WARWICKSHIRE MEANS BUSINESS

Welcome

Welcome from Mark Ryder

Hello and welcome to the July edition of Warwickshire Means Business.

This month we bring the excellent news that £5.6m from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund has now been granted to Warwickshire County Council.

This funding will support local communities, businesses, people and skills and, working in partnership with the District and Borough Councils, Warwickshire County Council will deliver a bottom-up programme to help residents gain new skills and businesses to start, grow and thrive.

The continued UKSPF support for another year allows the County Council to extend the Business Growth Warwickshire programme with its six strands of varied support, and to continue to drive Warwickshire Skills Hub’s range of employment and skills programmes, including Destination Work and the Future Destination Hub.

There are many relevant links in all the WMB articles but please do visit Business Growth Warwickshire to see if we might be able to help your business.

Also in this month’s WMB we hear from the founder of a groundbreaking software company who explains why Coventry & Warwickshire is the perfect place to build an automotive tech business. Our Talk Up Our Towns section features Kenilworth and how historic events there 450 years ago are still benefiting the town’s economy in 2025. We hear how the Hercules Academy and Warwickshire Supported Employment Service have teamed up brilliantly to bring opportunities to those facing barriers to finding work.

Whatever your needs in terms of business and skills support. there is almost certainly a programme which could help. As Leamington hairdresser Keri Chimes puts it in this edition, after her business benefited from the Skills Escalator, “There is so much business support out there in Warwickshire and it’s not something you get in every county. We are really lucky and I would encourage every small business to see how they could benefit."

All this in the July WMB, plus the customary comprehensive round-ups of local news-in-brief and upcoming events. Enjoy - and please do get in touch if we can help your business!

Funding announced to support communities, growth and skills.

"Working in partnership with the District and Borough council’s we want to create improved economic opportunities for our residents.”

The £5.6m UKSPF fund supporting local communities, businesses, people and skills, has now been granted to Warwickshire County Council.

As part of this next phase of funding, greater control is given to Warwickshire to deliver a programme that is based on local requirements. Working in partnership with the District and Borough Councils, Warwickshire County Council will deliver a bottom-up programme for residents to gain new skills, support businesses to start and grow and improve.

The purpose of the UKSPF fund is to support three investment priorities, allowing Warwickshire to:

  • Invest in place-based regeneration and community infrastructure.
  • Support local businesses with tailored growth and innovation programmes.
  • Deliver skills and employment support that meets the needs of residents and employers.

The continuation of UKSPF for another year has allowed the County Council to extend the Business Growth Warwickshire Programme and a range of Warwickshire Skills Hub’s employment and skills programmes.

The District and Borough Councils are leading on the delivery of the communities and place activities with each district and borough council having been awarded its own allocation of funding. The County Council is also delivering some additional communities and place activities at the local level.

Councillor George Finch, Leader of Warwickshire County Council, said: “We are pleased to begin this next phase of the UKSPF funding. Our focus is to deliver a programme to support and develop Warwickshire’s communities, businesses and skills. Working in partnership with the District and Borough council’s we want to create improved economic opportunities for our residents.”

Following the devolution agreement with central government, Warwickshire County Council now holds direct responsibility for planning and delivering the UKSPF from April 2025. This change will allow:

Local management: The Council will lead on the coordination of the UKSPF investments and help maximise the benefits across the county, supporting the delivery of ambitious, inclusive and sustainable growth for Warwickshire.

Integrated skills delivery: Warwickshire County Council will lead on the delivery of this priority, allowing greater control to create a framework that is based upon local need. From August 2026, the Council will also take over the Adult Skills Fund, enabling a more joined-up approach to skills, employment, and economic development. In the lead-up, UKSPF-funded Employment & Skills projects will play a vital role in laying the groundwork for this transition, helping to scale up local provision and build momentum for future investment.

Capital Investment boost: The 2025–26 transition year includes a £0.97 million capital grant, part of a total £5.27 million UKSPF allocation, to support small-scale infrastructure investments and regeneration projects. The County Council has also been awarded a further £453,161 of capital funding from the Rural England Prosperity Fund. The County Council will be using this grant to establish a grant scheme for rural businesses in North Warwickshire and Stratford District later and to support additional communities and place activities.

Escalator support takes Headmasters offer to a new level

“There is so much business support out there in Warwickshire and it’s not something you get in every county. We are really lucky and I would encourage every small business to see how they could benefit."

