct them towards the relevant civilian employers. We work with businesses from all sectors even those in the design and manufacturing of drones.”

In Warwickshire, BFRS is working with Warwickshire Skills Hub whose Business Skills Support Advisor, Heather Docksey, said: “The Skills Hub is proud to work with BFRS and the great work they do to make sure that the many skills that veterans have match up to the needs of employers. We have attended jobs fairs in Kineton and Nuneaton and have a veteran contact point at Nuneaton.

"Former service personnel are very much part of the Fair Chance Employment programme and its Jobs Portal for Warwickshire. The Armed Forces Veteran community is one of our priority groups.

“It’s clear from our conversations with employers within Warwickshire that they are really keen to talk to veterans and the armed forced community because they know the skills they have and that is something we want to build on.”

Warwickshire Women in Engineering 2025

“Within rail there are so many different roles”

“Within rail there are so many different roles you can do...and there is absolutely no reason why all those options are not there for women."

Railways in the UK have a glorious past and an exciting, fast-evolving future – Anna Gray is fascinated by the former and proud to be part of latter.

Anna is currently on secondment as a Fleet Asset Manager at Derby-based Porterbrook which owns about a quarter of the UK’s rolling stock and leases this out to train operating companies like Chiltern and Cross Country. It is a role which offers many challenges: principally matching up that evolving future to a rail infrastructure which was mostly built in the 19th century.

There is a fair bit of problem-solving…which makes it very rewarding.

“Our rail infrastructure was built in Victorian times so it's very tucked in with small bridges,” said Anna. “That means we are restricted by the size of trains and amount of track, and with freight and passengers sharing the same infrastructure, it can be very congested.

I am in a large fleet team of forty which supports the depots and the operators, looking at new modifications, assessing risk and helping performance improvements. It's very challenging, but that's what engineering is - finding a solution to a problem, whether it's a strategic solution, a technical solution, a people solution or a project solution.”

By finding those solutions, Anna is helping to shape the future of rail, although she also still has an involvement in that wonderful history.  She has volunteered on Talyllyn Steam Railway, in Snowdonia since the age of six.

Her interest in rail was sparked very early and then stoked by an engineering degree at the University of Birmingham.

“At school I really enjoyed maths and science and problem-solving,” said Anna. “I wasn’t sure specifically what I wanted to do but I knew I liked the challenges of finding solutions to problems. I did a Mechanical Engineering degree and Masters at Birmingham and with the Masters I did an industrial placement which was really helpful. Degree study involves a lot of theory so it was great to see that theory applied in practice. Porterbrook offered me a graduate role and I loved it and my career has grown from there.”

Though based in Derby, Porterbrook also has a significant presence in Warwickshire. Since 2021, the company has run the 135-acre Long Marston Rail Innovation Centre near Stratford-upon-Avon, where it invested up to £75m in purchasing the site in 2024.

Anna has found the rail sector very welcoming with a vast array of opportunities open to all.

“Within rail there are so many different roles you can do,” she said. “There’s the structural side and the operational side and it opens up so many doors. There are so many options all the time and there is absolutely no reason why all those options are not there for women.

“It is still a little bit male-dominated but that’s because it has historically been that way.  It is changing and that is great because the more women and the more people with diverse ethnicity and backgrounds we have in the industry the better: Everyone brings different perspectives. There are so many new things coming in, you can't just apply the traditional. The industry is evolving so rapidly that diversity of thought has never been more needed. The more diversity of thought you bring in, the better chance of findings solutions. We need more diversity.

“There is also a succession of women building careers in the sector and that’s another really good thing about the rail industry.”

Anna strongly recommends the sector as a potential career offering great opportunity and also camaraderie

“There is a lot of support and help available for people coming into the industry with organisations like Women in Rail and Young Rail Professionals,” she said. “They are great because members come from different companies but everyone gets together for socials, lectures and tours which bring people in the rail industry together.

“It’s been a big help. If you ever need support there are people out there in similar positions. Everyone is just so supportive of each other.”

Victoria's role keeps the community moving

“I can physically see on street the improvements that I’ve been involved in delivering."

“It’s very rewarding because I feel that I’m doing something for the community,” says Victoria Geffert of her role as Principal Transport Planner at Warwickshire County Council.

Victoria’s engineering background and qualifications are put to the most practical uses in her work for the Transport and Highways department of the council. Engineering is a broad church with many and varied directions in which you can go – in her case, the chosen direction is transport and it’s one she much enjoys.

“I’ve always had an interest in transport,” Victoria said. “I think with Coventry being a motor city and my grandparents and dad working in car manufacturing, transport was always in my blood.

“I studied Transport Design at Coventry University and intended to go into the car industry but at the time I graduated there wasn’t the recruitment drive like we see at JLR now. I went to a Jobs Fair by Jacobs Babtie as they were known then, and they accepted me on to a graduate scheme for transport planning - and that’s what I have continued with ever since.”

Through Jacobs, Victoria was seconded to Coventry City Council for 18 months and Transport for London for six months, gathering the experience and knowledge which is now benefiting travellers across Warwickshire.

“When I started at the County Council, I worked for the County Highways team as a highway’s maintenance delivery engineer," she said. "This job included being out on the road marking out highway for patching and surface dressing. I worked closely with the highway’s maintenance contractor, Balfour Beatty to ensure highway works were undertaken safely in accordance with the New Roads and Street Works Act. Now my role is strategic rather than design and delivery but still with an engineering cap on.

“I am currently in a small team of Transport Planners that looks at bus infrastructure improvements as part of the County Council’s Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP). We undertake the preliminary work to identify upgrades to bus stops, provide signal priority at junctions, and improve bus services generally through better buses, better management of roadworks etc. My team do the scoping, business case writing, and pre-planning work. We also liaise with councillors and ensure we have their backing before we go out and engage with the public.’’

“My job is very rewarding because I can physically see on street the improvements that I’ve been involved in delivering. I can pick out things that benefit the community and say, ‘I did that red route’ and ‘I did those drop kerbs’ and show my children.

Victoria strongly recommends engineering as a career option, especially for those with a passion for making a difference in their local community.

“You have to be a certain type of person,” she said. “You have to be interested in public affairs in your local area and want to do good. This role enables me to do that.”

The Real Apprentice...

"Without construction, there’d be no houses, hospitals, roads or schools. No offices, factories, shopping centres or warehouses. Come to think of it, there wouldn’t be much at all."

One of the leading female figures in UK construction and civil engineering has launched a new initiative to highlight the range of roles on offer to apprentices, by telling the stories of those already inside the industry.

Julie White, the managing director of Warwickshire-based D-Drill & Sawing and the chair of Build UK, is speaking to apprentices within her own company and others across the supply chain to showcase the wide range of opportunities that construction offers.

Julie has been an advocate for training and apprenticeships for well over a decade, with D-Drill’s team being made up of more than 80 per cent of staff who have been through an apprenticeship. Julie, herself, has also completed one!

Now, in her new web-based feature called ‘The Real Apprentice – You Are Hired’, Julie is putting a spotlight on real people in the industry.

She said: “Anyone who knows me, knows I’m passionate about two things! The wonderful world of construction – and bringing through the next generation of workers.  Construction and the very niche industry of diamond drilling and concrete sawing have been part of my life from since I can remember as my dad, Peter, ran D-Drill for many years having started the business in 1967 before I bought the company in 2008. I think that’s why it’s so embedded in my life.

“Yes, D-Drill is my business but the reason it gets me out of bed every day is I know what we are doing has a positive impact on the world. Without construction, there’d be no houses, hospitals, roads or schools. No offices, factories, shopping centres or warehouses. Come to think of it, there wouldn’t be much at all. That is why I have thrown myself into supporting the industry and speaking out for it whenever I can and, hence, why I am so proud to be chair of Build UK during its tenth anniversary year.

“Build UK is the largest trade body for the whole industry, covering tier one contractors through to associations covering individual, specialist trades within the sector. One of the biggest issues that has been identified across construction is the need for more people to come into the industry – 50,000 new entrants a year, in fact. That is why Build UK staged Open Doors, where sites and places of work opened up to the public in March, and that is why I am so proud that we attracted more than 7,000 visitors across the country.

“It’s also why I’ve decided to pursue some great stories of my own by talking to apprentices at different stages of their career in the industry in a new series called: The Real Apprentice – You Are Hired!

“I’ve been chatting to some of D-Drill’s own apprentices but also hearing from people at other companies in the industry to find out why they decided this was the path they wanted to take, how they are finding it and what their aspirations are for the future.”