A Warwickshire hairdresser has urged all small businesses in the county to seek out business support after her staff “benefited hugely” from the Skills Escalator programme.
Keri Chimes owns Headmasters which has been at the heart of its community in Clemens Street, Leamington, since her dad set it up in 1984.  Now under Keri’s control, Headmasters is going from strength to strength – chiefly thanks to her team’s skills and hard work, of course, but also, in part, to business support.
Several of Keri’s 11-strong workforce attended specialist courses to hone their skills thanks to the Skills Escalator Fund, delivered by Warwickshire Skills Hub and funded by UKSPF in partnership with the county’s district and borough councils, in the case of Headmasters, Warwick District Council.
“The Escalator funding enabled me to send some of our staff on quite hefty courses,” she said. “Training courses can run into thousands of pounds. For example, one of our stylists went for hair system training, which means we can now deal with a lot of clients with hair loss - males and females. The course was nearly £2,000 which would have been a big outlay for me so for the funding to give me a substantial amount towards that was brilliant.
“Another team member has always wanted to specialise in Afro-Caribbean and different types of curly hair. They went on a specialist course to London for three days and with the accommodation as well we couldn’t have done it without some support. The knowledge they collected during the course has empowered the team to better advise customers and bring them joy. People do get a lot of pleasure from their hair - we have some lovely feedback.”
Such support can be a massive help and Keri urges all small businesses to look into what Warwickshire County Council and their partners across the county and region can offer.
“There is so much business support out there in Warwickshire and it’s not something you get in every county,” she said. “We are really lucky and I would encourage every small business to see how they could benefit. I know it would be fantastic for some businesses but they just don’t know about it.
“I spoke to a lovely lady called Laura Delahunty from Coventry & Warwickshire Growth Hub who took me through all the different funding options. There are loads of different teams and funding streams that I had no knowledge of.
“Without the funding, this training for my staff wouldn’t have taken place and the knock-on effect is that those stylists are able to generate bigger income for their time and offer a better service to their community. They also offer services that not every business offers so the business is more sustainable.”
That means everybody benefits: employees, whose livelihoods are protected; customers who get the best possible services; and the local economy and the communities they serve.
“Clemens Street is such a lovely community,” said Keri. “Everybody cares around here, it’s really friendly and everyone chats and says hello. There’s a real community spirit here, as I’m sure there is in neighbourhoods all around Warwickshire, so the support which helps businesses to flourish is so important because it really makes a difference to our towns. My staff are building their skills so one day might be able to go to Warwick or somewhere else and generate a good income. And when I don’t want to be behind a chair any more and move into business management, hopefully they will be ready to take more control.”
Louise Stolz, Future Skills Business Support Advisor at Warwickshire Skills Hub, said: “I am delighted that the Skills Escalator support has been of such high value to Keri and her team and that, with the level of training undertaken, that value will only increase as time passes. At Headmasters, it’s about more than just hair - it’s about helping clients relax and unwind while building a stronger, more skilled team ready to deliver high quality service for years to come."

Tour of Britain returns to Warwickshire this September

Warwickshire is set to take centre stage in the UK’s premier cycling race this September, as Stage Four of the Lloyds Tour of Britain Men arrives in the county on Friday 5 September 2025.

The route will showcase the very best of Warwickshire, passing through all five districts and boroughs. The race will begin in Atherstone and finish at the scenic Burton Dassett Hills Country Park, attracting cycling fans, media and teams from across the country and beyond.

The event brings more than just sporting prestige. It represents a significant opportunity for the local economy, especially for retail, hospitality and tourism businesses along the route. Previous stages of the Tour have seen spikes in footfall, spend, and visibility for local businesses. With analysis showing that £1.263 billion is spent annually in Warwickshire as a result of tourism, supporting over 22,500 jobs, the Tour is expected to provide a welcome boost.

Given the opportunities available, Warwickshire is gearing up and encouraging local businesses to plan ahead and take advantage of the increased visitor numbers. That might include themed displays, promotions, or extended opening hours. Look out for more resources and guidance in the run-up to the event to help you maximise your involvement.

Of course, a major event of this scale does mean there will be some disruption to ensure that the race is safe for riders and spectators. There will be rolling road closures on most of the 140-mile route, with fixed road closures limited to the start and finish. Full details will be shared at: https://www.warwickshire.gov.uk/cycletour closer to the time to allow you to prepare and plan accordingly.

An event like this is a great opportunity to think about whether you can use the Tour as a springboard to support healthier travel within your organisation. If you’d like to find out more, then have a look at the Love to Ride platform, which provides inspiration and practical advice for Warwickshire businesses who want to encourage more staff to travel by bike, whether for commuting, leisure, or short trips. Or take a look at our Workplace Active Travel programme, which offers advice, guidance and cycling workshops:  https://www.warwickshire.gov.uk/workplaceactivetravel

Finally, for anyone inspired to explore more of the county, the Visit Warwickshire website is a brilliant one-stop shop for ideas on where to go and what to do: https://visit.warwickshire.gov.uk

Whether you’re a business owner, cycling fan or proud resident, there are plenty of ways to get involved. If you’d like to explore those with us, get in touch via towns@warwickshire.gov.uk. Let’s make the most of the spotlight this September, and show what Warwickshire has to offer.

Battery boost for Warwickshire and the West Midlands

"DRIVE 35 will fund a wide spectrum of projects which help the transition to zero-emission vehicle manufacturing."

July saw a number of strands of activity focused on the UK battery supply chain come together in the West Midlands and the wider UK.

The Battery Cells & Systems Expo took place at the NEC in Birmingham, combining an exhibition and conference around battery supply chain and vehicle electrification, attracting over 5,000 delegates and 300 exhibitors over two days of conferencing.

The UK Government also launched the new Industrial Strategy, underpinned by eight Sector Plans, including one around Advanced Manufacturing, and its Automotive strand. As part of the Industrial Strategy, the UK Government has committed £452m to a new Battery Innovation Programme aimed at supporting the commercialisation of next-generation battery technologies, for applications including transport. This will accelerate battery research, innovation and manufacturing scale-up, securing the UK’s global leadership in clean energy and advanced manufacturing to 2030 and beyond.

The investment will drive growth, attract inward investment in both gigafactories and the supply chain and create high-quality jobs. It leverages the position of the UK as providing world-leading battery research to optimise battery technologies to make them cheaper, better performing, fully sustainable and recyclable, and to capture sovereign capabilities in next generation batteries, for example solid-state, lithium-sulphur and sodium-ion.