Warwickshire winners in esteemed awards

Warwickshire expertise was to the fore when the county had the honour of hosting the Autocar (Haymarket) Great Women in Automotive Awards 2025.  The event, held at Horiba MIRA in Nuneaton, shone a spotlight on the most promising female talent in the UK automotive industry.
In partnership with the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), the event celebrated 79 exceptional women across nine diverse categories, showcasing the breadth of expertise and leadership shaping the future of mobility.
This year’s awards highlighted the achievements of women working in a wide array of roles, from logistics and manufacturing to marketing and sales, at leading companies such as BMW Group, JLR, and Renault Group UK. Each of the nine categories crowned a winner, with all nominees recognised as outstanding contributors to their fields.
The four Warwickshire winners were:
  • Nash Varcas, Senior Aerodynamicist, Aston Martin Lagonda - Vehicle Development category
  • Shani Roberts, Business Partner, Skills, HORIBA MIRA - Talent category
  • Natalie Dowsett, Co-founder and COO, Ox Delivers - Operations category
  • Loretta Dittrich, GME Logistics Director, JLR - minner Manufacturing category
Chloe Millage, Careers Service Team Manager at Warwickshire Skills Hub and Careers Hub, said: “The Great Women in Automotive Awards 2025 was an inspiring event and it was brilliant to see four awards won by women from our county. This fully deserved recognition is testament to their skills and passion for their work and shows that it is yet another sector in which Warwickshire is truly punching its weight.”
A standout feature of the event was the Apprentice category, which honoured 32 rising stars at the beginning of their careers. This initiative reflects the industry’s commitment to nurturing talented young women and ensuring a pipeline of skilled professionals for the future.
The event featured keynote speeches and panel discussions from influential figures including Sarah Windrum (Head of Cluster Development, Horiba MIRA). Nicole Melillo Shaw (Managing Director, Volvo Car UK) , Diane Miller (Director of Parts Distribution, Stellantis) , Lorraine Bishton (Managing Director, Subaru UK) and Renee Knott (Head of Project Management, Aston Martin).
The Autocar Great Women initiative continues to play a vital role in promoting gender diversity in a traditionally male-dominated industry. By celebrating the achievements of these rising stars, the event not only honours individual excellence but also encourages a more inclusive and innovative future for the automotive world.

From Stratford to San Francisco: a niche PR Agency with global impact

It is remarkable how many small Warwickshire businesses operate on a global level. Among these is Stratford-upon-Avon-based Transmission PR. It has been quite a journey for founder Aby Hawker since an unexpected email landed in her inbox and professional curiosity evolved into passionate advocacy

It was a typical evening in my Warwickshire village home when I refreshed my emails at around 8pm. What appeared there was anything but ordinary - there in my inbox sat an inquiry from a leading San Francisco healthcare provider seeking specialist PR support, despite being located 5,270 miles away from my small startup agency.

This long-distance outreach wasn't coincidental. TransMission PR occupies a distinctive space in the communications landscape, specialising in transgender and non-binary inclusion and awareness. We partner with organisations committed to genuine inclusivity for gender-diverse communities, ensuring their approach and language authentically reflect best practice - and taking away the fear which so often leads to the subject being dismissed or being pushed so far down the to-do list that it never gets addressed.

My journey into this specialist field began a decade ago - not as a member of the transgender community myself, but as a communications professional with a commitment to addressing unmet needs. When I was offered an in-house role with a gender-affirming healthcare provider, I embraced the opportunity despite having no prior experience with issues impacting the transgender community. What began as professional curiosity evolved into passionate advocacy.

Working closely with the transgender community revealed profound systemic barriers: multi-year waiting lists for initial consultations, physicians practicing without adequate training due to curriculum gaps, and alarming rates of mental health struggles. The most striking realisation was that these challenges stemmed not from individuals' gender identity but from societal rejection and institutional failures.

I quickly realised that this was fundamentally a human issue, the infrastructure simply wasn't there to support the basic needs of this community - and people were suffering as a direct result.

After six years immersing myself in the field, I recognised the opportunity to create broader impact beyond a single organisation. TransMissionPR launched with a commitment to authentic representation in 2021, building a team that includes transgender and non-binary consultants who ensure our work remains grounded in lived experience.

Today, our client roster spans multiple sectors. We work with:

  • Trans specific healthcare providers: raising awareness of their important work.
  • Hospitality and fashion brands: creating visibility and providing guidance on  trans-inclusive policies
  • Charitable organisations: enhancing their reach and amplifying their messaging
  • NHSE: delivering specialist training
  • Cultural institutions: including our work on Trafalgar Square's fourth plinth installation, which has been described as "a monument to the transgender community"

As businesses increasingly recognise that true inclusivity encompasses all identities, TransMission PR stands ready with specialist expertise that's proven invaluable across continents. Our journey from a Warwickshire village to international consultancy demonstrates how addressing specific community needs can create both social impact and business success.

When your organisation is ready to ensure its approach to gender diversity reflects best practices, remember there is expertise available that can help you to navigate these often challenging waters.

Talk Up Our Towns

Vision for Warwick

"Warwick has a resilient local economy and – as this Vision shows – a passionate and committed community that is ready to work together to make our town even better."

An ambitious vision for ways to improve Warwick town centre has been officially launched, along with a comprehensive action plan that aims to improve the town for generations to come.

Warwick Town Council has drawn up the Vision and action plan for 2024-2030 in a bid to ensure Warwick remains a viable and sustainable town centre in the face of ongoing challenges for local towns and the wider economy.

The Vision is the result of a series of consultations by the Town Council with stakeholders including local businesses and Warwick Chamber of Trade as well as residents and community groups.

Three stages of engagement revealed perceived strengths and weaknesses of Warwick as a town, as well as suggestions for how they could be addressed. The resulting information has now been compiled and combined with wider information and research on town centres to help form the Warwick Town Vision Plan.

The plan was drawn up by Warwick Town Centre Manager Kelly Scott, who was appointed in November 2024 as part of the town council’s ongoing work to coordinate the direction of Warwick and ensure it remains a great place to live, work and visit for the coming years.

Kelly said: “Work on this Warwick Town Vision started before my time here, but I’m delighted to have had the privilege of bringing together extensive consultation with so many stakeholders in the town and turning it into a concrete action plan for how we can make Warwick even better than it already is. The action plan contains a mixture of short, medium and long term activities that address areas highlighted in the consultation and give us tangible ways to build on Warwick’s strengths and address what are perceived by some stakeholders as weaknesses.

“Times are tougher than ever on the high street everywhere, but Warwick has a resilient local economy and – as this Vision shows – a passionate and committed community that is ready to work together to make our town even better.

“Some of the action points have already been started, with plenty more in the pipeline, and we look forward to delivering on what is an ambitious but eminently achievable plan for Warwick up to 2030.”

The Warwick Town Vision has identified four key pillars on which to build the Warwick of the future. They are:

  • A historic and cultured town
  • A connected and happy town
  • A communal and youthful town
  • A vibrant and safe town

The action plan then identifies a number of projects that will help to achieve those, prioritising them into short, medium and long term.

Projects to build on Warwick’s reputation as a historic and cultured town include the development of art and culture initiatives and programmes, as well as effort to better link Warwick Castle to the town centre, and improvements to the public realm.

Activities to promote a connected and happy town include work around accessibility and sustainable transport, as well as improved pathfinding. There are also plans to better use empty spaces and units in the town centre, and to conduct a review of parking provision.

Creating a communal and youthful town will include increasing community and social spaces and engaging with community groups, as well as conducting regular town deep cleans and operating a regular programme of events to bring people into the town centre.

And projects to support the development of a vibrant and safe town will include support for innovation and start-up businesses, as well as encouraging investment and trialling pop-up shops.

Kelly added: “These are just some of the many ideas that make up the Warwick Town Vision and Action Plan, and I’d urge people to look through the whole document, which is the product of months of work by many different people. As a Town Council, we’re fully committed to doing everything we can to make Warwick the best it can be, and we look forward to working with stakeholders and the wider community to bring this Vision to life.”

Plans lodged for £343m mega-park, set to deliver up to 6,000 jobs

A planning application for a £343m employment park in North Warwickshire has been submitted to North Warwickshire Borough Council and Birmingham City Council. The proposal for ‘Thrive’ from IM Properties could create between 4,400 and 6,000 full-time jobs on-site when the site is fully occupied. Comprising 3 million sq ft of industrial space near Curdworth and Junction 9 of the M42, Thrive would be home to highly-skilled sectors such as automotive, aerospace, rail manufacturing, low carbon and digital technologies. A minimum of 30% of the site is being promoted for advanced manufacturing.

Community feedback has shaped early proposals for a 500,000 sq ft employment park in Gaydon, which could create up to 500 jobs. What is in the UK-US tariff deal?

The UK and the US have reached a deal over tariffs on some goods traded between the countries.