The funding announcement will help accelerate growth in the UK’s battery sector and shows the innovation community the UK Government’s commitment to the sector. The funding sits alongside DRIVE35 (Driving Research & Investment in Vehicle Electrification), an updated and extended range of funding for the automotive sector, which builds on the work of the Automotive Council and the Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC), providing a 10 year commitment to the automotive sector. DRIVE35  is a £2.5 billion programme of capital and R&D funding for the automotive industry, including £500 million to 2035 to extend R&D support for 10 years.

DRIVE35 will fund a wide spectrum of projects which help the transition to zero-emission vehicle manufacturing - targeting established high-volume manufacturing and multi-billion-pound gigafactories, all the way to start-ups, prototypes and cutting-edge automotive innovation.

The programme will provide a more impactful offering for investors across three streamlined pillars: Transformation, Scale Up and Innovation. The government will open the following competitions across the DRIVE35 programme:

  • Automotive Transformation Fund: A new and improved capital funding offer under DRIVE35’s keystone Transformation pillar, supporting large-scale capital investments in the UK, and now with a widened technology scope.
  • Scale Up Feasibility Studies: R&D funding to support businesses with strategic thinking on opportunities to scale, creating a pipeline of exciting decision-ready auto projects for UK investment.
  • Innovation competitions: Through DRIVE35’s Collaborate and Demonstrate streams, we will build on over a decade of success to support both early-stage and late-stage R&D projects involving innovative technologies and processes.

Recent funding for R&D awarded comes to £70m, and combined with industry funding, this totals £140 million in new investment for UK R&D. These projects will support technologies including batteries, energy storage, lightweighting and power electronics. Successful local recipients include Expert Tooling (Coventry), JLR (Coventry and Gaydon), Lorillion (Coventry), Maeving (Coventry), Muon Tech (Leamington), Mint Innovation (Coventry) and Project Four Design (Warwick).

The Battery Cells & Systems event was preceded by a Coventry leg of Battery Britain, an initiative to help build a UK battery supply chain. A Battery Britain Coventry event was held at UKBIC in Baginton where supply chain came together with speakers including Valentina Gentili, the incoming Director of the Battery Innovation Programme at Innovate UK from Innovate UK,  Julian Hetherington, Director of Automotive Transformation at APC and Richard Taylor, CEO of Battery Britain, with the event hosted by EV journalist and social media expert Roger Atkins.

Invest Coventry & Warwickshire exhibited at the Battery Cells & Systems Expo providing an excellent opportunity to engage with the supply chain and promote key local sites like Coventry & Warwick Giga Park / Green Power Park, the West Midlands site for battery cell manufacture, and MIRA Technology Park South Site.

Hercules Academy helps Nuneaton residents to overcome barriers

"By working closely with WSES, Hercules has successfully employed three local Nuneaton residents without incurring any recruitment costs. This success is a testament to the power of thoughtful collaboration and tailored support."

Eight individuals facing barriers to obtaining employment gained invaluable experience from at an independent training provider in Nuneaton.
Hercules Academy, working in partnership with Warwickshire Supported Employment Service (WSES) welcomed the eight jobseekers for a Level 1 Health and Safety course tailored to meet the needs of people who are striving to overcome barriers to the world of work.
The course not only left the octet better-equipped for jobseeking in the future but yielded direct and immediate results. During the training, Paul Blakeman, Head of training at Hercules, met Daniel, a WSES customer whose potential he saw straight away. Inspired by Daniel's dedication and attitude, Paul collaborated with WSES to create a role for him within the team. Daniel joined Hercules Academy as a cleaner, and with the right support, quickly gained confidence, taking pride in his work and becoming a valued member of the workforce.
Daniel’s journey did not end there. His experience with Hercules helped him take his next step onto the job ladder, and he has since accepted a full-time position at the local social enterprise, Nuneaton Signs. Paul and the team are incredibly proud to have played a part in his journey and to witness the power of opportunity and support.
Following Daniel’s progression, Paul made the decision to backfill his role with two more WSES customers in a job share arrangement, further extending his commitment to inclusive employment and giving more local people the chance to thrive within the Hercules team.
Paul Blakeman said: “We pride ourselves on being more than just an Independent Training Provider. Based in Nuneaton, we deliver high-quality training to operatives working on civil engineering projects across the UK but, beyond our technical expertise, we are deeply committed to inclusivity, accessibility and creating a supportive environment for all learners and staff.
"A shining example of this commitment is our partnership with Warwickshire Supported Employment Service. Together, we were delighted to deliver the Level 1 Health and Safety course which all eight participants successfully completed, thanks in part to the implementation of reasonable adjustments such as providing readers and scribes for those who needed additional support.”
Through this partnership, Hercules Academy has demonstrated how inclusive employment practices can benefit everyone involved, creating opportunities for individuals, strengthening the local workforce and fostering a culture of support and growth. A key figure in this process has been Employment Support Advisor, Gail Thompson, who has played a vital role in ensuring both employers and employees are set up for success.
To help mitigate the risks often associated with hiring new staff, Gail organised work trials for WSES customers. These trials allowed individuals to experience the tasks involved and assess whether the work environment was a good fit. This approach not only empowered the candidates but also gave employers confidence in their hiring decisions.
Gail explained: “Employers can be afraid to get it wrong, but we are here to ensure the support is available to both employer and employee. Employers can be at risk when employing someone new if they haven’t ensured the job is a good match. WSES can help reduce that risk.”
WSES manager Charlotte Smith said the partnership brilliantly illustrates the benefits of an enlightened approach to recruitment.
“Hercules are a shining example of how to think about recruitment differently," she said. "They saw the potential of WSES customers from the training and even let them borrow high-visibility jackets to attend an industry tour at Barnardo's, showing their commitment to being a supportive employer in our local community.
"We believe that everyone deserves the chance to thrive, and this has to be a collaboration between person-centred support and employers. Through partnerships like this, we are not only building skills but also building futures. As many as 33% of new hires leave employment within the first 90 days of employment - it makes financial sense for employers to invest in supported employment.
"This ethos has been brought to life through Hercules Academy’s inclusive approach to recruitment. By working closely with WSES, Hercules has successfully employed three local Nuneaton residents without incurring any recruitment costs. This success is a testament to the power of thoughtful collaboration and tailored support."
As Warwickshire prepares to roll out its Connect to Work programme this year, the focus is clear: bridging the gap between untapped talent and local business needs. Connect to Work is a forward-thinking initiative designed to support employers in accessing a broader, more diverse talent pool, particularly individuals who may face barriers to employment. Whether for a small business or large organisation, the programme offers tailored support to help recruit, train, and retain the right people.
If you are an employer in Warwickshire looking to fill vacancies, diversify your workforce, or simply explore new recruitment strategies, we are here to help. Please

Intensive support towards Destination Work

"The programme plays a vital role in helping residents move forward with confidence, providing them with the support they need to prepare for and secure meaningful employment.”

People aged 25 and over who are currently out of employment and looking to build their confidence and employability skills can receive dedicated support from a new programme, Destination Work.

The £500,000 programme will be carried into the county’s communities by three organisations renowned for their expertise and experience in supporting people towards employment.

With guidance from Warwickshire County Council’s Skills Hub, the programme is intended to assist 172 participants in gaining vital employability skills, boosting confidence and ultimately guiding them towards meaningful employment. The programme includes intensive support designed to engage some of the hardest-to-reach people in Warwickshire’s communities. Sessions and activities will cover areas including employability skills, job clubs, communication, confidence and motivation, team working, maths and English tuition and digital skills training as well as other workplace and life skills.

Councillor George Finch, Leader of Warwickshire County Council, said: "One of our key priorities at Warwickshire is to create a skilled workforce and support our residents into employment. We are pleased to continue our partnerships to deliver Destination Work across the county. The programme plays a vital role in helping residents move forward with confidence, providing them with the support they need to prepare for and secure meaningful employment.”

The programme's success will be measured by its ability to engage participants across the four boroughs, helping them achieve a range of employment-related outcomes. These include increasing employability, accessing support services, and successfully securing work.

The service is designed for economically inactive residents - individuals not currently seeking work and not claiming benefits related to active job-seeking, such as Employment Support Allowance (ESA) or Income Support (IS). Participants will receive weekly one-to-one guidance, group activities, and employability training to address both personal and professional barriers to employment.

Samantha Saunders, Regional Operations Manager for AKG, added: "This contract represents a significant step forward in our mission to empower individuals and strengthen communities across Warwickshire. We are thrilled to work alongside Warwickshire Skills Hub and our trusted delivery partners to offer personalised support to economically inactive residents and help them move closer to employment."

* Destination Work is funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and delivered by AKG on behalf of Warwickshire County Council, Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council, Rugby Borough Council, Warwick District Council and Stratford District Council

Uncovering the 'Unscripted' joys of Warwickshire

"Unscripted is a celebration of the real Shakespeare’s England: the people, places, and perspectives that may not always make the brochure."

Setting out to champion spontaneity and authentic exploration, Shakespeare’s England is rolling out its key summer campaign: Unscripted. It’s an open invitation to step away from fixed plans, follow your instincts, and see where the day takes you.

Built around the idea that the most memorable experiences often happen by chance, Unscripted aims to reposition the region as a place where discovery happens naturally. From stumbling across a cosy café to breath taking views you didn’t expect to find, the campaign highlights the kind of moments that don’t always make it onto an itinerary but stay with you long after your visit.

The campaign will unfold across a mix of digital channels and real-world events, including influencer collaborations, a town roadshow engaging with locals, competitions, an in-person Train Station Takeover at London Marylebone (which happened on July 23rd), regional giveaways, and interactive randomised itineraries.

Partners can benefit from increased exposure across both online and offline platforms, with opportunities to be featured in diverse content formats, including reels, stories, blogs, PR, and influencer campaigns.

This campaign offers businesses a valuable platform to showcase authentic, one-of-a-kind experiences while strengthening community ties through shared storytelling and increased visibility.

A campaign toolkit is now available to support industry partners in getting involved. While there are opportunities to be featured on Shakespeare’s England’s platforms, the toolkit also equips you with resources to share your own behind-the-scenes stories, highlight unexpected experiences, or showcase the unique charm that sets your business apart, using your channels to help amplify the Unscripted message far and wide.

Ultimately, Unscripted is a celebration of the real Shakespeare’s England: the people, places, and perspectives that may not always make the brochure.

For further information and to access the campaign toolkit, partners are encouraged to contact Hannah Douglas at hannah.douglas@shakespeares-england.co.uk. As the campaign is now live and running through to the end of summer, we recommend getting in touch as soon as possible to make the most of this opportunity.