President Donald Trump's blanket 10% tariffs on imports from countries around the world still applies to most UK goods entering the US. But the deal has reduced or removed tariffs on some of the UK's exports, including cars, steel and aluminium, but most of the detail has yet to be clarified. Cars are the UK's biggest export to the US - worth about £9bn last year. JLR, which exports almost a quarter of its cars to the US, said the deal "secures greater certainty for our sector". Trump also announced that Rolls-Royce engines and plane parts will be able to be exported from the UK to the US tariff-free.

Aston Martin investors adjust holdings during period of trade turbulance

Two investors in Aston Martin have reduced their stakes in the luxury car manufacturer amid a challenging period. In a filing with the London Stock Exchange, the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund (PIF) dropped its stake from 18% to 16.6%. Shufu Li, the Chinese billionaire founder and chairman of Geeley, cut his stake from 15.2% to 14%. Aston Martin’s chairman Lawrence Stroll is attempting to purchase a further 75 million shares through his investment vehicle Yew Tree Consortium. It would take Yew Tree’s total share capital to 33% and raise £52.5m in gross proceeds for Aston Martin. He was already Aston Martin’s largest shareholder, followed by PIF, Geely and Mercedes Benz.

The Chambers will be looking to gather insights on these topics through their upcoming Quarterly Business Report surveying, as well as focus groups with employers in Greater Birmingham, Coventry and Warwickshire and the Black Country. The Behind the Build report, summarising the findings of the research, will be published in October, at one of the Chamber’s Business Growth Studio events.

Rayner tells property world – we need you to build, build, build

Fresh from meeting the new Pope, Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner told the UKReiiF property and regeneration conference in Leeds in May that she wants to see new entrepreneurial housebuilders and community projects contribute to her “stretching” target of 1.5m homes to be built in the lifetime of this parliament.

UK tops economic leaderboard with stronger-than-expected GDP growth

The UK economy grew faster than expected at the start of this year with a performance that out-paced the rest of the major economies. Official figures showed gross domestic product (GDP) increased by 0.7% in the first quarter, beating economists’ predictions as well as the rest of the G7.

It is also suggests that business confidence was much more resilient than many had expected following the Budget in November, which announced significant increases in employers’ National Insurance. However there are concerns that America’s tariff strategy, and the turmoil that has unleashed on the global economy, will weaken future results.

Sustainable Warwickshire

WBEAS support invaluable to Technoset

"The energy audit unearthed quick and simple ways for a small business to increase it's sustainability whilst at the same time reducing costs."

A precision engineering business in Rugby is making savings and has become a more pleasant environment in which to work after support from the Warwickshire Business Energy Advice Service.
Technoset, in Roman Way, underwent an initial energy audit, conducted by Coventry City Council, which was the start of a process which has proved invaluable to the business, according to managing director Adam Land.
“The audit enabled us to identify which changes we needed to make to the building to improve our EPC rating,” he said. “We were able to understand what the biggest impactors were and also what the opportunities were, so the report was very useful.
"It highlighted the benefits of insulated over cladding of the factory roof and that led to a real improvement not just in terms of energy-efficiency but in working conditions,We are a precision machine shop so making sure that the environment in the factory is stable gives us benefits beyond sustainability. Over the years we have found that the factory gets very hot in the summer and very cold in the winter, so our gas heater is always on and the temperature is fluctuating. That can be quite unpleasant for the staff on the shop floor with machines kicking out heat as well.
“Supported by the WBEAS grant, we took an old gas heater out and improved the air-circulation from the roof down by putting destratification fans into the ceiling to keep pushing the warm air down. They are doing a fantastic job. We’ve upgraded our air-compressor system to be more energy-efficient and have now got modern equipment that is more reliable and makes us more secure.”
A  £71,052 WBEAS grant helped towards the cost of that work which meant that finance was freed up to tackle another project to improve sustainability at the business, which employs 28 people and has been operating in Rugby since 1978.
Warwickshire County Council's Executive Director for Communities, Mark Ryder, said: "I am delighted that the Warwickshire Business Energy Advice Service advice and grant proved so valuable to Technoset. In this case, as with businesses which have engaged with WBEAS across the county, the energy audit unearthed quick and simple ways for a small business to increase it's sustainability whilst at the same time reducing costs."
WBEAS is part of the Business Growth Warwickshire Programme, developed and commissioned jointly by Warwickshire County Council and the five district and borough councils in the county. It is funded by UK Government via West Midlands Combined Authority with further funding from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. Coventry City Council have been appointed to deliver the energy audits after a procurement exercise. Warwickshire County Council manages the BEAS grant scheme.