Bespoke support and guidance for 16 to 24-year-olds

"The £285,000 programme is designed to help Warwickshire’s hardest-to-reach young people, integrate them into the community and support them towards building fulfilling lives and careers."

Young people in Warwickshire aged 16-24 who aren’t in education, employment or training can access bespoke support and guidance from the Future Destination Hub.

Following successful delivery between October 2024 and March 2025, the Future Destination Hub includes support for 16–24-year-olds who are unemployed.

Individuals who access Future Destination Hub, delivered by Shaw Trust, will work with a dedicated journey guide to identify the barriers they face in the search for education or employment and agree the best pathway forward for the individual, helping them to overcome those barriers. The one-to-one support will remain until the planned destination is achieved.

The £285,000 programme is designed to help Warwickshire’s hardest-to-reach young people, integrate them into the community and support them towards building fulfilling lives and careers.

Recent pilot schemes have shown that personalised support and help to identify individuals’ own needs has created successful results. Between October 2024 and March 2025 132 young people engaged with the service and were supported to develop individual plans, this tailored support led to 76 people being supported to access basic skills, 64 people engaging in job searching, 75 self-reporting increased employability skills and 7 people gaining employment.

Employers and college principles across the county will work with the programme. Colleges will create a series of events to offer young people in Future Destination Hub the opportunity to engage with college activities, taster days and participate in learning opportunities. Employers will offer opportunities which recognise potential barriers and make adjustments to support the young person to retain employment and progress well.

Councillor George Finch, Leader of Warwickshire County Council, said: “Supporting Warwickshire’s young people is a key priority, helping them to build their skills for the future. The Future Destination Hub provides tailored support for each individual, helping them to understand and overcome their barriers into employment or education and build meaningful skills for their future.”

Future Destination Hub is funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and delivered by Shaw Trust on behalf of Warwickshire County Council.

Major conference will advise on exports

A major conference this September will help Warwickshire and West Midlands businesses navigate through the changing global picture and support them in exploring new markets.

The West Midlands International Trade Summit 2025 will be taking place at The Slate at the University of Warwick on Friday, September 12, and is open to firms across the West Midlands and Warwickshire.

The three regional chambers of commerce – Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce, Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce and Black Country Chamber of Commerce – are organising the event alongside the West Midlands Combined Authority, with support from Lloyds for the third year running.

The summit will offer practical tips, information on where to go for advice, and guidance on how to navigate a fast-moving global picture such as US tariffs. It will be an opportunity to meet new and existing contacts within the West Midlands as well as receiving up-to-date information on how to export. The final programme for the day is still being finalised but Liam Byrne MP, the chair of the Business & Trade Select Committee, has already been confirmed as a keynote speaker.

CW Chamber of Commerce Chief Executive, Corin Crane, said the event, which will be free for businesses in the region to attend, had been expanded due to its success over recent years.

He said: “Our international trade summits have provided businesses with so much information and, crucially, inspiration over the past couple of years to help them export. So much so, that we’re growing it this year to include the whole of the West Midlands and it will be great to see firms from all over the region coming to the University of Warwick to benefit from all of the knowledge and experience that will be packed into one room.

“Our teams are working on the full agenda for the day but we can already announce that Liam Byrne MP is going to be one of our keynote speakers, while we’ll also hear from businesses who have been there, seen it and done it and can share insights on their international trade journey.”

David Weatherhead, of Lloyds, said: “In the face of an ever-changing global landscape, it’s crucial that businesses are able to access support and guidance as they look to seize on the opportunities that exist overseas. We’ve seen first-hand how bringing West Midlands organisation together has helped them to break into new markets, innovate and grow. This is why we’ve sponsored this event for the last few years. We look forward to welcoming Liam and the fantastic line up of speakers, and to see new relationships and opportunities that will take shape at this year’s conference.”

Dan Carins, policy manager at the West Midlands Combined Authority, said: “International trade is pivotal to the ambitions of the West Midlands Combined Authority as outlined in the West Midlands Growth Plan. By expanding global reach, local businesses can unlock new markets, drive innovation, and boost productivity, which are essential for achieving inclusive growth and raising living standards across the region.

“This event is a unique opportunity for businesses from the West Midlands to gain the support they need to navigate the complexities of exporting and to contribute to the region's economic transformation. I encourage all businesses to attend and be part of this exciting journey towards a prosperous future.”

Nuneaton community centre benefits from long-term lease

"The centre is a vibrant community hub providing a range of services and support, and this news, together with the recently secured grant from the Council’s Social Fabric Fund means it will continue to go from strength to strength.”

A community centre in Nuneaton will be able to apply for vital grants to maintain and grow its offer to residents after securing a new 25-year lease.

Wembrook Community Centre has signed a new long-term lease on its current premises on Donnithorne Avenue with Warwickshire County Council, through its managing agent Warwickshire Property Management Ltd (WPM).

The centre is at the heart of the local community and was set up in 2012 to support residents in the area – now hosting more than 14 groups and events every week. By sealing a new 25-year lease, the centre will be able to apply for various streams of short and long-term grant funding.

It has already secured a grant from Warwickshire County Council’s Social Fabric Fund, which will be used to improve its facilities, accessibility and open a new garden area to support a gardening club.

Wembrook Community Centre welcomes more than 200 visitors through its doors each week and is a hub for people of all-ages in the local community, from hosting youth clubs, holiday clubs and slimming world, to welcoming elderly residents for friendship clubs, a dementia club and a weekly drop-in session for Citizens Advice.

The centre also operates a community food pantry, in partnership with Feed the Hungry, to support local people in need. It is also hosts a community café on Wednesday and Fridays, which is a Warm Hub, and is run by students from Oak Wood Secondary School as part of a work experience programme to give the students hands-on job experience.

Bill Sheppard, Secretary for Wembrook Community Centre, said: “Our goal is to serve the community and its needs as much as we can. We’re pleased to have secured a new long-term lease on our building. It gives security for residents to know that we will still be here for the next quarter of a century, and it gives us the opportunity to grow by pursuing new grant funding. This will allow us to grow the groups we currently have and improve the facilities we provide, but also to continue to develop what we do and support even more people from the local area.”

WPM is part of Warwickshire Property & Development Group (WPDG), which manages the Warwickshire County Council leased portfolio.

Paul Blennerhassett, Senior Asset Manager at WPM, said: “Wembrook Community Centre is at the heart of its community and provides an invaluable service for residents. We’re proud to have supported the renewal of the lease, which will enable the centre to continue its brilliant work for people in Nuneaton for many years to come.”

Cllr Stephen Shaw, Warwickshire County Council Portfolio Holder for Finance and Property said: “Securing this long-term lease supports the centre to continue its brilliant work, providing stability and security for the future. The centre is a vibrant community hub providing a range of services and support, and this news, together with the recently secured grant from the Council’s Social Fabric Fund means it will continue to go from strength to strength.”

The future of Parade

“Businesspeople recognise that all town and city centres have challenges coming at them from all angles - from internet shopping through to high business rates - so it’s vitally important that they move with the times."

Businesspeople in Warwickshire have been briefed about new concept plans to transform Leamington’s Parade - and are encouraged to have their say.

Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce’s Mid-Warwickshire Local Business Forum welcomed Stephen Marks, representing the Leamington Transformation Board, to its latest meeting at Ashorne Hill.

Stephen presented the concept plans to make Parade a traffic-free space to give the town centre a major economic and cultural boost. The Leamington Transformation Board, made up of representatives from Warwickshire County Council, Warwick District Council, and Royal Leamington Spa Town Council, opened an eight-week engagement exercise on its emerging Parade Masterplan at the start of June, and will run until July 28.

Part of the masterplan includes exploring options to remove vehicular traffic from Parade, with the aim of increasing the number of people using the space and the time they spend there, boosting the town’s economy. Buses that currently stop at the top of Parade would be re-routed to alternative stops nearby, while delivery vehicles would be permitted limited access during times of lower footfall. Emergency vehicles would still be able to access the road.

Businesses also heard that a new town square next to the Town Hall would be created, providing a new space for community events, markets, and performances. Parade would be enhanced by the addition of new trees, planting, seating and cycle infrastructure, with accessibility at the forefront of its design.

The meeting was chaired by Kate Hunter, the vice-chair of the Chamber’s Mid-Warwickshire Local Business Forum who said firms were broadly in favour of the changes but had welcomed the opportunity to ask questions.

Kate said: “Businesspeople recognise that all town and city centres have challenges coming at them from all angles - from internet shopping through to high business rates - so it’s vitally important that they move with the times. Those businesses in attendance, in the main, liked the concept and the opportunity to create new spaces that would open the town centre. Leamington has so much going for it already, so it’s crucial that any new plans build on its strengths and help to make it fit for the future.

“We’d encourage members to respond directly to the consultation so that it gives the Leamington Transformation Board a really strong picture of what businesses and the wider public think of the plans.”

The meeting was also updated on the Chamber’s plans for a manifesto to be launched later this year, with firms asked to give their views on the key priorities for the region.

Kate said: “It was a packed meeting and it was great to get an update on the manifesto because it will give the Chamber an opportunity to proactively campaign on the issues that really matter to companies across the region.”

Anyone wishing to respond to the survey on the plans for Parade should visit www.warwickshire.gov.uk/ask

Refurb will improve student experience

Work is underway to refurbish three accommodation blocks at the University of Warwick, in a further boost to the student experience on campus.

Morgan Sindall Construction has been appointed to renovate the Claycroft Residences, one of the largest banks of accommodation on the University’s main campus in Coventry.

The 17,000m² development comprises three individual accommodation blocks, providing 679 bedrooms arranged into eight-person flats. The scheme will look to breathe new life into the halls, built between 1994 and 1997, providing students with modern, high-quality living facilities.

Internally, all bathrooms will be extensively redecorated with complete new flooring, sanitaryware and decoration and all bedrooms will be modernised with a painted feature wall. Communal areas will benefit from new vinyl tile flooring and new metal suspended ceilings to enhance aesthetics and durability. The laundrette in Claycroft 1 will be remodelled to include an accessible dryer, with the layout extended into the adjacent staff office to create additional usable space.

The scope of works, which took 14 months to design and plan, includes replacement of the existing roof coverings along with a general upgrade of the buildings to continue to comply with safety standards. This will involve a full rewire and the renewal of all fire safety systems.

To reduce disruption and maintain a safe living and learning environment, Morgan Sindall has worked closely with the University of Warwick to align the works with the academic calendar. Construction will be delivered in three phases - with one block being redeveloped at a time - from July 2025 to September 2026. This approach will enable two buildings to remain in use at all times, allowing students to safely relocate between blocks during the academic year.