Efficiency means evolution

“We really appreciate having the grant because without it we wouldn’t have been able to make these changes for another two years."

A Warwickshire electrical contractor has recruited extra staff and transformed its premises after receiving financial support from an energy efficiency programme.

Hertz Electrical was started in 2018 by Andy Wood in Somers Road, Rugby, with four employees to provide electrical installation and maintenance for domestic and commercial customers throughout Coventry and Warwickshire.

The 130 sqm premises were in need of a complete overhaul to take the business to the next level so Andy got in touch with Coventry and Warwickshire Growth Hub to see if there was any support available.

Adam Plumb, who covers Rugby for the Growth Hub, put Andy in touch with the Warwickshire Business Energy Advice Service (WBEAS).

The pilot BEAS programme is being run in the West Midlands through the West Midlands Combined Authority with Warwickshire County Council being allocated £1.25 million, with further funding from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, via Warwickshire’s five District and Borough Councils.

Warwickshire County Council has appointed Coventry City Council to carry out the energy audits and this was completed by Business Energy Adviser Denise Osborne.

That led to Hertz Electrical successfully applying to Warwickshire County Council for a WBEAS grant of £37,561 for a roller shutter door, double glazing, wall insulation, roof insulation, a water heater and voltage optimiser.

Andy Wood, Founder and Director at Hertz Electrical, said a total of £150,000 had been invested to totally upgrade the site which has also led to three new recruits this year – a solar apprentice and two fully-qualified electricians – to take their number of employees to 16.

He said: “Previously, the insulation was non-existent which meant it was always cold even when the heating was on, there was limited desk space and storage space was a struggle. Now, the walls are fully insulated which has made it much warmer, we fitted solar panels ourselves, the water heater has been upgraded, and we now have enough room to store solar panels.

“We have new furniture, carpets and LED lighting and the whole place has been painted so we are feeling more confident about the future.

“We’re in a growing business sector because of the push towards renewables and the changes in technology. Over the last five years there has been so many changes in the industry.

“We really appreciate having the grant because without it we wouldn’t have been able to make these changes for another two years. We needed better premises to support our growth and now we have that.”

Debbie Yates, Business Operations Manager at Hertz Electrical, added: “From an employee’s point of view, the difference it has made to the team is really important as well as potential new clients and employees.

“The team working here feel a sense of pride in their new surroundings and it’s made them excited for the future.”

Adam Plumb, Account Manager at Coventry and Warwickshire Growth Hub, said the high standard of the refurbishment was testament to Andy and his team.

“I can’t believe the difference the grant and the investment by Andy has made to the site, it looks totally different,” he said. "Hertz Electrical has built up a loyal customer base which is split between 40 per cent domestic clients and 60 per cent commercial customers, and this has laid the foundations to expand the business further.”

The grant from the WBEAS has led to savings of 0.701 tonnes of CO2 and £1,292 in energy costs.

David Ayton-Hill, Director of Economy and Place at Warwickshire County Council, said: “Our priority is to support businesses to become more sustainable and the WBEAS audit allows businesses to understand where they can make changes to become more energy efficient.

“It’s great to see the support and impact the WBEAS audit has made to Hertz Electrical, which has led to both energy and cost savings. The audit ticked so many boxes in helping the business to become greener, supporting the business to become more energy efficient while they are also expanding.”

Cllr Louise Robinson, Rugby Borough Council portfolio holder for growth, investment, digital and communications, said: “Energy efficiency has a vital role to play in creating a growing, greener economy and the refit of Hertz Electrical’s premises has supported the firm’s plans for growth, creating new jobs and helping the company compete in the rapidly growing – and changing – renewable energy sector.

“The Warwickshire Business Energy Advice Service, part of our Business Growth Warwickshire programme, has delivered expert advice and grant support to businesses across the county, helping firms take the next step in their plans for growth while saving money on energy bills and playing a part in our greener economy.”

* WBEAS was launched as part of the £4.6 million Business Growth Warwickshire Programme developed and commissioned jointly by Warwickshire County Council and the five district and borough councils in the county, with funding from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and the County Council. The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero is funding an expansion to the service as part of the West Midlands Combined Authority-led pilot.