Renovation of the first building, housing 266 bedrooms, is due for completion in November, in what will represent another celebration for the University in its 60th anniversary year.

The project was procured via SCAPE Venture – a construction framework specifically designed for privately funded projects. A key benefit of this procurement route was the ability to gain early, invaluable input from a tier one contractor on buildability, cost planning, programme alignment, and logistics during the preconstruction phase.

By working collaboratively from the outset, all stakeholders were able to successfully create a delivery programme that not only aligned with the University’s objectives, but also allowed the project to progress smoothly through pre-construction and commence on site within the planned schedule.

Sioned Cash, Interim Director of Accommodation for the University of Warwick, said: “I’m very pleased that work has started on this exciting redevelopment project. This investment demonstrates the University of Warwick’s continued commitment to enhancing the student experience through high-quality accommodation.

“We’re delighted to be working in partnership with Morgan Sindall to deliver modern, comfortable living spaces that meet the evolving needs of our students.”

Businesses gather at Minerva Mill

Business owners, start-ups, and entrepreneurs from across Warwickshire gathered at Minerva Mill Innovation Centre for the Boost Your Business This Summer event – a free business advice and support session designed to help local enterprises refocus, recharge, and grow with confidence.

Organised by Vicky Griffith from the Rural Enterprise Hub, the event brought together a range of support agencies, all committed to empowering rural businesses with insights into the wide and varied support available – from practical advice and tailored guidance to access to fully funded resources.

Attendees were warmly welcomed by Vicky before hearing from key partners, including Kerry Smith (Coventry & Warwickshire Growth Hub), Heather Docksey (Warwickshire Skills Hub) and Saffron Medway (Coventry & Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce).

Each representative shared valuable information on the free support, training, and funding opportunities available across the region. The session also included relaxed 1:1 discussions, allowing businesses to explore their individual needs, ask questions, and gain guidance tailored to their journey.

The event was well received by attendees, who praised its relevance, accessibility, and welcoming atmosphere. One business owner said: “The event was useful and informative. We got a lot out of the different presentations as we were not aware of that information previously. They gave us some insights about the actions to take now and in the future regarding business support and who to contact. It was a great networking opportunity, and some discussions and communications have started with different participants.”

Vicky Griffith, Rural Enterprise Hub Coordinator, added: “It was great to welcome so many members of the local business community. Events like this highlight the support that’s available across Warwickshire, whether you’re just starting out or looking to grow. Thank you to Kerry, Heather, and Saffron for sharing their time and expertise.”

For those who missed the event or would like to learn more about the free support available, the Rural Enterprise Hub team welcomes enquiries: 📧 Email: vicky@minervamill.co.uk, phone: 01789 761334, or pop into Minerva Mill Innovation Centre for a chat.

The perfect place to build an automotive tech business

"The support we’ve received from Robert, Ian and the County Council has been invaluable...their guidance and introductions have made a real difference.”

The founder of a groundbreaking simulation software company in Leamington Spa has praised Coventry & Warwickshire as “the perfect place” to study and build a business in the automotive sector.

With a rich mix of large technology firms such as Codemasters, IBM and Jaguar Land Rover, alongside innovative SMEs, the region has long been a magnet for talent. Many graduates have gone on to launch successful ventures of their own.

Raoul Popescu-Ghimis, who graduated from Coventry University, worked for several local firms before founding RACE (Rapid Axle Concept Evolution) Software in 2020. The software business, which supports the development of vehicle suspension systems via proprietary cloud-based simulations, now employs 11 people and continues to grow from its base in Leamington.

“Coventry University played a key role in helping me get started in my career,” said Raoul. “The course gave me the right foundation, and the support from my lecturers after graduation helped me secure my first job in the industry. Now, Warwick Business School is supporting their students in a similar way — and I’m proud that some of them have come to RACE.”

RACE offers placements to students from Warwick Business School, giving them real-world experience while bringing fresh energy and ideas into the business.

“We receive quick and valuable support from the Warwick Business School team,” he added. “The students are focused on business development, which aligns with our current expansion needs.”

As RACE has grown, the company has been supported by Warwickshire County Council through both the Automotive Specialist Ian Flynn and Business Growth Advisor Robert Dyer. Ian connected Raoul with contacts from the Department for Business & Trade and helped with export opportunities and international delegations. In 2023, a meeting at the Mill Street Exchange led to an introduction to Robert, who guided RACE through the Innovate UK Immersive & Creative Industries Launchpad grant — which RACE successfully secured.

The County Council has continued to support the company with introductions and networking opportunities. Raoul was also introduced to the Business Ready Programme, delivered by the University of Warwick Science Park, which helps high-growth SMEs scale further.

RACE also achieved a major milestone at Venturefest, winning the competition through a pitch delivered by Raoul that secured mentoring and support from local venture capital group Minerva.

RACE Software is a fully cloud-based simulation platform for developing suspension systems. It requires no installation and runs directly in any web browser. Its clients span the spectrum, from motorsport teams and innovative EV startups to OEMs, Tier 1 and Tier 2 supplier and universities.

“We’ve helped bring vehicles into production around the world — from small manufacturers to OEMs and motorsport teams looking to improve performance,” said Raoul. “Our customer base is global, but it all started here in Coventry & Warwickshire. The support we’ve received from Robert, Ian, and the County Council has been invaluable. Their guidance and introductions have made a real difference.”

“We are proud to be making a global impact while contributing to the region’s economy and innovation ecosystem.”

Talk Up Our Towns

450 years on, Dudley's legacy still resonates in Kenilworth

“The 450th anniversary of one of the most speculated-about visits in English royal history is something very much to be celebrated and the residents of the town have really bought into the events."

When Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, hosted Queen Elizabeth I at Kenilworth Castle in 1575, he - and she - had no idea that the town’s economy would still be benefiting from the royal visit 450 years later.

On July 12, 1575, after a day devoted to music and dancing at the castle, Her Majesty walked through Leycester’s Gatehouse at dusk and stood awhile to listen to musicians playing their lutes on a barge anchored on the Great Mere.

On July 12, 2025, more than 750 Kenilworth residents, greeted by the Town Mayor, gathered in the castle grounds for a community picnic and evening of family entertainment, including performers portraying Dudley’s courting of Her Majesty four and a half centuries earlier.

Kenilworth is a town with a stunning history appreciated by a current population with a passion for translating that history into pleasure for residents and visitors alike. The anniversary of the royal visit, which took place from July 9th to 27th, 1575, has been marked by a series of events which has attracted people to the town – and shown them it’s worth coming back.

The special picnic, where visitors were entertained by theatre group A Book of Portraits who staged their own show inspired by Dudley’s efforts to impress his Queen, was blessed by excellent weather and was a memorable evening. It dovetailed perfectly with the centrepiece of the anniversary celebrations – a new immersive art installation at the castle by Lindsey Mendick. Entitled “Wicked Game” the thought-provoking installation offers a new perspective on the relationship between Dudley and the Queen.

The artwork, installed in one of England’s most beautiful and evocative castles, has charmed and intrigued historians since its unveiling on July 9th. It will be there until October 31st and every visitor attracted is a potential customer for Kenilworth’s many alluring shops, cafes, restaurants and pubs.

“The installation is quite magical,” said Kenilworth Town Clerk. Maggie Field. “The 450th anniversary of one of the most speculated-about visits in English royal history is something very much to be celebrated and the residents of the town have really bought into the events. The picnic, on a lovely, sunny evening, was fantastic with hundreds of the town’s residents picnicking in the ground of the castle that they all jointly own.”

Every Kenilworth resident has a stake in the castle which is run by English Heritage but the freehold owned by Kenilworth Town Council - perhaps the only local authority in England to own a castle! The residents’ pride in their town helps make its history work for local businesses through the visitor economy. Local retailers, Castle Home Luxuries commissioned designs by local artist Di Shores to commemorate the anniversary and have cards and jigsaw puzzles available on sale.

This summer’s celebrations have embraced every generation from primary school children, all of whom have a special 450th anniversary pencil to savour, to members who heard a fascinating talk by Gillian White at a meeting of Kenilworth History & Archaeology Society at the Senior Citizens Centre in Abbey End. Many of the events, including the Coventry Cathedral Choral Concert in St Johns Church were incredibly popular and received fantastic feedback from attendees. There are more events still to come with Queen E Rocks, a fringe night of history and hilarity on 27th July, 7.30pm at Talisman Theatre.

“Queen Elizabeth I’s visit to Kenilworth is one of the most significant events in the long history of our town,” said James Kennedy, Mayor of Kenilworth. “The 450th anniversary of her visit is a great opportunity for residents and visitors to commemorate the event – and also further investigate the wonderful visitor offer of our lovely town.”

Sustainable Warwickshire

Energy advice and support service renewed

Last year’s grants will result in total energy savings of 1,789,000 KWhs and help 34 businesses save £222,428 on their energy bills in just the first 12 months.

Warwickshire Businesses will continue to receive access to energy audits and grants to help them become more energy efficient as the Business Energy Advice Service (BEAS) continues for another year.

Following the success of the previous financial year where 192 audits were carried out and 34 BEAS grants worth over £740,000 were paid to support energy efficiencies within businesses, the programme will continue for 2025/26.

As a branch of the £3.3 million Business Growth Warwickshire Programme, BEAS has been designed to help businesses across Warwickshire reduce energy costs and drive growth through free energy assessments and 50% match funded grants. On completion of an energy audit, small to medium sized businesses may have the opportunity to apply for a capital grant of up to £100,000 to support them with implementing their energy efficiency recommendations.

In addition to accessing support to implement energy improvements, businesses can now use the funding to apply for up to £50,000 match funding towards the installation of solar panels.

Councillor George Finch, Leader of Warwickshire County Council, said: “The BEAS audits and grants support businesses to implement energy efficient solutions helping them to reduce their energy consumption and to also lower their bills. Last year’s grants will result in total energy savings of 1,789,000 KWhs and help 34 businesses save £222,428 on their energy bills in just the first 12 months. The audits also identified a further £14 million of potential cost savings across the 192 businesses supported.

“Any businesses looking to make efficiencies and save money I encourage you to get in touch as soon as possible and find out how the programme can support you.”

The Business Energy Advice Service (BEAS) is a pilot scheme led by the Mayor of the West Midlands, the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) and the Department for Energy Security & Net Zero (DESNZ).

The scheme provides businesses across the West Midlands with free energy audits and match funding to cut their energy usage and bills. Warwickshire County Council is the lead delivery partner for the Warwickshire area. Coventry City Council have been appointed to deliver the energy audits on behalf of the County Council. The UK Shared Prosperity Fund is also supporting additional business support activities as part of Business Growth Warwickshire.
